I'm thinking accident, but a question for AntiFederalist.
Those like me that play the percentages in trying to stack the deck as much as possible in my favor in the event SHTF, always would start the APU (a small gas turbine that can power a full size generator and also help pressurize the cabin) for takoff, approach, landing, and when we were in any sketchy situation such as weather or thinking about shutting down an engine.
The purpose of this is that if anything weird happens, a complete electrical backup will be available, either automatically.
Some personalities did not operate the APU in this manner because of laziness or constant suggestions from management to conserve fuel and lower cycles on the APU.
Can I assume that this same type of redundancy exists in the marine world and that cautious operators would have these up and running when electrical failure would be most costly?
