I just finished reading Gulag Archipelago... I was struck by how Solzhenitsyn described the justice system in the Soviet Union. Theft was almost encouraged as long at the targets were the "right" people. The thinking was that if someone had wealth, they got it by devious means and therefore taking it from them was acceptable. But if you so much as took a fallen apple from a tree owned by the state, you'd get 10 years in Siberia. Not sure why I thought of that just now...
