While it should not come as a surprise following news that a grand jury subpoena - which listed the Justice Department’s criminal division listed as a contact - had been sent to Boeing and the FAA, scrutinizing the development of Boeing 737 MAX jetliners and in particular whether corners had been cut with its anti-stall (MCAS) system, moments ago Boeing stuck tumbled when the Seattle Times reported that the FBI has joined the criminal investigation into the certification of the Boeing 737 MAX, "lending its considerable resources to an inquiry already being conducted by U.S. Department of Transportation agents." The federal grand jury investigation, based in Washington, D.C., is looking into the certification process that approved the safety of the new Boeing plane, two of which have crashed since October, the Seattle Times reported. Conveniently, the FBI’s Seattle field office is located close to Boeing’s 737 manufacturing plant in Renton, as well as nearby offices of Boeing and Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) officials involved in the certification of the plane, which means that the probe should be rather quick. The investigation, which is being overseen by the U.S. Justice Department’s criminal division and carried out by the Transportation Department’s Inspector General, began in response to information obtained after a Lion Air 737 MAX 8 crashed shortly after takeoff from Jakarta on Oct. 29, killing 189 people, Bloomberg reported earlier this week, citing an unnamed source. It has widened since then, with the grand jury issuing a subpoena on March 11 for information from someone involved in the plane’s development, one day after the crash of an Ethiopian Airlines 737 MAX 8 near Addis Ababa that killed 157 people, The Associated Press reported this week. A story by the Seattle Times over the weekend detailed how FAA managers pushed its engineers to delegate more of the certification process to Boeing itself, sparking confusion just what the FAA's role actually is, and whether it delegated its own duties to the "supervised" company in exchange for kickbacks. The Times story also detailed flaws in an original safety analysis that Boeing delivered to the FAA. Reports by London’s Guardian, Press TV, and other media suggesting it are unverified, the Guardian saying the following: Mohammad bin Salman (MBS) “has not attended a series of high-profile ministerial and diplomatic meetings in Saudi Arabia over the last fortnight and is alleged to have been stripped of some of his financial and economic authority,” adding: “The move to restrict, if only temporarily…understood to have been revealed to a group of senior ministers earlier last week by his father, King Salman.” Press TV reported that MBS was “stripped of some of his powers and has not attended…recent weekly cabinet meetings and…high-profile talks with visiting dignitaries,” including Sergey Lavrov, confirmed by Russia’s Foreign Ministry, adding: King Salman appointed Musaed al-Aiban to oversee kingdom financial and investment decision-making. On July 14, 2018, months before Jamal Khashoggi’s October 2 murder by an MBS hit squad in the kingdom’s Istanbul consulate, Middle East Eye reported the following: “Twenty-four Saudi princes, including Deputy Crown Prince Muqrin Bin Abdulaziz, (met) with king Salman…in Mecca…in the absence of” MBS. Separately, king Salman met with presidents and other officials of various nations in July last year. It’s unclear if MBS attended the meeting. His absence from various high-level meetings may or may not be significant, no information from the kingdom either way. He’s king Salman’s favorite son. There’s been no official word on whether he fell out of favor with his father over Khashoggi’s murder causing international furor and/or other activities he overseas.

