A federal judge Monday ordered the unsealing and release of correspondences from attorneys for celebrity lawyer Alan Dershowitz and Victoria’s Secret founder Leslie Wexner in a defamation case that is likely to reveal more about the secretive life of disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein. U.S. District Judge Loretta Preska ruled Monday that there was no cause to conceal the legal requests and responses and set an Aug. 17 date for a hearing on whether the retail magnate Wexner can be forced to testify in a defamation case involving one of Epstein’s victims, Virginia Roberts Giuffre. Preska wrote that she saw “no reason for that correspondence to remain under seal,” and told the parties to file their respective letters on the public docket, which happened Monday afternoon. The documents show that Dershowitz alleges that Giuffre — who is suing him for defamation — is trying to extort money from him because of his relationship as a longtime friend to and lawyer for Epstein. And Dershowitz wants Wexner and his attorney John Zeiger to testify that they had privately settled a similar claim threatened by Giuffre. Dershowitz, who is countersuing Giuffre, was not only friends with Epstein, but as his lawyer was instrumental in negotiating a nonprosecution agreement more than a decade ago that absolved Epstein, his close associates and unnamed others of potential federal charges of sex trafficking. In a June 23 letter to the judge, attorneys for Dershowitz noted they had served subpoenas in June on Wexner and Zeiger, and asked Preska to compel them to provide for “the production of a small number of documents directly relevant to the central allegation in this case that Plaintiff falsely accused Professor Dershowitz of sexual abuse as part of a scheme to extort Wexner.”

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) expects to finalize and sign this week new rules about methane emissions for the oil and gas sector, including putting an end to requirements that companies have systems in place to detect methane leaks, senior administration officials told The Wall Street Journal. The EPA has proposed updating the Obama administration’s rules on methane emissions and detection. Last year in August, the EPA proposed updates to the air regulations for the oil and gas industry in order to “remove regulatory duplication and save the industry millions of dollars in compliance costs each year – while maintaining health and environmental regulations on oil and gas sources that the agency considers appropriate.” The EPA’s regulatory impact analysis has estimated that the proposed amendments would save the oil and gas industry $17-$19 million a year, for a total of $97-$123 million from 2019 through 2025, the agency said in August last year. According to The Journal’s sources, the new methane rules – rescinding the 2016 regulations of the Obama administration – would apply to oil and gas wells drilled after 2016. The new rules would also exempt major pipelines and storage sites from EPA oversight of greenhouse gas emissions.

Not like this would be, nobody is going to dare let it be undeferred and the longer Trump extends the deferral the more sure that is. Trump has also specified that he has instructed the Treasury to come up with options legislative or otherwise to cancel it permanently.

Exactly, which is why it needs to be phased out in an orderly fashion. Shifting it to be funded by the genera fund and getting rid of the tax is the first step towards doing that.

Once officials from the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health finished “investigating” Grace Church of Sun Valley, California, for holding in-person services in defiance of the state’s mandates limiting such services, they sent a “cease and desist” order to senior pastor John MacArthur. If he continues such defiance, and holds services in the future, he faces a daily fine of $1,000 or arrest. He continues to hold such services, and a top-drawer coterie of high-powered attorneys are gathering around the church and its pastor to offer free legal assistance. Such assistance is likely to be needed, and soon. One of the atorneys is constitutional lawyer Jenna Ellis, a senior fellow at the Falkirk Center for Faith & Liberty who provides legal counsel at the Alliance Defending Freedom. She is also the senior legal counsel to the Trump 2020 presidential campaign, has served on the president’s legal team during his impeachment trial, and is Trump’s personal counsel. She can see what’s coming: a battle royal over the constitution. Ellis remarked: Pastor MacArthur and Grace Community church are not disobeying the Constitution; it is California’s Governor Gavin Newsom and Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti are defying their constitutional obligation to protect religious freedom and church assembly.

The Marine Corps will overhaul its mission in Norway this fall, swapping its yearlong presence for shorter stints in the Scandinavian country that will put as many as 1,000 troops there at once. Hundreds of Marines have been deploying to Norway every six months for nearly four years. Starting in October, though, the rotations will be switched to what the Marine Corps is calling an "episodic deployment model" that will align with major Norwegian military training events. Afghanistan agreed on Sunday to release 400 “hard-core” Taliban prisoners, paving the way for the beginning of peace talks aimed at ending more than 19 years of war. Under election-year pressure from U.S. President Donald Trump for a deal allowing him to bring home American troops, the war-torn country’s grand assembly, or Loya Jirga, on Sunday approved the release, a controversial condition raised by the Taliban militants to join peace talks. “In order to remove an obstacle, allow the start of the peace process and an end of bloodshed, the Loya Jirga approves the release of 400 Taliban,” the assembly said in a resolution. Minutes later, Afghan President Ashraf Ghani said, “Today, I will sign the release order of these 400 prisoners.” Last week Ghani invited some 3,200 Afghan community leaders and politicians to Kabul amid tight security and concerns about the COVID-19 pandemic to advise the government on whether the prisoners should be freed.

The United States plans to cut its troop levels in Afghanistan to “a number less than 5,000” by the end of November, Defense Secretary Mark Esper said in an interview broadcast on Saturday, adding detail to drawdown plans U.S. President Donald Trump announced earlier this week. The United States currently has about 8,600 troops in Afghanistan. Trump said in an interview released Monday by Axios that the United States planned to lower that number to about 4,000. Esper announced the lower troop levels in a Fox News interview. https://www.reuters.com/article/us-usa-afghanistan-military/esper-u-s-will-cut-troop-levels-in-afghanistan-to-less-than-5000-idUSKCN255031
