Yep. As much as he’s anti-liberty on a whole host of issues, Trump deserves a lot of credit on this one. The long term impact is pretty minimal because you’d really need Congress to act, but 3,000 some new regulations in a year is pretty amazing. Usually the number is way higher! And Trump has stopped or rolled backed some pretty significant regulations. The next President could put all of those right back, but there will be a political cost to do so all at once. As a businessman, Trump directly felt the implications of the regulatory state. That’s a good thing - it led him to make some decent appointments to lead a few agencies that write regulations like they’re getting paid by the letter. Now, it doesn’t make me gaga like dannno, but you gotta give credit where it’s due. Obama did a few good things too.

Bully? I would say they get replaced by another entity that understands how to respond to the wants of the consumer. And since wants are infinite and ever changing, so will be the businesses that respond to them.

The LAST thing we need is added time in government edukashun camps! I think anything that "messes up" the lesson plans is a good thing! The problem with this 'protest' is that this is part of the lesson plan.

Ok, now hold your horses... This situation is a perfect example of how markets operate. I remember the time when Toys R Us was considered the category killer and there were calls to "do something about them" because they were pushing out Mom & Pop toys stores and even toy sales in department stores. They were considered the Big Corporate bad guy! Things change. Amazon will have its time and it will pass as well.

Like I said in the other thread... A 17 minute walkout from government schools is a good start - next time, they should walk out and never go back. Those places are dangerous to young minds - and it has nothing to do with shootings.

Whoa whoa whoa... Are you trying to suggest that individuals can make up their minds about what they value without government forcing them to make the centrally-planned choices?! That's just crazy talk! (outta rep)

So they walked out of government schools for 17 minutes? Good start, I suppose. Maybe next they can just walk out and never go back!

Oh come on, now - that's not true. Have you seen the fundraising numbers!! I've always said that nothing increases the fundraising of both political parties like a fearful figure in charge and an opposition just within striking distance.

As someone who was interested in his work, sadly, I think he may have outlived his contributions. His earlier work was quite impressive. But then, he started delving into matters that were outside of his realm of expertise. Happens to the best of them. They get famous for their contributions and then think they can apply that same intellect to other issues. Had he died in his 30's, he would have been known as one of the great theoretical physicists. Instead, his later life was spent spreading gibberish about global warming, AI, and human evolution. I'll prefer to remember him for the things that mattered and ignore the rest.

First, do no more harm. Ok, you want to give him a pass on not fixing things - fine. I get it - it's hard to turn a ship around. But how do you give him a pass on making things worse?! Spending increases, expanded military, violation of civil liberties - no, these things are real. And I suppose you like Trump's 'timbre' of "take the guns first; worry about due process later"? What would be you're sentiment if Obama made that statement?! What about if GWB increased military spending on a Trumpian scale?! Come on - you're under the spell. Just like the Obamabots. The only "bigger game afoot" is the game he's playing on you. You would have condemned nearly anyone else in that position, but you're giving this guy a pass, because you really want to believe that he's different than all the rest of him. No one is expecting anyone to get us out of the hole right away, but dammit, can't we at least expect them to stop digging?! Back on topic, this tariff talk is emblematic of more digging. Funny how Trump's actions seem to be just as bad as his words.

Pretty hard to off-shore a construction contractor job. Again, I'm not sure what you have against American jobs. If we can get some materials cheaper, then we all have more wealth. Yeah, it may hurt an industry that is in competition with those external resources, but in the aggregate we are ALL more wealthy. We'll have those materials AND extra wealth. Which means more American jobs, like a contractor, that are difficult to outsource. But go ahead and play the cronyism game... Save the factory workers at the expense of all the contractors out there and at the expense of every American consumer. I'm still not sure why you care more about saving the Chinese money than you do about American workers. This is pretty shameful, if you ask me.

Yeah, of course they are. Things were so much more productive when we would spend hours each day washing our clothes by hand. And if we could just go back to churning butter by hand, maybe I'd feel more "productive" at breakfast.

