Yes, my thoughts as well, AF. But it seems that the article is intended to reach the "left" camp, and the first thought to my mind was it isn't left versus right, but liberty versus tyranny - we need everybody on board to fight this thing back. I posted a Tom Woods video on Agorsim, I hope you have had time to check it out and maybe share it - looking for ways to Starve the State.

August 6, 2020 There is growing concern that government surveillance in the United States is headed in a dangerous direction. Accelerated by publicity from the government’s heavy-handed response to the Black Lives Matter (BLM) protests, media outlets have reported on extensive aerial surveillance carried out by law enforcement agencies, increased police reliance on artificial intelligence (AI)-powered social media surveillance, and the use of facial recognition technology to detect individuals involved in suspected crimes. Some commentators even suggest that the surveillance techniques deployed in the United States are starting to resemble tactics used in far more repressive countries, such as China or Russia. David Carroll, for example, writes in Quartz that the main difference between U.S. and Chinese surveillance programs is that the Chinese are honest about the dystopian elements of their strategy, whereas the United States does a better job of “camouflaging it” and pretending that its surveillance programs still uphold civil liberties. Similarly, Derek Thompson compares two “surveillance states” in The Atlantic: Xinjiang, China and Brooklyn, New York. While he clarifies that nothing in the United States quite compares to the surveillance apparatus implemented by Chinese authorities, “the use of novel surveillance tools to monitor, terrify, and even oppress minority citizens is not a foreign concept.” Such comparisons can be highly misleading. Technological capacity alone is not determinative of whether a country will use surveillance repressively. As a democracy, the United States has many more rights protections in place than does China and fundamentally greater accountability between citizens and leaders. Nevertheless, as America’s history of past surveillance abuses indicates – such as the FBI and National Security Agency’s (NSA) actions in the 1960s and 1970s to spy on civil rights leaders like Martin Luther King, Jr – even well-established democracies struggle to maintain an appropriate balance between law enforcement imperatives, on the one hand, and citizens’ rights on the other. The rapid advent of powerful new digital technologies that enable greater mass surveillance raises the question of whether the United States will be able to maintain such a balance in the years ahead. Several troubling trends make that question especially pertinent now.

Your absolute faith in the federal government to do something that is at least temporarily beneficial for regular people is touching. Utterly foolish and hopelessly, dangerously naive, but touching nonetheless.

Blah blah. What are you talking about Alinsky LARPer? A tax deferral is not a tax cut. If Trump (his communist CFR handlers, actually) was actually doing what you claim, the EO would direct the Treasury to disregard Title 26, not direct them to FOLLOW it.

August 8, 2020 By Chaz Donovan For the last several months, the populace of the United States of America has been beaten and bamboozled. Bewildered, if not outright crushed, people are berating each other for failing to wear a face mask in public. Riots have taken over several big cities in the country, and crime is exploding in New York City, Chicago, Minneapolis, Atlanta, and others. The country is walking on eggshells. Every new minute threatens to bring forth renewed hysteria, anger, and dysphoria. The tension and anger of the population at large are palpable. What happened here? It all started with Operation COVID. This writer thought that the lockdowns were unsustainable and that they would end quickly due to a furious response of the public. Surely, Americans would not put up with such nonsense. This is the purported “Land of the Free” after all. That they have accepted lockdowns shows this writer committed what should have been the obvious mortal sin of overestimating Boobus’ ability to think critically (or think at all). Not only have most Americans put up with it, they have begged for their chains. They have cheered the State in its effort to crush business owners, mandate masks, demand antisocial distancing (including on private property), and more. In some states, the lockdowns have not even ended. It should go without saying that the government has no authority to close business, nor force masks on people. With Boobus, this does not go without saying.

The catch is that it is then up to the Governors to decide if they want to use the money received (whenever they actually receive it, no one seems to think about that part) to pay the additional unemployment payments or if they'd rather use it for something else, like bailing out their pension funds. This looks sort of like it could be a stealth bailout of the state budgets like Chuck and Nancy wanted, but on a smaller scale. Sure, if holding people hostage for their vote over a completely fake emergency is cool with you.