Canada announced Tuesday it will boost spending on border security in an effort to clamp down on asylum-seekers crossing into its country from the U.S. What are the details? The Canadian government is committing an additional $902 million over the next five years in an attempt to stem the flow of asylum-seekers from nations like Nigeria and Central American countries who are swarming its border from the U.S. According to Reuters, 57,000 "irregular migrants" poured into Canada last year, overwhelming the country's court system and burdening its welfare programs. Finance Minister Bill Morneau said the purpose of the enhanced border enforcement was "to detect and intercept individuals who cross Canadian borders irregularly and who try to exploit Canada's immigration system." The new initiative is being driven, at least in part, by voters frustrated that elected officials haven't done more to deter migrants from planting roots in the country, Reuters reported. On Monday night at precisely 9:38 PM, a massive explosion at Mt. Popocatepetl sent a column of volcanic ash nearly a mile into the sky. A “yellow alert warning” has been issued by the authorities, and they are ordering everyone to stay at least 12 kilometers away from the crater. They are stressing that the threat has not passed, and as you will see below, an evacuation plan is in place in case an even larger eruption follows. And if a much larger eruption does follow, the devastation could be off the charts. Mexico City is only 43 miles away from Mt. Popocatepetl, and approximately 25 million people live within a 60 mile radius of the crater. The explosion on Monday night was definitely a wake up call. According to media reports, it was “loud enough to shake doors and windows of houses in the city of Puebla”… Mexico’s Popocatepetl volcano erupted late on Monday, hurling incandescent rock about 1.5 miles down its slopes and sending ash into the night sky near the nation’s capital. The explosion, one of the volcano’s largest eruptions in years, was heard from nearby communities and was loud enough to shake doors and windows of houses in the city of Puebla, according to local media. Mt. Popocatepetl has been increasingly active in recent months, and authorities are concerned that all of this activity could be leading up to something really big. In fact, it is being reported that they are “currently preparing for the worst case scenarios”… So what would a “worst case scenario” for Mt. Popocatepetl look like? Well, scientists tell us that the volcano is capable of producing a “catastrophic Plinian eruption”…

The Czech president’s remarks come a few days after Turkey announced a joint operation with Iran against the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK), which Ankara considers a terrorist organization. During a trip to the Karlovy Vary region on Tuesday, Czech President Milos Zeman claimed he considered Turkey a “de facto ally” of ISIS, the CTK news agency reported. “Why attack the Kurds? Because they are de facto allies of the Islamic State”, the president said, answering a question from one of the meeting’s participants. “This means that it’s Turkey – despite the fact that it is a NATO member and seeks to join the European Union, which it is unlikely to be accepted – that has served as a mediator in logistics operations for the Islamic State supplies when occupied a significant part of Syria and Iraq. This, for example, included oil exports and the like.” The Czech president has accused his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan of pursuing a policy of Islamising his country. “This is no longer the secular state of Ataturk, but a state that professes Islamic ideology, and as follows logically, that it stands close to the Islamic radicals”, Zeman alleged. A Chicago police union is asking the Justice Department to investigate Cook County Prosecutor Kim Foxx for potentially seeking to spike the investigation into Jussie Smollett’s hate hoax. The Chicago-area Fraternal Order of Police are questioning whether Foxx sought to have the investigation stunted by requesting that the local authorities hand the case over the FBI. Foxx, the elected State’s Attorney for Cook County, then recused herself from the case in the thick of the investigation in February, citing “familiarity” with individuals involved in the incident. Seeking to place an investigation into the hate hoax in the hands of the FBI could have been an effective plan to hush up the incident. The federal agency has been hit hard by accusations of institutional leftist bias, and it’s possible elements within the Bureau could consigned a criminal case against Smollett- who now faces felony disorderly conduct charges related to lying to the police- to the dustbin. An aide to former First Lady Michele Obama reached out to Foxx about the case during the investigation, expressing a preference for the FBI to marshal the investigation. Text messages revealed that Foxx responded affirmatively, going on to request that the Chicago Police Department hand the case off as a potential hate crime.

In a rare endorsement, U.S. Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) has announced his support for Jeff Moore in North Carolina’s special election for the 3rd Congressional District. “We need a new generation of conservative leaders who will fight to defend the principles that made our country great. Jeff Moore is the clear choice for conservatives who want to help President Trump drain the swamp,” said Senator Paul. Despite taking heat for not supporting President Donald J. Trump’s national emergency to build the wall, Paul is perhaps Trump’s closest ally in the Senate. The pair have worked together extremely well during Trump’s first term. Moore is a strong Constitutional conservative and supporter of Trump’s agenda, particularly in the arena of border security and free market capitalism. His website describes him as a “geopolitical risk consultant, writer, editor, and a champion of the principles of liberty, limited government, and the American idea.” Moore is the editor-in-chief of First in Freedom Daily, a North Carolina political news website. “I am honored and humbled to earn the support and endorsement of Sen. Rand Paul as we work to advance the cause of liberty,” Moore told Big League Politics by email. “I’m proud to stand with Rand, and all champions of the American idea, at a time when the Constitution and our core principles are under unprecedented attacks from the Left. We must all come to the defense of President Donald Trump in his efforts to Make America Great Again, and go on offense to reclaim America as founded. I’m ready to join Rand in that fight, and emboldened knowing that he stands with me.” Moore is battling several Republicans in a heavily red district to fill the seat formerly held by the late Walter Johnson.

