Harvey Weinstein was convicted Monday of rape and sexual assault against two women and was led off to prison in handcuffs, sealing his dizzying fall from powerful Hollywood studio boss to archvillain of the #MeToo movement. The 67-year-old Weinstein had a look of resignation on his face as he heard the verdict that could put him away for the rest of his life. The charges carry up to 29 years behind bars. “This is the new landscape for survivors of sexual assault in America, I believe, and it is a new day. It is a new day because Harvey Weinstein has finally been held accountable for crimes he committed,” District Attorney Cyrus Vance Jr. said. “Weinstein is a vicious, serial sexual predator who used his power to threaten, rape, assault and trick, humiliate and silence his victims.” Weinstein’s lawyers said they will appeal. President Trump’s immigration policies — like travel bans and visa restrictions or refugee caps and asylum changes — have begun to deliver on a longstanding goal: Legal immigration has fallen more than 11 percent and a steeper cut is looming. While Mr. Trump highlights the construction of a border wall to stress his war on illegal immigration, it is through policy changes, not physical barriers, that his administration has been able to seal the United States. Two more measures were to take effect by Monday, an expansion of his travel ban and strict wealth tests on green card applicants. “He’s really ticking off all the boxes. It’s kind of amazing,” said Sarah Pierce, a policy analyst with the Migration Policy Institute, a nonpartisan research group. “In an administration that’s been perceived to be haphazard, on immigration they’ve been extremely consistent and barreling forward.” The number of people who obtained lawful permanent residence, besides refugees who entered the United States in previous years, declined to 940,877 in the 2018 fiscal year from 1,063,289 in the 2016 fiscal year, according to an analysis of government data by the National Foundation for American Policy. Four years ago, legal immigration was at its highest level since 2006, when 1,266,129 people obtained lawful permanent residence in the United States. Although the data provides only a glimpse of the effect of Mr. Trump’s agenda, immigration experts said it was the first sign of a decline that coming policies are most likely to exacerbate. Those include the wealth tests, which will be imposed on immigrants applying for green cards from both inside and outside the United States. Around two-thirds of the immigrants who obtained permanent legal status from 2012 to 2016 could be blocked from doing so under the new so-called public charge rule (Excerpt) Read more at nytimes.com ...

A retired NYPD police officer who died by suicide on Long Island last week was the second active or former city cop to take his own life in a span of four days, the Daily News has learned. Daniel Shirreffs, 46, hanged himself inside his home in Seaford on Thursday, sources with knowledge of the case said. Shirreffs retired from the NYPD last year, sources said. He had served the department for 23 years and was last assigned to the NYPD Driver Education and Training Unit, which is headquartered at Floyd Bennett Field in Brooklyn. Culture groups exist, and language is a big part of culture. Some Cubans may be conservative but many are just anti-Castro and want us to be interventionist.

President Trump reportedly told Attorney General William Barr that he wanted to do away with the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act. In a discussion last year about reauthorizing the spying law, Trump said he would rather abolish the law altogether than overhaul it, according to Axios. Barr told Trump reauthorization was needed, without any changes, for national security reasons. Several provisions of the law are set to expire in less than a month. "I trust you, Bill, but if it was up to me, we'd get rid of the whole thing,” Trump said, according to a source familiar with the conversation. The discussion happened several months before the Justice Department's independent watchdog released a blistering report on its investigation into alleged surveillance abuses against the Trump campaign during the 2016 election. Ron Paul's position from 2007: The talk must stop. We must secure our borders now. A nation without secure borders is no nation at all. It makes no sense to fight terrorists abroad when our own front door is left unlocked. This is my six point plan:

One soldier was killed in the Haitian capital of Port-au-Prince on Sunday, local media reported, when police officers shot up an army headquarters in a violent escalation of protests demanding better working conditions for police. Police officers exchanged gunfire with soldiers for hours after their protest halted near the national palace. It was unclear which side started firing first. Hundreds of supporters joined dozens of police officers, some in street clothes and others wearing police uniforms and face masks, as they advanced towards the palace in a protest demanding better pay. At least three police officers and one serviceman were wounded in the attack, which the defense ministry said was carried out by gunmen wearing masks. The situation remained tense as night fell. In one of many shocking videos circulating on Twitter, a recent clip of a doctor in Hunan that was widely shared by credible journalists covering the outbreak has caught our attention because it supports our theory - which has become increasingly widely adopted among the western press - that Chinese health officials are seriously undercounting the number of cases and deaths. 惊恐:湖南中医药大学第二附属医院的这位医生一天确诊50个冠状病毒患者,累到浑身湿透,没力气说话…… pic.twitter.com/kMh2Wl2Zl2 — 实话实说 (@jMcSVGx9oRuiEir) February 22, 2020 As the Washington Post wrote in a piece published earlier this week: "Chinese leaders and state media strike a coordinated note this week about the government’s ability to contain the outbreak, inconsistencies and sudden changes in official data are leaving experts — and journalists — struggling to plot meaningful trends, or even place any confidence in the figures coming from government." The WaPo reporters pointed to a clear case of manipulation where the authorities suppressed the true number of cases. Authorities in Hubei province reported good news Thursday: There were only 349 new coronavirus cases the previous day, the lowest tally in weeks. The bad - and puzzling - news? Wuhan, the capital of Hubei, reported 615 new cases all by itself. Hubei authorities have changed their criteria for counting cases three times over the past week or so. Hubei officials explained that they deducted cases that have not been confirmed through genetic tests from their total reported number of cases. Since this mistake was very, very public, we also reported on it.

Pew Research released some interesting statistics highlighting Latino voters’ views on national political problems based on a survey they conducted on Latino adults this past December. Record numbers of Latinos — 32 million — will be voting in the 2020 general election. This exceeds the number of eligible black voters for the first time in history. According to the results, the majority of Hispanic voters favor more government involvement on issues ranging from minimum wage to gun control. 62 percent of registered voters identify or lean toward the Democrat Party, whereas 34 percent connect with or lean in the direction of the Republican Party. Several key findings stood out: Most Hispanic voters (71%) say the government should do more to solve problems, while 27% say government is doing too many things better left to businesses and individuals. The findings by Jens Manuel Krogstad, Mark Hugo Lopez and Abby Budiman revealed that 82 percent of Hispanics who identify with or lean Democrat “say the government should do more to solve problems, compared with 51% of those who affiliate with or lean toward the GOP.”
