Beginning in January, the military is switching from a traditional pension system, in which retirees receive a monthly check for life based on their pay and years of service, to one that also includes investment accounts, like those commonly available to civilian workers. The new “blended” system is based, in part, on recommendations by the Military Compensation and Retirement Modernization Commission. The system needed updating, the commission said, because the military’s pension system now leaves the vast majority of service members with no retirement savings when they leave the military. Service members now must serve at least 20 years to get a pension — hence its “20 or nothing” nickname. More than 80 percent of service members leave the military short of that minimum, according to the Defense Department. The new system still offers a monthly pension, but one calculated using a formula that reduces it by 20 percent, said Michael Meese, a retired Army brigadier general and chief operating officer of the American Armed Forces Mutual Aid Association, a nonprofit group that provides insurance and other financial services to military members. (The commission’s final report noted that while its benefits recommendations weren’t “budget driven,” they would nevertheless “substantially reduce” government spending.) But service members will also receive contributions to the Thrift Savings Plan, the federal government’s version of an investment-based, 401(k) retirement plan. The military will contribute a minimum of 1 percent of the service member’s pay, even if he or she contributes nothing. The military will also chip inasmuch as 4 percent more in matching contributions, for a maximum government contribution of 5 percent. (Service members already may contribute to the Thrift Savings Plan, known for its low-cost investment funds, but the military now makes no contributions.) “Donations have been pouring in from Alabama and from all over the country in an unprecedented way,” Moore campaign manager Brett Doster told The Post on Saturday. Moore’s campaign raised $500,000 in three days last week and ramped up its online fundraising efforts, Doster said. The embattled Republican collected more online donations between Nov. 10 and Nov. 15 — the first six days after the scandal broke — than in the six weeks after winning the GOP nomination in a contentious September primary, Doster confirmed. “We are confident that we will have the resources over the next three weeks to finish strong with victory,” he said. No, the power to forbid grants everything else, all the congress must do is say "We forbid entry to anyone who does not follow the rules set forth as follows" then list the rules, anyone not following them would be forbidden. The states may have the power to be MORE restrictive and require foreigners to meet more strenuous standards to enter their territory.

No, Congress is granted the power, read the whole sentence not just the part I was emphasizing: Article 1 Section 9. The Migration or Importation of such Persons as any of the States now existing shall think proper to admit, shall not be prohibited by the Congress prior to the Year one thousand eight hundred and eight The question of whether states can control their borders is not addressed in A1S9, you could claim that they have that power under the 10th amendment since it is not prohibited them anywhere in the constitution but that has nothing to do with A1S9.

Happy Thanksgiving! I'm on strike this year. Tired of screwing my back up every year lifting the stupid turkey. I still have herniated discs from 3 years ago hauling one up the stairs. Will probably order in.

I can't believe you'd think that the "groping photo" thing would be even remotely close to being a crime. I think you are way off there. And it shouldn't be up to the victim to determine whether some act is a crime. The victim can determine if they want to press charges, but not if the act is actually criminal or not. The other part where Franken was trying to get her to rehearse the kissing scene is much worse but I still don't think it's ca real crime. A real crime needs to be physical or the threat of it. If Franken was physically trying to restrain her against her will, or threatened it, that would be a crime. But if she just has to say no and that's the end of it, it shouldn't be a crime.

A horticulturally ignorant Nationwide insurance adjuster, Jonathan Yeamans, came to the couple’s house to assess a fallen tree. He saw hibiscus flower plants he though was “suspicious” and so notified the police that it was marijuana and provided photos. The Buffalo Township police, who ought to know the difference between hibiscus flowers and marijuana, proved just as ignorant and incompetent. In response to the photo, the police sent an assault team with rifles drawn. They handcuffed and placed the elderly couple in a police cruiser for over four hours while searching the home and damaging the premises. The couple insisted these were ordinary hibiscus flower plants, but officers called them liars and told Ms. Cramer her husband had been lying to her. Eventually a police sergeant informed the Department that hibiscus flower plants are not marijuana, and they released the handcuffed couple to their damaged home without any charges. Even after its adjuster’s accusations were proven false, Nationwide Insurance, which initiated the fiasco, nevertheless then notified the couple three weeks later that marijuana was found on their property and it would be cancelling their insurance until the plants were removed. http://pittsburgh.cbslocal.com/2017/11/16/hibiscus-marijuana-mix-up-buffalo-township/

Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi, for the second time in as many days, has delivered a stern warning to Ethiopia over a dam it is building after the two countries along with Sudan failed to approve a study on its potential effects. Ethiopia is finalizing construction of Africa's largest hydroelectric dam on the Blue Nile. Egypt fears that will cut into its water supply. I do not like to make a lot of it at a time. If you make a small batch of it, you should generally use it within a month. I buy raw peanuts and keep them in the freezer. When I want to make a small batch I take them out and put them on a cookie sheet and roast them first.

“The wolf shall dwell with the lamb, and the leopard shall lie down with the young goat, and the calf and the lion and the fattened calf together; and a little child shall lead them. The cow and the bear shall graze; their young shall lie down together; and the lion shall eat straw like the ox.

They shall not hurt or destroy in all my holy mountain; for the earth shall be full of the knowledge of the Lord as the waters cover the sea.”
