Yeah, you can never tell anymore. These people are not really known for the strict adherence to principles. Republicans had traditionally been opposed to foreign wars of adventurism, but that changed for 20-30 years there.

Ironically, I wonder if we'll see them take a more open position to free trade. Historically, the left has been the party of controlled trade, but Trump sorta co-opted that policy. I guess the question becomes, did they really shift their thinking or was it just a show to oppose Trump?

230 is funny. Democrats hate it and want it repealed entirely. https://www.theverge.com/2020/1/17/21070403/joe-biden-president-election-section-230-communications-decency-act-revoke They think that it allows companies to promote false information. Democrats never liked free speech anyway - they just want to be the ones controlling speech and allowable information. Trump had a problem with 230(c)(2) which provided additional protection for companies to remove content that they didn't like as long as they did it in "good faith". From my perspective, I'd like to see a class action litigation to determine what constitutes, "good faith". I really think that would solve the problem. It would encourage stronger two-way contracts, foster competition and protect the free speech of participants on these sites without fear of censorship of political viewpoints.

That is not going to happen. Trump is the star of the show! The specter of Trump is great for ratings and fundraising. Now each politician will figure out how best to position himself within the ranks and with their donors and (to a far lesser extent) their constituents, but Trump will remain the centerpiece of their focus.

Yeah, I don't think 230 needs repealed... Just a civil litigation of 230(c)(2).

No. Class action lawsuits will work just fine. Remove the protections that allowed the monopolies to exist in the first place.

What they did was a bad sign. It is a bad omen that private companies decide to silence and censor. It is an attack on freedom. Let's not be creating a world media power with the power to control which speech can be heard. This is a Holy Inquisition to shape public opinion that is really serious. We have to be thinking about options and alternatives. And I am hopeful that this is a turning point. And I agree that this was heavy-handed and arrogant by the owners of these platforms and web hosts. So pretty much nothing I disagree with in his statement. Now, this was a Q&A and not a speech, so I'm not sure there was more on this topic. There are two freedoms at play here and I don't think we need to favor one over the other. I think we can fully support both. Freedom of speech and freedom of association. I explained in another thread that these are natural rights. Governments can infringe on those, but so can private citizens or companies. Ultimately, here's what I think needs to happen: "Service agreements" with these hosts need to be construed as two-way contracts. If the host violates the contract by removing my content without my consent, they need to be held liable in civil court. If they can show that my content violated their rules and that they enforce their rules without regard to political ideology, then they'll win. If I can show that they removed my content on the basis of ideology (unless they have that provision in their contract) then I'd win the tort which would also come with punitive damages. In this case, it could be a class action! This would prevent these tech companies from using this heavy-handed, one-sided approach to content management. The contracts or "service agreements" should be time-limited by both parties so if at some point, one or the other decides they don't like the arrangement, they can back out without penalty. It would also encourage competitors and remove barriers to entry. This supports freedom of association and also supports free speech.

I traveled across the country this past fall. I liked to get a sense of the local culture, so when I got to a good stopping point in my audiobook, I turned on the local talk radio. Often, I found NPR. NPR is so full of lies, it's nauseating. No matter which market I was near, NPR preached virus fear, social justice, and Trump hatred. And that's all. On a constant loop - just with different words. The worst part is that the intelligentsia LOVES them some NPR. If that's all you heard, it's not surprising that this nonsense leeches into their brains. They literally consume garbage and feel so good about themselves. Not surprising that NPR gave that show a bunch of airtime or that the performers were playing it up for their audience.

While heading into town I put on NPR to get a feel for what the enemy is up to. They were broadcasting the impeachment proceedings live and all I can say is that the Democrats seem to have no ability to express truth. One after the other, with the occasional traitorous Republican in tow, they spewed lies upon bullshit for hours. The feigned moral outrage and their feeble attempts at sounding patriotic were sickening to hear. They should be arrested, tried, convicted, and very coldly executed for the crimes they have committed this day. The one Republican member I liked, and I cannot recall her name, ended her minute on the floor with "I call bullcrap". Pelosi was yielded one minute, but spoke for about eight. The same for most of the Democrats. The miss whose name I cannot recall was cut off at "bullcrap", but from another mic we could hear that she was still talking, so the Democrats showed themselves to be the most scurrilous filth imaginable. The whole ordeal was utterly nauseating. America has hit a new low, the saddest and most foreboding thing about being that it stands to get a whole lot worse in the coming months.

acptulsa started a thread 90.0 FM in U.S. Political News
Been doing some traveling lately, and using the seek function of the radio. I discovered something interesting. Radio stations have popped up all across the country on the frequency 90.0 FM, all illegally broadcasting dead air. That means broadcasting a signal that produces no sound (or image). This has been going on at least two months. Now, I don't know anyone who could get away with broadcasting in the same frequency as nearby stations, or illegally broadcasting dead air, except government. These things are even popping up where there's only one or two other stations, like south central Idaho and northwestern Arizona. Why do odd discoveries like this always make me wonder how Washington, D.C. is going to use it against us?

Sounds like an interesting experiment. In the old Ron Paul Forums days, we'd target something, focus our fire, and highlight the hypocrisy of the press. Man, I miss those days.

My personal story (pt2)

by CaptUSA on 02-24-2016 at 09:57 AM
Among my many interests was electricity and I decided that I wanted to change how the industry operates. Understanding the free market as I did, I was pissed that the coolest discovery in the history of mankind was being regulated to death by the government. I wanted to change that.

I found a job as a part-time temporary meter reader. My girlfriend went ballistic that I was quitting a salaried job for a part-time temp job, but I had complete confidence in what I was doing. Meter

My personal story (pt 1)

by CaptUSA on 02-24-2016 at 09:55 AM
I’ve never used this blog feature before, but since people have wondered (and asked) about my personal story, I figured it was best to do it in here rather than the forums.

It may come across as anecdotal, but I assure you that this same type free market story is working itself out all over the country and the globe. Even in the face or increasing government interference.

I was born in Western PA the third of four boys. When I was still a baby, the second child died
