Pardon me, but which finite resources, dickhead? Coal? Natural gas? Okay, sure - eventually we'll run out of those things. But you don't seem to understand that human ingenuity is a real and actual thing - Do you want to know how I KNOW that? It's because before coal and natural gas became sources of power and, in your fucked up mind, "pollutants", they were bits of nothing within and on the earth. It wasn't until - here we go again - human beings comingled their intellect with those things - that they became sources of energy. That process isn't done yet. No matter how much regressives like you may wish. And - speaking as a person making his living off of natural gas - I actually 100% welcome the day when cold fusion becomes a reality, or whatever other as-unyet-tapped-source-of-energy rolls our wheels forward! You're just another control freak, assuming you know exactly what, and in what measure, human beings require. You're wrong, of course... and your HUMBRIS will result in the death of millions.

I don't doubt it. They always have reasons for the laws they make - usually not good reasons, but reasons nonetheless. Indeed, they often have at least two reasons - one for public consumption ("People will die!", "It's for the children!", etc.), and one that actually motivates them ("muh powerz!", "muh revenooz!", etc.).

Have you ever driven across the United States? I have, east-west and north-south through the heartland of this country. You want to know what is there? NOTHING. There are hundreds of miles that you can drive without seeing more than 2 buildings at a single time. And that's JUST the US. I'm sure that it's even more barren through Russia, China, vast sections of Africa, etc. The trope that the planet is overpopulated is nonsense. I'm old enough to remember when the Cayahoga river was on fire. I'm old enough to remember when you couldn't see Pittsburgh when you were sitting on top of it. There maybe parts of the world that are dirty and polluting, but it ain't here. You know who thinks that the planet is overpopulated and dirty? People who live in overpopulated and dirty cities.

Actually, it is not obvious at all. The mere existence of "earth-like" planets (for any value of "earth-like") is not even remotely close to being sufficient to warrant such a conclusion. We have no idea how life begins, let alone what the "odds" are of it happening under any particular set of conditions. And once life does begin, we have no idea what the "odds" are that (some of) it will develop the kind of "intelligence" we refer to as sentience. And once sentience develops, we have no idea what the "odds" are that it will be technologically capable.

What the hell are you babbling about, chief? Mass surveillance was not a secret in Orwell's 1984. The slogan "Big Brother is watching" was expressly used by the Party to remind everyone that they were always subject to being watched, anytime, anywhere, publicly and privately. There was no secret about it whatsoever. They wanted everyone to know. That was the whole damn point, you idiot ... Make Orwell Fiction Again

Bunch of people in here who seem to be able to foretell the future. Kinda surprising that you're posting on an internet backwater forum given how rich you must obviously be. The point in the OP was that there is no clear lane for the Liberty Movement in the current US/global political traffic pattern. Secessionism is one clear and unoccupied area where we could stake our flag. The fact is, it will come. Sure as God made little green apples, it will come. If we're occupying the space when the moment arrives, we'll have the upper hand. Think about that.

Good. Sadly, Trump deciding (for the moment) to refrain from making things even worse than he already has is pretty much the best that could reasonably have been hoped for. Let's just hope his (advisors') restraint over his gun-grabby impulses survives the next election (assuming he wins) ...

Then I will continue saying exactly what I have been saying all along (in this thread and many others): Donald Trump is a wishy-washy, half-assed gun grabber who is just too chickenshit to take things any further, out of fear of alienating his base before the election. (And as I have also said before: after the election, if he wins, then all bets are off and there is no telling what the hell he will or won't end up doing ...) But even if "nothing has happened, and no laws have been passed," Trump will still have thoroughly chummed the water for the sharks with "lots of talk, lots of willing to negotiate" - such as he has already done with his "take the guns first, due process later" rhetoric, his voicing of support for "red flag" laws, his firearms-accessory regulation via executive-order fiat, and whatever the hell kind of mealy-mouthed, half-assed wiffle-waffle he ends up endorsing in this upcoming proposal. Not only do I acknowledge the possibility, but that possibility is the very reason I refer to Trump as a "half-assed" gun grabber in the first place.