Wait a minute... I can't keep up with you protectionists. So now we are enriching the Chinese? I thought they were subsidizing their production to sell their products at a lower cost - which means they'd be losing every time they made the trade. And if I'm buying steel at a reduce cost, wouldn't I be enriching myself? Because now I have the steel plus some extra money to use elsewhere... I mean, there's an obvious reason why American consumers buy those goods, right? Because it gives us each more money for other things. A steel worker may have lost his job, but now I get to hire a contractor to build my deck. Why do you hate contractors? Who is going to stand up for his job?! I guess he's just not as politically connected to benefit from your brand of cronyism. So let's review: You want contractors to lose their jobs. And you want to stop taking advantage of the Chinese because you're putting their interests above ours. Tsk, tsk. And you're calling other people traitors...

In case you hadn't noticed, he's 25% of the way through his first term. Everything you're saying about Trump could easily have been said about Obama at this time had you the predilection. "Oh, give him a chance." "Yeah, we know he advocates for some extremely anti-liberty positions, but that's just because he's tricking the establishment." "He's a total outsider to the Washington machine - he's gonna drain the swamp! But you can't expect him to do it all at once - they'd catch onto him." Sorry, Pal. You've fallen under the spell of your own hope. A tool that Trump has used for years and even wrote about. (he probably saw Obama using his hope game and thought, "hell I can do this better!") He bombs the Middle East at an expanded rate - oh, but Hillary would have been worse! He signs a HUMONGOUS spending increase - Yeah, but that's because he's gonna cut spending later He grows government and the military at an alarming rate - Yeah, but he got a tax cut through.. He gives cover for control measures - oh, but that's because he's saving us from something worse Seriously, the list goes on and on. He's done some decent things, but on the whole, he's been horrible for liberty. Even worse than that, he completely decimated the liberty movement by hypnotizing many of our allies into believing he's actually helping us. And then there's his anti-liberty rhetoric on every subject imaginable - ahy should I not believe his rhetoric when his actions are so closely aligned to them?!

Well, Ron has addressed this in the past. First of all, the consumers in China pay that import duty - not Elon. Second of all, Ron Paul would just lower our tariffs regardless of what other countries may or may not do since it hurts us more than them anyway. But I'm not buying the "Trump is just doing this as a negotiation ploy" argument. This guy has been pro-tariffs forever. Unless, he's been putting on that show for decades because he knew one day he'd be President and wanted to maintain his leverage - I'm just not that convinced there's 32817D chess going on here. I am open to using our lowering of tariffs as a negotiation tool to encourage other countries to do the same, which is a little different than Ron Paul. He'd like a complete and immediate ramp down - I'm more willing to take a slower approach if we could use it to our advantage. But I would NEVER agree that we should RAISE our taxes as a way to get other countries to lower theirs - that's just ludicrous!

erowe1, are you seriously taking the position that cops are "innocent until proven guilty"? Or are you just messing with people here to see if they are parroting what they've been told without thinking about it?

Mind you, I'm not talking about the not-so-subtle "Let's lynch 'em" attitude. I tend to think that's a bad idea, even if I philosophize in weird directions sometimes (its part of my efforts to stay sane while surrounded by statists IRL, give me a break). But, there is a difference between saying "we shouldn't condone harming X for Y or Z reasons" and saying "X is actually innocent."

Note, also by "innocent" I don't even mean morally sinless, I just mean per the NAP. I'd honestly be shocked if there is a single cop who's been on the force for more than a week who isn't an NAP violator. Do you disagree?

Thanks for the sermon. Good stuff. I passed it on to my parents. My dad's a pastor so I'd love to see him converted to the view of Romans 13 that you take or a similar one.

Just out of curiosity, how well received was that message in your church?

Thanks. One of my brothers in Christ who I respect and love told me that a Christian man should spend more time with his brothers than people in the world. I was spending so much time on the forums with these unbelievers, and when he said that, I was extremely convicted. There is nothing like spending time with brothers who build you up in the Lord and sharpen you.
