Full disclosure I'm a McAfee supporter, voted for him in the state primary and hope he wins the nomination. But I've been thinking a little bit about what could happen if Gary Johnson ends up winning the nomination (which seems likely)...
Personally, I think both McAfee and Johnson both have a shot at getting into the debates. Now, of the two, Johnson is a former popular GOP governor of a blue state, as is his running mate, William Welds.
Now, #NeverTrump Republicans (like Ben Sasse) are looking for an alternative candidate in 2016. Since it'll be nearly impossible to get one candidate in all 50 states by now, their best bet is look to the only other party with ballot access in all 50 states.
If Johnson and Welds.... two popular Republican governors in one ticket with ballot access in all 50 states... can convince these #NeverTrump Republicans of supporting them (and hoping they also take some votes from Hillary, and take independents which is possible) it can prevent Trump and Hillary from gaining the needed 270.
At that point, it goes to Congress and it's possible the Republican majority decides that a 2 term governor is better than Trump or Hillary and build a coalition around Johnson. And depending on who the VP candidate is for the Dems and Reps, the same with Wells.