There is no guessing or knee-jerking involved. Trump is a wishy-washy, half-assed gun grabber, and he has never been anything else. One needs to wait for the release of Trump's wishy-washy, half-assed gun-grabbing proposal no more than one would, under other circumstances, need to wait for the release of Hillary's waffle-free, full-assed gun-grabbing proposal. The question is not, "Will it be bad?" The question is "How bad will it be?" And that is a consequence of the fact that Trump has been nothing but a wretched liability to the gun-rights movement. (But by all means, keep up the willfully obtuse pretense that you don't already know all this and need to see his proposal first before you can figure it out ...)

How many gun deaths do Alzheimer's victims cause each year? "Legislating to the exception" is why we are drowning in a sea of laws and regulations without ebb. Every "obvious" reason that there "ought to be a law" (because something "bad" might happen) is pregnant with opportunities for never-ending extension and expansion (not to mention corruption and abuse). For just a few examples: - Who gets to decide "who is out of it mentally?" - Shouldn't we also prohibit the mentally-out-of-it from owning or using knives? Cars? Anything else that might be deemed dangerous? (And who is to do the deeming?) - Shouldn't we also prohibit those who live with the mentally-out-it from owning or using the same things? After all, if I own guns and my father, who lives with me is "mentally out of it" ... How about this - rather than trying to preemptively constrain what some people might do (a slippery slope that has no bottom), just hold people responsible for the things they have actually done (or failed to do, in the case of negligence - such as allowing my father with Alzheimer's to get hold of one of my guns and use it to hurt or kill someone). Tragedies happen. They always have, and they always will. Trying to obviate them preemptively is a never-ending utopian treadmill that will do nothing but create an ever-growing and increasingly untenable mountain of laws and rules, to the benefit of no one but lawyers and rulers ...

What they should do is let everyone vote once every day. Then, at the end of each EY (Electoral Year - sort of like FY for "Fiscal Year"), they add up all the votes and the winner gets to be President for the next EY. (They could even release quarterly reports for running vote totals.) That way, when someone says something like, "electronic cigarettes are not useful for hunting - as such, they are not protected under the 2nd Amendment and should therefore be banned," then we can vote for that person on that day. But then, if the next day the same person says something like, "We should not invade and conquer Canada just because they don't know how to make bacon right," then we can vote against that person on that day. What's really great about this system is that we won't get hung up wondering what to do when we agree with Candidate X on Issue A but not on Issue B, and we agree with Candidate Y on Issue B but not on Issue A. Just vote really hard for X (and against Y) because of A on Monday, and then vote really hard for Y (and against X) because of B on Tuesday. Rinse and repeat, every day throughout the year. Problem solved!

On the one hand he has made pro-gun statements but taken no real life action of any kind in a pro-gun direction. His statements, therefore, remain mere rhetoric. On the other hand, he has made many anti-gun statements and ALSO taken decisive real life action in an anti-gun direction (bump stock ban). Objectively the scales weigh heavily in an anti-gun direction.

Bullshit. People are drawing logical conclusions based upon Trump's statements and actions to this point, and quite reasonably projecting what his next likely move will be. Your insistance that they're "attacking nothing" is ridiculous.

    Hi,

I can't remember if it was in chat or in a thread but you wrote a very basic understanding of NAP. Something about authorizing force or being a victim of force. Do you remember what I'm talking about?

    Thanks

Radical in the sense of being in total, root-and-branch opposition to the existing political system and to the State itself. Radical in the sense of having integrated intellectual opposition to the State with a gut hatred of its pervasive and organized system of crime and injustice. Radical in the sense of a deep commitment to the spirit of liberty and anti-statism that integrates reason and emotion, heart and soul. - M. Rothbard

On the Importance of Theory

by Cabal on 03-29-2014 at 03:43 PM
Thinking aloud, so to speak...

There is a mindset prevalent among the politically interested that seem to segregate 'theory' from 'reality', as if to suggest these things are mutually exclusive, and that a focus on the former produces, or otherwise indicates, an aversion to the latter. Thus, this mindset tends to celebrate a regard for the latter while rejecting the significance of the former. I submit that this is an erroneous, and perhaps even a destructive mindset.

The Rite

by Cabal on 09-27-2013 at 07:52 AM
A promise, a lie, a sleight of hand
This is what will move a man
To cede his trust, and time, and being
To any stranger who says We can

Do this, and that, foretell some change
Fabricate hope, and cease the reigns
Pay no heed to history's past
This time's difference will prove us sane

So to the circus we shall head
Starving for this daily bread
In our wake a cardinal path
As if these passages we never read
