I am not sure that is what the songwriters meant, but that's what I got out of it. Here's the lyrics: In a bar in Toledo across from the depot On a barstool, she took off her ring I thought I'd get closer so I walked on over I sat down and asked her name When the drinks finally hit her she said "I'm no quitter But I finally quit livin' on dreams

I looked closely at the lyrics of Lucille for the first time. It appears to be an incident with three people: Lucille, Lucille’s husband, and the narrator (Kenny). Another meaning hit me within a short while. I don’t think the story is about three people. I think it’s only the narrator (Kenny) and Lucille. The man Kenny sees in the mirror is actually himself. He was married to Lucille years ago. He sings that “for a minute I thought I was dead” not because the mountain man husband is going to beat him up, but because his soul is dead inside. Kenny is ashamed of himself for returning to Lucille. The line “I thought how she'd made him look small” is a third person reference to himself. Lucille’s looks (“she was a beauty”) is partly what makes Kenny want to return. Kenny’s mountainous stature and calloused hands make me think he is a simple, not formally educated farmer; whereas Lucille was an adventurous city girl who didn’t want four kids. The only line that threw me was Kenny asking her name. It’s not however, inconsistent because there are two Kennys in the bar: the one on the barstool and the one in mirror. The barstool Kenny attempts to forget Lucille’s transgressions to the point where he is amnesiac about her total identity, including her name. Hence, the line “I thought how he looked out of place” fits because Kenny wishes to forget Lucille’s “hurtin'” she put on him.

As he types on his chinese computer ... You'd suddenly be the King of Free Trade if you knew how far your standard of living would fall to be "independent". On the plus side you'd get real good at growing your own food if we went full protectionist. Also riding bicycles, cars would only be for the elite. Of course you wouldn't be able to post on this forum, internet access would be out.

I'm pro choice and think the same thing. I'd like to know how many politicians claimed "states rights" in supporting the decision to overturn Roe vs Wade and now support "federal power over states right's" which is what this Graham thing does. It seems like it was most of them. What a bunch of weasels. This is why I can't vote democrat or republican.

I'm usually suspicious of graphics quotes any more. I never pass them on until I really check them.

Sonny Tufts is a lawyer and prog who is paid to post here. Maybe you already knew it or don't care, but I'm not wasting my time with his fake "debate."

To be fair the republicans spend almost as much as democrats. 2020 may have been a good year to illustrate my earlier point about debt as a good indicator of economic health. In 2020 the stock market skyrocketed but so did the debt. Also as you mentioned GDP was bad. It's pretty obvious that the economy was a wreck in 2020 so debt and gdp were much more accurate indicators compared to the stock market.

The national debt is really starting to accelerate. We're about to blow past 31 trillion. As I've said before I think a spike in the debt is a really good indicator of a recession. As the economy contracts the government collects less tax revenue and more people use handouts. And it's a number that's hard to fudge. https://fiscaldata.treasury.gov/datasets/debt-to-the-penny/debt-to-the-penny

Yeah, we should have an even more steeply progressive tax rate to get that money that was stolen by all those billionaires. They don't deserve it, but I do. I could put that money to good use. That's what Karl Marx would do, he even wrote it down. The second plank of the Communist Manifesto: "A heavy progressive or graduated income tax."
