I'm planning on looking into that and then listing specific spending cuts on my campaign website. There's some higher up guys in Kansas who work at various conservative and libertarian think tank organizations that I was going to consult about that.

Yeah, or propose a bill defunding the Supreme Court until they stop forcing the legislature to increase education spending by specific amounts.

In Kansas the Kansas Supreme Court consistently forces the Kansas legislature to spend more money on education. It's a battle to simply slow the rate of growth of education spending in our state. It's never cut. It's impossible to cut it when the Kansas Supreme Court forces the legislature to increase education spending by large amounts.

I think I would mostly focus on getting rid of waste within public schools and doing things more efficiently. Because I can see quite a bit of waste that goes on within the public school in my town.

If I decide to run, I was planning on putting on my website that I support preserving religious liberty for people of all faiths. Also, it's hard to run for office as a hardcore libertarian and actually win. If you think you can do it, then you should try. In some ways my district is the exact opposite of libertarian. My district is culturally conservative but strongly supports things like public schools. So my views will have to be watered down to some extent to have any chance to win, just like the campaigns that Rand Paul ran. I'm just trying to be honest with you. I just posted this thread to try to gauge support for my campaign if I choose to run, but you may not want to donate money to my campaign if you expect me to run as a hardcore libertarian. That isn't really politically possible. My platform will be similar to what I posted in post #9, sort of mainstream libertarianism or conservative libertarianism but not what people in my district would consider to be "extreme positions."

Yeah, I understand in theory that a restaurant owner should have the right to refuse service to anyone he wants to for any reason. But, I live in a religious area, so it's beneficial politically to frame the issue by using the term religious liberty.

I support it. I imagine that's an issue that divides libertarians.

I don't think that a bakery owner should be forced by law to bake a cake for a same sex wedding.

I'm opposed to all tax increases and fee increases, opposed to all restrictions on gun ownership, support cutting spending, support reducing regulations, support preserving religious liberty, would push for ending civil asset forfeiture, would push for ending no knock raids of people's homes, would push for legalizing hemp and medical marijuana, etc.

I'm just posting a poll to try to gauge people's support if I were to run for state representative. I live in Kansas where they just passed a massive 1.2 billion tax increase. My representative is a liberal Republican who voted for that tax increase. He and all of the other big government Republicans in Kansas need to be replaced in the next election. I know that in the past people on this forum have had plenty of disagreements with me, and I'm seen as one of the more "moderate" members of the forum. But, I just thought I would ask anyway and see if anyone would be willing to donate money to my campaign for state representative if I choose to run. (Even if it's only a small amount)

This *might* be OK if you don't give them the impression that their prayers are acceptable to God, or that you see them as saved. I think its better to just pray for them personally.

We can't judge infallibly, and its possible that all the evidence is wrong, and that he truly is. I'm willing to grant this. But James 2 talks about works as evidence for justification, and that if a man does not have works he evidences himself to be not justified. Trump has the "works" of being affiliated with a liberal PCUSA, degrading comments about women, making essentially a mockery of holy communion, saying he doesn't ask for forgiveness at all, etc. I mean, what visible evidence is there that Trump is a Christian? We will know them by their fruit.

NOT agreeing with the NAACP. Praying for and praying with aren't the same thing. Praying with Trump, as if he is a true believer, might be questionable.

I'm considering running for the state legislature. I live in Kansas where we just passed the largest tax increase in state history. My Republican legislator has voted for tax increases, spending increases, expanding Obamacare, expanding gun free zones, keeping Common Core, etc. He's essentially a liberal Democrat masquerading as a Republican. I've known him my entire life as well. We even attend the same church. He's a nice guy, but politically I couldn't disagree with him more. In the coming months I might ask people whether they would be willing to support me in my campaign if I choose to run. I know in the past I've been considered one of the more "moderate" members of this forum, and I've had my fair share of disagreements with people here. So I'm not sure how much support I would get. But I might bring it up in the coming months and see whether I could get people here to support me or not. My state legislator has raised a ton of money from the teacher's unions and would be tough to beat, so I would have to raise a bunch of money to be competitive with him.

He's probably talking about Paul Curtman, a state lawmaker from Missouri. http://www.stltoday.com/news/local/govt-and-politics/gop-state-lawmaker-planning-bid-for-mccaskill-seat/article_e5c11d10-46a1-5074-adae-a9b70d2f0df4.html?utm_medium=social&utm_source=facebook&utm_campaign=user-share

I'm a fan of Peterson. He's certainly a much stronger libertarian than Gary "bake my damn cake" Johnson. As others have said though, perhaps he would have a better chance to get elected to a political office if he started out lower.

I'm personally not a fan of Kate's law at all. I don't have a problem with deporting illegal immigrants, particularly if they have a criminal record like the illegal immigrant who killed Kate Steinle. But, putting them in prison for five years will just expand our already large federal prison population and cost taxpayers a lot of money. We have too many people in prison as it is, and we need to go in the direction of enacting criminal justice reform and reducing the number of people in our prisons. Kate's law would take us in the wrong direction and significantly expand the federal prison population.

Regarding the whole "only the radical libertarians" will enter the gate, a similar thing was brought up at Eric Peters Autos:

"David" is my username. Moleman is coming close to arguing the position that only libertarians are Christians.

    Just an FYI:

    1. My answer to my own poll question is probably "yes", though its an exceedingly reluctant "yes."

    2. The more reluctant someone is, the less quick I'm going to be to judge them. You, frankly, are not the type of person I was considering when I made my OP, even if you techncially qualify. You're against legal torture and you agree that its almost always wrong. There are a lot of people who support legal torture and who think at least some of what was in the Senate Report was morally permissible (At least at my school there are, admittedly, my school is pretty "conservative"). I much more had in mind the neoconservative who says "torture is always justified against terrorists if there's a chance to save even one life" than I am a generally peaceful person that reluctantly says they could justify torturing someone if it meant saving their family, or something like that.

OK, so in that situation you're almost dealing with Hiroshima and Nagisaki again (not as it actually occured, but what most people think of it as.) Fair enough...

Still distressing.... I'm not sure what that says of those people who actually think these were all ticking time bomb situations.

Do you think it would ever be moral to let someone die of hypothermia in a cold cell? Do you ever think it would ever be moral to break someone's legs and force them to stand for hours or days? Do you ever think it would be moral to consecutively waterboard someone 183 times?

Is your only issue with this the potential for abuse, or do you understand that there is something deeply immoral about this?

There's something sickening and inhumane about about what was described in the CIA report. Killing someone in self-defense when they are trying to shoot you isn't comparable to that.
  7. View Conversation
Sorta, but there are plenty of people here who think it should be legal. So, where's the line where the form of torture becomes inhumane no matter what?
  8. View Conversation
TC, I apologize for the neg rep. I was in a really bad mood today, both from seeing the CIA report and seeing people here at school defend it. I took it out on you. I deserved the neg rep you threw back. Sorry...

The same one you said you'd never be extreme enough in. The one about police.
