This week's homily is up :) 1/21-32nd Sunday after Pentecost and 15th Sunday of Luke; Venerable Meximos the Confessor; Martyr Neophytos of Nicea; Venerable Zodimas, Bishop of Syracuse in Sicily; Venerable Maximos the Greek of Russia Epistle Timothy 4:9-15 Gospel Luke 19:1-10 Learned how to say my name in Arabic. :) Pretty happy because I'm getting better at holding ison, so perhaps I'll have a chance to chant during liturgy some day soon. I would enjoy learning the chant literature as a supplement to scripture and other readings. :)

No, exactly the opposite. Please read the rest of that post. I believe the Bible is a letter from God to us. And that is out of context and not what you think it means. It means without both the work of the Spirit and apostolic doctrine, we would remain in darkness. In the context of the earlier verses the text is about "letting abide in what you which you heard from the beginning"(apostolic teaching). We don't trust the Fathers "just because"-we trust them because they have legitimate authority in forming Christianity-. Some because they operated in direct apostolic lineage(we see the creation of clergy with direct lineage in Acts), others because they evangelized (such as my patron saint, Cyrill, minister to the slavs). Still others actually formed doctrine and dogma(Augustine, John the Theologian, etc). And so on.

Lol. There was only 1 person in my lifetime I have ever believed would actually remove a Department and it's the guy this site was named after. What gives anyone the idea that Trump is going to start chopping Departments? I'll believe this when I see it.

There's a lot to be said for that. The illiterate slavs learned from Cyrill and Methodius by way of icons and oratory for a good many years until Cyrill could develop his alphabet to translate the Bible and other documents into Slavonic. And it worked well. These two men are to this day known as "Enlighteners Of The Slavs".

You're actually mostly right, and that's been widely known for centuries. That's why Sola Sriptura is an epic fail and why we need the help of the Church Fathers to understand WTF the scriptures mean.

Hey Pete, I keep forgetting to ask-is your druidism related to the Druze religion by chance? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Druze I read about it as a catechumen and found it very interesting.

:) ~hugs~ I think we should pray for Sola, too. Poor guy is clearly in desperate need of peace and is definitely not finding it in the faith he's chosen. :( As it is written, "love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who spitefully use you and persecute you, that you may be sons of your Father in heaven; for He makes His sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust."

Aw, Sola got ban hammered again? :( Kurwa. Now there's nobody to expose us to the madness of his worldview and theology-and give me practice shooting down his arguments. :(

Where? Show us one verse that supports the view that God has no love or compassion for those of His children who don't pass through the narrow door. Did Abraham come within an inch of sacrificing Isaac because he didn't love the kid, and was mad at him? So if that equation wasn't so simple, what makes you think God's decision causes Him no pain at all? Did He tell you? Did He carve it in stone and make you climb the mountain for it, or did He just call your cell phone? Arrogant cuss. Here's another theological question for you to ignore: Is there a difference between someone who assumes intimate details of God's psyche and reports them as fact without a shred of evidence, and a false prophet?

And that section of Romans 11 is about Christians helping non-Christians to know and to choose God. But I was waiting to see if he had a more entertaining way to twist those verses than even SF's chicanery.

I think it's obvious by now that the OP is not going to admit that blind partisanship is worse than useless--it's a way to hand the battle to the enemy. But if anyone else has any doubts, consider the Pro Life Voter. Roe v. Wade happened, and the Republican politicians began promising to do something about it. So, those opposed to abortion began voting for them. Then the Republicans did nothing about abortion at all. So, the Pro Life Voters began to question the efficacy of voting for Republicans. Then the trolls began saying, well, they might do something someday, and Democrats don't even promise to do anything to stop it. So since Republicans are a maybe and Democrats are a no, you might as well take your chances with the Republicans. This kept Pro Life Voters on the Ruling Parties Bandwagon for a couple of decades. But then the grumbling started again. So the trolls said, you could go third party. But you can vote Republican just to send a message. So vote Republican, and maybe people will think every Republican voter is sending that message. Now it's 44 years later, and what did all that blind partisanship get for the Pro Life Voter? Abortion is a foregone conclusion, and no politician even pretends he intends to do anything about it any more. Seems to me there's a lesson in that for us, somehow. Fuck partisanship. Going partisan for either of these parties is akin to pulling down your pants, bending over, and placing a tube of lube on your tailbone. Calling partisans stupid is an insult to stupid people.

Neither of those make your case if you're arguing against free will. For example, the whole of Romans 8:18-27 is just Paul explaining how the Spirit aids us through suffering. Contextomy FTW.

It's brilliant. If Democrats vote against it, suddenly it no longer matters to young voters who shut down the government. The Republicans were forced to vote for the end of Prohibition, but regardless of what they were really voting for, they voted for it. The Democrats were voting against Republican success, not marijuana, but they voted against Prohibition nevertheless. I love when the Pauls jack with the partisan games. The amendment probably won't pass, so we ought to spread the word about this thing now.

Darkness is de facto "made" by the creation of light, as it is simply the absence of light. Likewise. evil is "made" when creation departs from good using its free will. "goodness was given by God, Himself being the cause and beginning of all that is good; evil is nothing else but a departure from goodness, in the manner that darkness is a continuation and opposite of light;…doing evil is not congenital with man but a matter of volition." Saint John of Damascus ETA: see also what lily said^^

My God is certainly omniscient. Why would you worship a God that authored(created) evil at all? We know that God considered all His creation good at its inception (Gen 1-2). "goodness was given by God, Himself being the cause and beginning of all that is good; evil is nothing else but a departure from goodness, in the manner that darkness is a continuation and opposite of light;…doing evil is not congenital with man but a matter of volition." But you're sure working to make it possible. The principles of liberty are timeless and ageless. Sacrificing those for partisanship may seem like a necessary evil for limiting the erosion in the short term. But it opens the door for that dreaded 'leftward drift' to happen to this place. Indeed, it makes it happen immediately, because the overwhelming majority of Republicans are left of libertarians. The very act of labelizing, demonizing and trying to hound leftists out of the conversation moves this place to the left. And pretending the difference between Democrats and mainstream Republicans is substantial and meaningful is a complete anathema to the site's purpose. Trying to protect the site from people on the 'wrong side' of the partisan divide does more to destroy it than leftists can ever do.

He's making an ass of himself. Now's not the time to discourage him. So, Zippy, is this an intel report? Are the totalitarians trying to redefine revenge killings as post facto defense of loved ones, despite the fact that it clearly brings no one back to life, so they can redefine actual self defense as per facto revenge, and use that propaganda to make self defense illegal? I honestly thought posting silly zerohedge partisan tripe couldn't possibly lead to anything positive, but I guess I was wrong. Zippy's using the opportunity to make an ass of himself, and maybe alerting us to a future totalitarian strategy. Such a deal.
