And so we come full circle ... If they are going to strike it down because of its source (EO vs. act of Congress), then: How can it possibly work to our advantage if the courts say, "This does not pass muster as an EO - but it might as an act of Congress ..."? But if they are going to strike it down because of its substance, then:

But this just puts it under the best-case "pointless and unnecessary" branch of the "either-or" I presented. (And it could end up under the worst-case "counter-productively dangerous" scenario if the BATFE decides to change its mind.) What is the point of issuing a regulatory EO that won't be enforced? How is an unenforced EO (or an enforced one, for that matter) supposed to preempt or beat down the Democrats' gun-grabbing efforts in any way? And if, as you say, the courts would give greater deference to an act of Congress, then why should the Democrats feel at all inhibited or stymied by Trump's supposedly toothless EO? Indeed, it seems that just the opposite should be the case. After all, sharks don't go away when there's blood in the water ... In short: the Trumpslanation we have been offered for this makes absolutely no sense whatsoever. The sensible explanation is that this is not a ploy and that Trump is simply a half-assed gun-grabber (as accords with the history of his remarks on the issue going back decades). No chess required.

You and dannno are trying to have it both ways ... If the courts are going to beat down Trump's crappy gun-grabby laws, then why wouldn't they beat down the Democrats' crappier gun-grabbier laws? Or to state things the other way around, if the courts are at all likely to allow the Democrats' crappier gun-grabbier laws, then why wouldn't they be at least as likely (if not more) to allow Trump's crappy gun-grabby laws? If they WOULD beat down the Democrats' crap, then why does Trump need to do anything? But if they would NOT beat down the Democrats' crap, then why should anyone expect them to beat down Trump's? IOW: Either Trump's crap is pointless and unnecessary at best (at worst, it is counter-productively dangerous if it does manage to pass judicial muster), or it is not a ploy ...

I was listening to a "conservative" talk show host on the way home form work yesterday and his idea was to build the wall AND double the foreign welfare because, he thought, if we give them more money we can prevent immigrants because their countries will be better. I was reminded of why I don't listen to talk radio.

The best gift I ever got was the Play Doh Barber Shop but I had the flu that Christmas and the smell of the Play Doh made me vomit. Another year I got the Holly Hobby Easy Bake Oven. I got excited and used up all my cake batter that morning and my mom cut the cord on the oven because she said the cakes were nasty and made me take it outside and put in the playhouse my dad built me. I used the little pans to make mud pies and I would stick them in the broken oven to dry out. I just pretended it baked. The worst gifts I got were a Bionic Barbie doll. She wasn't pretty and didn't even come with a dress I could use on my nice Barbie. She came in a goofy jogging suit. My stinky brother bought me that and my other worst gift was from another stinky brother. His cheap ass put a chunk of lead in a shoe box and wrapped it up for me. I was so excited. I thought it was gonna be good because it was so heavy. Once, my dad bought my mom a vacuum cleaner and we (it was dad's idea) took it apart and wrapped it in pieces. My mom was so pissed. I think that was when she gave up on having a nice Christmas and, after that, the gifts only went downhill. I've received everything from canned bread (it's actually not bad) to an old broken wedding clock. I've tried to put nice gifts under the tree but I want my kids to have a taste of my childhood so I always fill their stockings with crazy shit. I find the best stuff at the Asian Grocery store and Richard's Variety shop. The worst purchases I've made are the Shrimp Flavored Potato Chips (they smelled like rotten shrimp) and the Turkish Delight I bought after reading Narnia with them. It wasn't delightful. I can't believe Edmund sold out his siblings for that shit.

Man ordered to build replica of San Francisco home after illegally demolishing building A man who illegally demolished a San Francisco house designed by modernist architect Richard Neutra was ordered this week to rebuild it exactly as it was. The city Planning Commission also ordered Ross Johnston to add a sidewalk plaque telling the entire saga of the house's origins in the 1930s, its demolition and replication. Johnston purchased the 1936 residence, known as the Largent House, in 2017 for $1.7 million. Johnston had planned to remodel the 1,300-square-foot home in the Twin Peaks neighborhood and submitted his plans for the two-story house to the city, which mostly kept the first floor intact. His permit was approved.

CRAFT BEER WITH A FREE-MARKET CHARACTER As the microbrewery trend is seeing a rise everywhere in the world, 2018 saw the launch of the White Collar Brewing in Bucharest, in my native Romania. Behind the already highly acclaimed beers lies an interesting piece of information: the brewery is the entrepreneurial endeavor of an Austrian economist, professor at the Romanian-American University in Bucharest and former Mises Institute fellow, Bogdan Glăvan. Bogdan’s business started as a passion for craft beers, filling in a gap in a domestic market saturated with mass-produced, bland tasting options. Although he built it alongside his lifelong dedication to scholarship in the tradition of Mises and Rothbard in his academic profession, the two passions are not as separate as you might expect. First, one of the beers is named “Zero Taxe” (eng. Zero Taxes), a nod to the main policy recommendation of any consistent Rothbardian. Bogdan also recommends it to be enjoyed together with Mises’s Human Action. Some of his customers also subscribe to this view and their recommendations on the brewery’s homepage are equally witty: “ is so good, the government should nationalize it and redistribute it to all its citizens. IPA for the people!”

Independence Police Department squad car. Image: KMBC Bryce dealt with the perception that he was somehow to blame on a daily basis. Trying to go back to normal meant putting himself back in the community. The only thing the public knew was what had been reported, and what had been reported was that he resisted a lawful arrest, and his car smelled like marijuana. In every interaction, whether at school or out in public, the question of what he did, what responsibility he must have for his own injury, hung over him.The Independence Police Department was hardest on him. Once Bryce learned to drive again, Independence squad cars followed him several times, sometimes even pulling up next to him so the officers could smirk or wave. On one occasion, he said, he was out bowling when two officers approached him and sarcastically asked how he was doing. Matt, Stacy, and Bryce all said that the harassment has become worse. Bryce was recently ticketed for allegedly going 80 mph in a 40 mph zone by an officer who claimed he had paced the car to determine its speed instead of using a radar gun. Bryce denied he was going anywhere near that fast. Even on the night of Runnels’ sentencing, Bryce said, he was followed by an Independence squad car for at least 3 miles. In another incident, a police cruiser blocked him in; a few nights later he was pulled over. The Independence Police Department did not respond to a request for comment. Mostly Bryce struggled because he couldn’t rely on his own memory of the incident. He wanted to prove himself, but he didn’t know any of the details. All he had was the instinct that, as the son of a cop himself, he would have made sure to be respectful. “I knew, in my heart, that I didn’t do anything wrong to him,” he said. D

    3. Pro Tip: When wearing (one of) your banana costume(s), always keep an eye out for deadly black tarantulas (especially when on a boat during sunrise hours).