Exactly. A "deferral" or "deferment" means to put the payment off untill a later date, NOT cut or forgive the payment entirely. So what happens at the end of the year then? Those granted "deferrals" have to make a lump sum payment? Big favor. Go Trump.

With "Republicans" like Donald, who needs Democrats? You Alinsky LARPers are doing a fantastic job turning conservatives into fellow communists, without them even realizing it. Well played LARPers, well played. Pushing vote buying writ large, and making traditional Dem vote buying look downright amateurish. Better to hold much of the country hostage than just poor minorities, eh? Who screams for Trump to break laws, other than you LARPers? There's a constitutional process to repeal BAD LAWS and it should be followed. Only someone with no respect for the Constitution advocates for breaking the Constitution. That's Bush level "ignore capitalism to save capitalism" nonsense.

I don't know off hand what the specific wording of the CARES Act provision said about any such thing but go read the EO I linked a few posts up. The title of the EO itself says "DEFERRING PAYROLL TAX OBLIGATONS". The EO, constitutional or not, does not direct any taxes to be cut. It directs the Treasury, pursuant to federal statute, to suspend and defer, collection of tax for filers that meet certain conditions. That's it.

Read my above post. There are no tax cuts, only tax DEFERRALS. Stop saying they are tax cuts. They're not. All of these people thinking they're getting tax cuts and free money will be bigly surprised when their TAX BILLS come due next year. "But but dannno said it was a tax cut and free checks?!?!? Why do I owe $3400?!?!?"

The quick and dirty of the EOs is that they do NOT do what the Trumpkins and their echo chamber media purports they do. Admittedly, this thread title is probably inaccurate, though little to none of what they detail was constitutional in the first place. What the EOs do is: 1) "Urge" Governors to ask FEMA for money for the unemployment funds, up to $400 per eligible recipient, with a cap on how much is available from already appropriated CARES funds remaining. 2) DEFER payroll tax for anyone earning under $4000 per month. It does not "cut" taxes or repeal any taxes. 3) Housing evictions and foreclosures apply only to residents with Fannie and Freddie mortgages and those receiving federal housing/rent subsidies. 4) SUSPEND student loan payments for loans held by DoE

The EOs are released. https://www.whitehouse.gov/presidential-actions/memorandum-authorizing-needs-assistance-program-major-disaster-declarations-related-coronavirus-disease-2019/ FEMA is now in charge of disbursing money to state governments that request it, who then pay it out to "eligible claimants". This EO does not order $400 payments directly to any one whatsoever. So, in other words, more Trump fake news headlines. The EO "urges" Governors to beg FEMA for money to shore up their sagging unemployment funds. It is perhaps not unconstitutional since it is not actually a directive to spend money not appropriated. Governors have to ask FEMA for it and it is disbursed by the states, if they choose to. Either way, all 4 of today's EOs are still blatant vote buying. But that must be ok since Republicans are welfare queens now, too. Rest of EOs here: https://www.whitehouse.gov/presidential-actions/

Trump does not have executive authority to do that. Congress must repeal the relevant Title 26 to stop voluntary federal income tax. What part of the EO being unconstitutional do you not get? (eta: The EO says "TAX DEFERRED", not tax cut.) And what of directing spending that is not congressionally appropriated? HIGHLY unconstitutional. (eta: EO says Governors are "urged" to ask FEMA for money already appropriated by the CARES Act that hasn't yet been spent. No new federal spending is directed. I know that all of this is scripted well in advance but it still irks me how feckless and weak conservatives really are, despite all their gung-ho rhetoric. Trump had the number "88" (8/8) surrounding him since he started campaigning (even before then) and I have a 5 year old thread about what was planned that's happening now, here: (though you've probably already read it)

Just stop. For the love of god just stop. If you're going to insist that going around the Congress to decree "let them eat cake" is a-ok because of a contrived emergency, you have no business being on this forum any more. I remember when conservatives freaked over Obama saying "I have a phone and a pen" to get around Congress. Today? CRICKETS. Republicans/conservatives/most libertarians are a fucking joke.
