Disclaimer: I'm a 64 year old Caucasian male who's never been married - so I probably don't have any street cred on this. I do have two children though and went through a custody battle over them; and was exposed to the background on the 50% divorce rate myth due to involvement with Fathers' Rights groups. There's a debate over how "divorce rate" is measured. So that really needs to be defined before labeling any divorce rate figures. The 50% figure started when a New York Times guest editorial mentioned that in one year in the 1980's the number of divorces equaled almost half the number of marriages. That's not an almost 50% divorce rate - because, for the most part, the people getting divorced in that year aren't the same ones who got married in that year. You'd have to break it out on a year-by-year basis to get the truth (how many couples married in 1975 got divorced, for instance). Nobody tracks that data; they only track the number of marriages and the number of divorces - and that's not the information that you're looking for. What you're really interested in is what percentage of couples that get married stay married. Intuitively, you'd be tempted to say that's the same as 100% minus the divorce rate. But that's not the case because of the many people that engage in serial divorcing. I almost married one of those in 1979 who's now been divorced five times. You'd have to come up with five successful "til death do us part" marriages to cancel out her train wrecks and average out to a 50% divorce rate (10 marriages, 5 divorces). So what's the rate of couples that remain married until death do they part? Hard to say because nobody tracks it. It has to be extrapolated from other data using methods that are open to interpretation and quite questionable. About the only answer I could give to it's magnitude would be "Not Enough". Even that scientific answer begs the question "Not Enough For What", and is thus open to interpretation. All that said, the woman in my life was married to her husband for 35 years before he passed away a few years ago. We'd get married now, but we both have children at home who don't deserve having a new family situation thrust upon them. Then again, maybe it doesn't make any sense to get married: we're both financially secure and it's not like we're going to be having any more children.

Strikes me that what's hitting the restaurants' bottom lines is that customers are paying for Grub-hub delivery rather than adult beverages at the restaurant. I can almost buy a six-pack for what I pay for a beer at a restaurant - the difference goes to restaurant profit. It's almost as bad with soft drinks. That and maybe that customers are making two or three meals out of a delivered meal, when they'd eat it as one meal at the restaurant (at least that's what I do - and shedding excess pounds in the process).

And due to that, at some point the Fed will no longer be able to raise rates.

I'm not a fan of Rauner, but I'm trying to figure out how he "let" Republicans surrender on the income tax. He vetoed the income tax increase and the legislature over-rode the veto. If you want the income reduced, you've got to elect legislators that will reduce it. Granted, you need a governor that will approve the reduction, but Rauner is already on that bandwagon. I'm still trying to figure out the "reduction in property tax" plank in her platform. Property taxes are a local issue and the battle ought to be fought at that level. Hell, my property taxes have decreased 5% in the last decade ... so I'd just as soon keep the state from meddling in local affairs.

Jim, I know the state takes a lot in income taxes (and their cut of sales taxes), but I'm looking at my property tax bill and don't see anything going directly to the state. My big hitters are local school taxes, which together amount to almost 70% of my tax bill. Maybe it's state mandates on education that you're referring to? I pay my income taxes to Missouri, since I work across the border ... and honestly, I'd be getting a better tax rate if I were able to pay in Illinois (even after last year's tax rate increases). Mind you ... anything above 0% is too much.

So 1.1 ounce is still illegal. And you better phase your plantings so only two are mature at any point in time. I do see a market for grow lights in Vermont though.

I don't exactly remember. But it wasn't scientific, it was an opinion.
