This whole process just reinforces how much politics and political journalism is just a circus. It's just about soundbites and drama that people feed off of for personal entertainment. Trump -- the reality TV star -- is a perfect representative for this system. The pro-State types hate him but he is the perfect embodiment of what it takes to make it to the top of the government apparatus.

Sadly according to one observer Pompeo is one of the lesser hawks in Trump's cabinet... which isn't saying much.

Some background. The PAYGO provision discussed below. Rand was consistent in saying he requested spending cuts along with the tax cuts and opposed the waiver for the spending cuts. My opinion -- that others may disagree with -- is that it's okay (but not ideal) to vote for a tax cut without a spending cut. The spending bill immediately after the tax law changes was stripped of the PAYGO provision and this is how Rand Paul (and Mike Lee) voted: "Only eight of 51 Senate Republicans voted against waiving budgetary discipline for the spending bill, and only two of those, Kentucky’s Rand Paul and Utah’s Mike Lee, voted against the bill’s final passage. Likewise, only 16 Republicans voted against the spending bill in the House, and several of those voted no not because the bill cancelled automatic spending reductions, but because the bill didn’t spend enough on federal defense programs." https://thefederalist.com/2018/01/03/waiving-tax-cut-pay-proves-parties-still-addicted-federal-spending/

If this appointment happens I'm very pessimistic that the US won't be in a war with Iran. Sure Trump could completely ignore the Director of National Intelligence but they will leak their stovepiped "intelligence" to neocon outlets (remember Tenet/Bush/Iraq) and Trump will be painted to look weak which his ego cannot stand and they will take advantage of that like they are for the Iran deal. This is a litmus test for me. If he gets in I might consider just give up paying attention to politics and just invest in oil to take advantage of the spikes that will happen during the war. Fleitz appointment is a strong "Buy" signal. He's part of the "shadow cabinet" that Bolton takes with him everywhere he goes that I posted an article about. Disgusting. What Appointing Fleitz as DNI Would Mean

Polls with "Registered Voters" vs ones with "Likely Voters" almost always slant Democratic. There are more registered Democrats than Republicans and not all registered voters actually vote. That's usually 3 to 5 points of the gap right there: https://fivethirtyeight.com/features/registered-voter-polls-will-usually-overrate-democrats/ In general it's still early and most of the conversation is "Trump is awful here's how it can be better" during the Democratic debates. No real airtime from Trump other than Twitter and a few interviews by left-wing media. Love it or hate it the poll results are not very predictive at this point. If anything they indicate re-election versus previous incumbents: Two years in, Trump's re-elect ratings are quite similar to predecessors who won second terms

First let me preface this by expressing my genuine belief that I have no antisemitic feelings and disapprove of anyone who does. I think those who oppose interference in our domestic politics due to antisemitism do the movement for non-intervention an objective disservice. Please refrain from any such comments on this thread! I post this because it's important that people realize the method and extent that a lobby -- even a foreign nation -- can involve itself in our politics so that we can learn about the tactics and oppose --or even apply-- them ourselves. The Chinese, Russian, Iranian, Saudi, Arab etc governments do the same thing. As well as unions, corporations, other special interests. Almost every nation's government tries to influence the world's greatest power in ways that are favorable to them. The stakes are higher because of our complex military entanglement in the Middle East for many other reasons that have nothing to do with Israel. It's just that Israel in this latest Iran (whose regime is disgusting it should be noted) crisis is one foreign government (Saudi Arabia and the Gulf Arab countries are others) that has a large interest in our active forceful opposition to Iranian influence. I personally think the military industrial complex lobby uses Israel, Ukraine, Korea, other hotspots, etc more than the other way around.

Ever since news came out that Rand Paul and Trump were working together to negotiate a deal for a non nuclear Iran. Levin has been on the attack. Not sure this is the most effective approach but a least it's one. Might be fun if it boosts visibility on Mark Levin's own twitter lol. Please like if you are so inclined. That said if you use your real name there is evidence (See video in tweet) that the Israeli government and/or its supporters will target your private life to stifle dissent. Such BS. First statement should have been in big capital letters "RAND PAUL WANTS A VOTE ON LEGISLATION" and that he absolutely was not "blocking" the bill. You know being a -- gasp-- Senator that votes on legislation. Not even a single person from Rand's side on the panel. Cavuto tried but he was stuck being moderator with no counterpoint. Also one -Rubin-- is a progressive activist. The other two while nominally Republican are a local politician the other attached to the Trump political campaign. In other words political hacks. Both of which have obvious incentives to not say or do anything unpopular.

