It’s one of my faves too. I rewatch it every now and then when I’m feeling nostalgic for the 70s.

Hell, yeah! I loved that show. Kolchak was a great character. It's a damn shame it only got one season and so few episodes.

Civil War - Sound And Fury, Signifying Nothing https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r-M-fSvtQxk {The Critical Drinker | 15 April 2024} Well, talk about disappointment. I'd hoped Alex Garland's new thriller would have given us a gripping story filled with interesting characters, but instead what we got was a bland, empty collection of scenes with no strong story to tie them together. What a wasted opportunity.

Though Alec Baldwin, 66, pulled the trigger, a jury found Gutierrez-Reed had erroneously loaded a live round into a revolver he was using on the Santa Fe, New Mexico, movie set. Judge Mary Marlowe Sommer addressed phone calls Gutierrez-Reed made from jail, citing comments she made to family and friends as evidence she had failed to take accountability.

The aft pressure bulkhead is kind of important ... The Worst Single Aircraft Disaster In History https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lUzAmkp7iQw&t=15s {Mayday: Air Disaster | 13 August 2021} August 12, 1985 - It was supposed to be a brief flight from Tokyo's Haneda Airport to Osaka for the 509 passengers on board the Boeing 747. Five minutes after taking off, the flight crew report that the plane's in distress. The plane had suffered a failure of its rear pressure bulkhead at the back of the cabin. The pilots could no longer operate the flying controls and worse, the plane is plunging up and down. For 30 minutes, the seasoned pilots struggled to tame the runaway jet and shortly after, the plane ploughed into the slopes of Mt. Osutaka, not far from Tokyo. All but 4 passengers are killed making it the worst air disaster involving a single aircraft in the history of commercial aviation.

Elections actually are "quaint mechanisms that we can't trust" - even when they are entirely "on the level". As Gideon Tucker famously wrote, "No man's life, liberty or property are safe while the Legislature is in session" - nor while the polls are open, I would add. (Alexis de Tocqueville had a good deal more to say on the matter, as well.) Whether it's "too adult" a thing to expect or not, it's certainly too much of a thing to expect. In any case, Kennedy has too much unlibertarian baggage to be anything but just another "lesser evil". However, I will gladly leave it to others to parse out to their own satisfaction which of the available evils is less than the rest. It doesn't really matter, because Anti Federalist is right: we aren't voting our way out of this - and neither Trump nor Kennedy nor anyone else is coming to save us. (If there is anything "too adult" to expect enough people to understand, I dare say it is that.)

I'll apologize in advance for the length of this note, and for it being the first way so many of you hear from me on more substantive issues. Thanks for bearing with me, as there's a lot that should be said. I joined this organization because public media is essential for an informed public. At its best, our work can help shape and illuminate the very sense of what it means to have a shared public identity as fellow Americans in this sprawling and enduringly complex nation.

Should NPR rely on listeners rather than taxpayers like you? https://thehill.com/opinion/finance/4591396-should-npr-rely-on-listeners-rather-than-taxpayers-like-you/ {Jonathan Turley | 13 April 2024} It has been a rough week for the National Public Radio (NPR) after a respected editor, Uri Berliner, wrote a scathing account of the political bias at the media outlet this post - OB]. Although NPR responded this post - OB] by denying the allegations, the controversy has rekindled the debate over the danger of the government selectively funding media outlets. That is a debate that does not simply turn on the question of bias, but more fundamentally on why the public should support this particular media company to the exclusion of others. The Biden administration and Congress continue to struggle with a massive budget deficit and growing national debt, which stands at $34 trillion debt and is approximately 99 percent of Gross Domestic Product.

It's true that government is not the State, but the common man thinks the two are the same, so I use them that way in casual conversation. Rothbard's definition of the State is nearly identical to Bourne's and Oppenheimer's, and I think they are all good ways to think about it and distinguish it from the government. The wikipedia page on Voluntaryism is pretty good IMHO. gtg for now, but feel free to keep this conversation going if you like. It's pretty interesting.

Voluntaryism maintains that participation in government can and should be entirely voluntary. This does not necessitate abolition of government(which anarchy requires), but a "perestroika" (restructuring) of government so that individuals can choose how they want to interact with government, if at all. The wikipedia summary is pretty good http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Voluntaryism and the Voluntaryist manifesto is a great read (though google can't seem to find it anymore). There are also back issues of the now-defunct "The Voluntaryist" newsletter published online on several sites. Is there an easy way to save pms to text files or something? I have to clean out my box, but I don't want to waste a lot of time if I don't have to.

Law Without Taxation

by Wesker1982 on 07-26-2012 at 02:25 PM
When most people are exposed to the idea of a society organized without taxation, they often jump to the conclusion that the services provided by government would no longer exist. After it is proposed that these services would still exist, but they would be provided by voluntary organizations, they assume only problems and chaos could ensue. Warlords, crooked arbitration, justice for only the rich… surely these are unavoidable consequences of a society without taxation!

These voluntarily

Taxation is Theft (a response to a few criticisms). Happy Theft Day!

by Wesker1982 on 04-17-2012 at 05:21 PM
Taxation is theft, purely and simply even though it is theft on a grand and colossal scale which no acknowledged criminals could hope to match. It is a compulsory seizure of the property of the State’s inhabitants, or subjects. – Murray Rothbard
Here are a few dictionary definitions of tax:

  1. a sum of money demanded by a government for its support or for specific facilities or services, levied upon incomes, property, sales, etc. (dictionary.com)
  2. a charge usually
