Civil War - Sound And Fury, Signifying Nothing https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r-M-fSvtQxk {The Critical Drinker | 15 April 2024} Well, talk about disappointment. I'd hoped Alex Garland's new thriller would have given us a gripping story filled with interesting characters, but instead what we got was a bland, empty collection of scenes with no strong story to tie them together. What a wasted opportunity.

'Rust' armorer sentenced to 18 months in prison for involuntary manslaughter conviction https://www.usatoday.com/story/entertainment/celebrities/2024/04/15/rust-armorer-hannah-gutierrez-reed-sentenced-alec-baldwin/73325809007/ {Taijuan Moorman | 15 April 2024} "Rust" armorer Hannah Gutierrez-Reed has been sentenced to 18 months in prison after being found guilty of involuntary manslaughter last month in the 2021 shooting death of Halyna Hutchins. Though Alec Baldwin, 66, pulled the trigger, a jury found Gutierrez-Reed had erroneously loaded a live round into a revolver he was using on the Santa Fe, New Mexico, movie set. Judge Mary Marlowe Sommer addressed phone calls Gutierrez-Reed made from jail, citing comments she made to family and friends as evidence she had failed to take accountability.

The aft pressure bulkhead is kind of important ... The Worst Single Aircraft Disaster In History https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lUzAmkp7iQw&t=15s {Mayday: Air Disaster | 13 August 2021} August 12, 1985 - It was supposed to be a brief flight from Tokyo's Haneda Airport to Osaka for the 509 passengers on board the Boeing 747. Five minutes after taking off, the flight crew report that the plane's in distress. The plane had suffered a failure of its rear pressure bulkhead at the back of the cabin. The pilots could no longer operate the flying controls and worse, the plane is plunging up and down. For 30 minutes, the seasoned pilots struggled to tame the runaway jet and shortly after, the plane ploughed into the slopes of Mt. Osutaka, not far from Tokyo. All but 4 passengers are killed making it the worst air disaster involving a single aircraft in the history of commercial aviation.

Murrow of YouTube punditry, the lovely Ana Kasparian, executive producer and co-host of the long-running political commentary show The Young Turks. Ana guides us through the old and new media landscapes and shares the alarming experience at the root of her heterodox awakening. The girls/women share their frustrations with the Left (a first!) and wonder whether friendships discourage intellectual honesty (except the one with their new bestie Ana of course!!!). Finally, the hosts receive some tips on improving their grift.

"One screen, two many movies." It all depends on what narrative "filters" one adopts. And such "filters" are not objectively provable. They are the presuppositions that make subsequent "proofs" possible.

Elections actually are "quaint mechanisms that we can't trust" - even when they are entirely "on the level". As Gideon Tucker famously wrote, "No man's life, liberty or property are safe while the Legislature is in session" - nor while the polls are open, I would add. (Alexis de Tocqueville had a good deal more to say on the matter, as well.) Whether it's "too adult" a thing to expect or not, it's certainly too much of a thing to expect. In any case, Kennedy has too much unlibertarian baggage to be anything but just another "lesser evil". However, I will gladly leave it to others to parse out to their own satisfaction which of the available evils is less than the rest. It doesn't really matter, because Anti Federalist is right: we aren't voting our way out of this - and neither Trump nor Kennedy nor anyone else is coming to save us. (If there is anything "too adult" to expect enough people to understand, I dare say it is that.)

I'll apologize in advance for the length of this note, and for it being the first way so many of you hear from me on more substantive issues. Thanks for bearing with me, as there's a lot that should be said. I joined this organization because public media is essential for an informed public. At its best, our work can help shape and illuminate the very sense of what it means to have a shared public identity as fellow Americans in this sprawling and enduringly complex nation.

Should NPR rely on listeners rather than taxpayers like you? https://thehill.com/opinion/finance/4591396-should-npr-rely-on-listeners-rather-than-taxpayers-like-you/ {Jonathan Turley | 13 April 2024} It has been a rough week for the National Public Radio (NPR) after a respected editor, Uri Berliner, wrote a scathing account of the political bias at the media outlet this post - OB]. Although NPR responded this post - OB] by denying the allegations, the controversy has rekindled the debate over the danger of the government selectively funding media outlets. That is a debate that does not simply turn on the question of bias, but more fundamentally on why the public should support this particular media company to the exclusion of others. The Biden administration and Congress continue to struggle with a massive budget deficit and growing national debt, which stands at $34 trillion debt and is approximately 99 percent of Gross Domestic Product.

NPR defends its journalism after senior editor says it has lost the public's trust https://www.npr.org/2024/04/09/1243755769/npr-journalist-uri-berliner-trust-diversity {David Folkenflik | 10 April 2024} NPR's top news executive defended its journalism and its commitment to reflecting a diverse array of views on Tuesday after a senior NPR editor wrote a broad critique of how the network has covered some of the most important stories of the age. "An open-minded spirit no longer exists within NPR, and now, predictably, we don't have an audience that reflects America," writes Uri Berliner. A strategic emphasis on diversity and inclusion on the basis of race, ethnicity and sexual orientation, promoted by NPR's former CEO, John Lansing, has fed "the absence of viewpoint diversity," Berliner writes.

NPR Editor Blasts the Public-Funded Company for Political Bias and Activism https://jonathanturley.org/2024/04/10/npr-editor-blasts-the-public-funded-company-for-political-bias-and-activism/ {Jonathan Turley | 10 April 2024} In a scathing account from within National Public Radio (NPR), Senior Editor Uri Berliner blasted the company for open political bias and activism. Berliner, who says that he is liberal politically, wrote about how NPR went from a left-leaning media outlet to a virtual Democratic operation echoing narratives from figures like Rep. Adam Schiff (D., Cal.). The objections have long been voiced, including on this blog, but this account is coming from a long-standing and respected editor from within the company. Beliner details how NPR, like many media outlets, became openly activist after the election of Donald Trump to the point that the company now employs 87 registered Democrats in editorial positions but not a single Republican in its Washington, DC, headquarters. In his essay for The Free Press, this post - OB] Berliner notes that after Trump’s election in 2016, the most notable change was shutting down any skepticism or even curiosity about the truth of Democratic talking points in scandals like Russiagate. Berliner said that NPR “hitched our wagon” to Schiff and his now debunked claims.

Missouri House committee passes anti-squatters bill https://www.missourinet.com/2024/04/12/missouri-house-committee-passes-anti-squatters-bill/ {Marshall Griffin | 12 April 2024} A Missouri House committee has passed legislation designed to crack down on people illegally occupying homes and other residential properties. The so-called “squatters” bill would elevate first-degree trespassing to a Class E felony in cases where someone intentionally enters a residential property and refuses to leave despite being forbidden to enter by the owner. It would also be a Class E felony if a trespasser refuses to leave after being asked to leave by a law enforcement officer. And a law officer could not be held liable in a civil lawsuit for enforcing the law “in good faith.” A Class E felony in Missouri is punishable by up to four years in prison or one year in a county jail, although probation is also possible. A fine of up to $10,000 is possible as well.

I'm disappointed WRT your comment in my rep. I didn't know that about Rand. Disappointing. One more reason for me not to be thrilled, I guess. What would Rand's proposal accomplish? I mean, if security procedures were left up to the individual airport that might be a significant improvement (although I think even better would be to leave it to the airlines) but as long as DHS is running it, how is that helping anything?

I wish I could ask Rand Paul that question. I do really want to know what he's thinking.