Nursultan Nazarbayev, the President of Kazakhstan of 30 years and the last Soviet-era leader in power in a former Soviet republic, unexpectedly resigned on Tuesday, but is widely expected to retain power over the country’s politics and policies. Nazarbayev, viewed as an autocrat as many of the other rulers of Central Asian nations, noted in his resignation speech that during his three-decade tenure since 1989 Kazakhstan managed to attract foreign investment in its commodities industries and set up a sovereign wealth fund thanks to oil and gas revenues. Kazakhstan has tripled its oil production over the past 30 years and is currently taking part in the OPEC/non-OPEC deal to reduce output. Kazakhstan’s production cap under the agreement is 1.86 million bpd, down by 40,000 bpd from its November production level. “I have made a difficult decision for myself - to resign from the powers of the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan,” Nazarbayev said in an address on Tuesday, but noted that he would remain the Chairman of the Security Council, “which is vested with serious powers.” “That is to say, I am staying with you,” said Nazarbayev in what analysts see as a prepared political transition that would still give the now former president considerable power over Kazakhstan. Nazarbayev, who was the only president of independent Kazakhstan until yesterday, handed over the presidential power to the Chairman of the Senate, Kassym-Jomart Kemelovich Tokayev, until the end of the presidential term in office, April 2020. Kazakhstan is slated to hold presidential and general elections next year. More at: https://oilprice.com/Latest-Energy-News/World-News/The-President-Of-Oil-Rich-Kazakhstan-Of-30-Years-Resigns.html

Oil data provider TankerTrackers.com first reported last year that Iranian tankers were turning off their transponders to hide the destination of their journeys. At the time, most tanker tracking data came precisely from transponders and port authorities, which made most Iranian tanker movement reports unreliable. This, in turn, contributed to the October-December oil price drop when it emerged that Iran was shipping more crude abroad than previously believed. No wonder, then, that the United States is now targeting vessels transporting Iranian crude oil in violation of sanctions, a senior State Department official told VOA this week. "We are closely tracking ship-to-ship transfers of oil to evade our oil sanctions," said Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Counter Threat Finance and Sanctions David Peyman. "And we're working closely with foreign governments to ensure they are monitoring ship-to-ship transfers off their coasts." Peyman also said everyone involved in the transport and ship-to-ship transfer of Iranian oil in defiance of sanctions will be held accountable by Washington. "If you are engaged in evasive action, which is really the worst kind of violation when it comes to U.S. sanctions, we will hold you accountable," the official said. In fact, oil and fuel traders are resorting to measures that they already used during the previous term of Iranian sanctions when those were enforced by not just one country but the United Nations. Reuters reports, quoting industry sources from Asia, that since the sanction waivers do not extend to oil products, even countries granted waivers may be buying products such as fuel oil from Iran. “Some buyers...will want Iranian oil regardless of U.S. strategic objectives to deny Tehran oil revenue, and Iran will find a way to keep some volumes flowing,” the agency quoted Economist Intelligence Unit analyst Peter Kiernan as saying. VOA quoted TankerTrackers co-founder Samir Madani as saying the service had detected two such transfers in February alone, with one taking as long as three months to complete and the other a month. In both cases, Madani told VOA, the transferred fuel was then moved to a third vessel that shipped it to a port.

Japanese refiners are unlikely to continue buying Iranian crude from April onwards, the president of the Petroleum Association of Japan said as quoted by Reuters. However, Takashi Tsukuoka added they would continue importing Iranian crude if Tokyo agreed on a sanction waiver extension, which it was currently negotiating with Washington. This makes Japan the second country to try and negotiate a waiver extension, after India entered identical talks earlier this month. Washington has signaled it would probably agree to some form of an extension as long as the importing countries agree to reduce their intake of Iranian crude. Japan has been very strict in following Washington’s lead in the sanction department, but it has also indicated that finding an alternative to Iranian crude might be tough. “Japan has told the U.S. that the sanctions should not negatively affect Japan’s stable supply of energy and Japanese companies’ operations,” one government official in Tokyo said, commenting on the waiver negotiations to Reuters.