I mean it's great that we're hearing about this but I'm guessing this was leaked by our political opponents. I think if it were Rand's choice he would have preferred to get some traction before any announcement. Same with Trump which is probably why he's flip flopping: It wasn't supposed to be leaked and was an exploratory effort and maybe he didn't want anything official just yet. The only people there where Rand Paul made the offer to act as a go-between with Iran were: Rand, Trump, Lindsey Graham, and David Perdue. Any guess who'd have the most motivation to leak this? Whose allies in the media left and right would be the first to discredit the effort? Take a guess! 1151535916412014593 My theory: Graham leaked it so his allies (Levin, etc) could savage Rand and Trump for it and the visibility would get Rand and/or Trump to back out because they would "seem weak" if they negotiated.

Nice article: https://spectator.us/mark-levin-war-first-rand-paul/ Like this quote that Levin said about Trump: "Paul’s ‘not dovish, he’s a Code Pink ideologue,’ Levin derisively claimed. In 2016, Levin said after a Republican primary debate in which the poll-leading candidate at the time blasted the Iraq War, ‘To have the leading Republican nominee for president of the United States to make these statements, and he’s been praised by Code Pink. He should be praised by Code Pink and every kook organization out there and every left-wing kook organization that hates America.’ Levin was talking about Donald Trump."

Videos up: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCTFA0FGIf6R1f_inJm9NJhA/videos Only watched the first 4 that were uploaded so far (Thiel/Carlson/Bolton/Hawley). Some some straw-men were set up but only mildly objectionable -- so far-- and no concrete policy suggestions I can see. Thiel got a pretty good round of applause that was organic (unlike Bolton) when he briefly touched on foreign policy.

Discussion from other thread... probably could have been put in General Politics but not sure how strict the mods are... this is pretty big news imo: enhanced_deficit Keeping in view the golden 'follow the money' rule, be careful what you wish for ; if this materializes, he could end up being emissary of notorious Iran war championing neocon Adelson who is top donor of GOP-MAGA/Neocon-Lite wing. MAGA is supposed to be more gutsy than Rand and even he escalated purposeless and wasteful war in Afghanistan, recently bombed Syria ( reportedly on Ivanka's advice) and has currently put up harsh sanctions and military buildup around Iran that carries risk of accidental war spark even if neocons still feel being deterred by America's wars fatigue. Does Rand have what it takes to to stand up to billionaire Adelson or even Ivanka? Assuming ,ofcourse , that above report is non-fakenews.

The kingdom deserved candidate Trump’s scorn. It is a corrupt totalitarian state, long tied financially to terrorists, yet it treats U.S. soldiers as the personal bodyguards of the royals. Former Defense Secretary Robert Gates recalled meeting King Abdullah, “He wanted a full-scale attack on Iranian military targets, not just the nuclear sites.” This supposed friend of America “was asking the United States to send its sons and daughters into a war with Iran in order to protect the Saudi position in the Gulf and the region, as if we were mercenaries.” From Riyadh’s viewpoint, of course, that is precisely what Americans are. https://www.cato.org/publications/commentary/trump-administration-should-balance-iran-saudi-arabia

If something happens I hope Rand will have enough ability when he's 100 to get the message out "Your Social Security is slashed by because politicians decided to prioritize junk like this for decades: " The federal government wasted Americans’ tax dollars as it… Bought an elementary school gym scoreboard at a 491% markup (BIA) ..... $13,000  Sent international students to college for free (State) ............................... $15,825,000 

#3 on Twitter... was #2: Sigh. It's such an uphill battle. If there is a financial crisis where we actually might have issues paying for the basics or a destabilized society no one will give a crap because it will seem like it came out of nowhere and the ones that voted for it long gone. People like Rand look cruel but what happens when people are thrown out on the street in addition to not compensating 9/11 victims because politicians wanted to borrow for bull$hit like this: Update: Snipped image not showing up for some reason. Here the link.

I think we have a convergence of liberal interests and neoconservative ones on this. This might just be the beginning of a longer campaign. I am worried the Dems will try to return the favor of what Trump pulled with AOC + 3 and try to make Rand the face of the GOP which liberals will love and the neocons will get their friends in the right wing media to help. Hopefully this is just an isolated incident for now.

Eric Garner, Mohamed Bouazizi, and the tyranny of petty laws

by Libertea Party on 12-05-2014 at 01:43 AM
There are parallels with Mohamed Bouazizi tragedy in Tunisia that launched the Arab Spring revolution and the Eric Garner outrage. What you have is the state's ability to be recklessly violent becoming exposed and directed toward the most marginalized of populations. Whether it's unevenness in drug laws or other petty social/economic regulations... these nonviolent "crimes" often wind up ensnaring powerless minorities Minority in the sense of social/economic not necessarily racial. The REAL reason the media hates Ron Paul and liberty.

by Libertea Party on 12-28-2011 at 07:10 PM
It's funny watching the flowering relationship between many in the media and Rick Santorum. You see those two will start fighting again but it will merely be a lover's quarrel. The real hate from the media is reserved for those who love liberty and oppose big government.

To be employed in political journalism you take for granted that the government has a role in civil society beyond as a mere functionary defending person and property. In fact a journalist takes great pride in "being
