There was a time when in the years following the financial crisis, every Friday the FDIC would report of one or more small and not small banks failing, as their liabilities exceeded their assets, who were taken over by larger peers with a taxpayer subsidy to cover the capital shortfall. And while this weekly event, also known as "FDIC Failure Friday" has faded from the US, for now, it has made a grand appearance in China. China’s financial regulators said on Friday the country’s banking and insurance regulator and the central bank, will take control of the small, troubled inner Mongolia-based Baoshang Bank due to the serious credit risks it poses. The regulator’s control of Baoshang will last for a year starting on Friday, the People’s Bank of China (PBOC) and China Banking and Insurance Regulatory Commission (CBIRC) said on their websites. China Construction Bank (CCB) will be entrusted to handle the business operations of the small lender, based in the industrial city of Baotou, the statement said. Such a takeover by national authorities is extremely rare, and takes place amid gathering concerns among regulators and financial analysts about a renewed surge in bad debts... ... a record pace of corporate defaults, amounting to 39.2 billion yuan of domestic bond defaults in the first four months of the year, 3.4 times the total for the same period of 2018... ... and the deteriorating health of small-scale banks in rural areas and small cities as China’s economy slows and enormous debts come due. “It’s a rare move for the Chinese central government to take over a bank,” said Shujin Chen, an analyst with Huatai Securities.

A lot has happened since then-candidate Trump said he would label China a currency manipulator on 'day one' should he make it to the Oval Office. So far, at least, the pledge to hold Beijing accountable for manipulating its currency wouldn't fall into the 'promises kept' column. But that could soon change. Shortly after the Treasury Department delayed its biannual report on suspected currency manipulators - an ominous indication that the issue might resurface in trade talks after Beijing reportedly balked at a pledge to keep its currency stable - the Commerce Department on Thursday revealed that it's planning to propose a new rule that would allow it to impose anti-subsidy tariffs on imports from countries suspected of undervaluing their currency. The change would allow the Commerce Department to impose anti-dumping and countervailing duties on products believed to benefit from manipulated currencies. In effect, an artificially depressed currency would be treated as a government subsidy. Though China wasn't specifically named in the Department's announcement, it presence on the Treasury Department's manipulation 'watch list' - which also includes Japan, South Korea, India, Germany and Switzerland - means Chinese companies would be obvious targets. And just like that, Wilbur Ross has opened up another front in the US-China trade war - albeit one that could ensnare some of Washington's closest allies, Reuters reports. "This change puts foreign exporters on notice that the Department of Commerce can countervail currency subsidies that harm U.S. industries," Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross said in a statement. "Foreign nations would no longer be able to use currency policies to the disadvantage of American workers and businesses," he said. Any tariffs applied under the new policies would be distinct from Trump's punitive trade-war tariffs.

Maybe he's tired from signing all of those subpoenas. One day after Nancy Pelosi publicly questioned President Trump's mental health and suggested that his family should consider an 'intervention', Jerry Nadler - the chairman of the Judiciary Committee and point man for various Congressional investigations involving the president, staff from his 2016 campaign, and members of his administration - appeared to pass out during a press conference held by New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio. Footage shot by NBC New York shows de Blasio stopping a press conference at P.S. 199 in the Upper West Side of Manhattan to come to Nadler's aid, offering the Congressman water, and remarking that he appeared to be dehydrated. When de Blasio asked if he was okay, Nadler responded with a faint 'no'. A new border crossing between Iraq and Syria is under construction in an area controlled by Iran-affiliated militias, Fox News reports, citing satellite images revealing construction works at the Albukamal Al-Qaim border crossing. The news outlet also cited unnamed sources as saying Iran was behind the new crossing—the old one was destroyed during one of the many military clashes in both Syria and Iraq—and it aimed to use it as a smuggling channel to Jordan and the Mediterranean coast. “Without Syrian or Iraqi supervision, Iran and its allies would have an unprecedented advantage in transferring whatever they wish,” Fox News reported, quoting unnamed experts. The tightening grip of Washington on Tehran through economic sanctions was bound to cause Iran to look for ways to get its oil across borders, so in this sense, the news about a new border crossing is a hardly a surprise. Yet it has not been established who exactly is building the crossing despite the mention of Shiite militia controlling the region. These militias are active in more than one part of Iraq and were allies of the government in its war on the Islamic State. Missouri Gov. Mike Parson signed an abortion bill into law Friday, banning the procedure at eight weeks of pregnancy and asserting that the state is a “sanctuary of life.” By signing House Bill 126 today, we are sending a strong signal to the nation that, in Missouri, we stand for life, protect women’s health, and advocate for the unborn. All life has value and is worth protecting. 🔗https://t.co/pBMYZk0yuB pic.twitter.com/FUS1ncRndx — Governor Mike Parson (@GovParsonMO) May 24, 2019 The law – the Missouri Stands for the Unborn Act – is considered one of the most comprehensive pieces of pro-life legislation in the country. It makes an exception for a medical emergency but not for rape or incest. “By signing this bill today, we are sending a strong signal to the nation that, in Missouri, we stand for life, protect women’s health, and advocate for the unborn,” said the Republican governor. “All life has value and is worth protecting.” The law recognizes that “God is the author of life” and declares that Missouri “and all of its political subdivisions are a ‘sanctuary of life’ that protects pregnant women and their unborn children.” The law also prohibits an individual from performing or inducing an abortion on the basis of a prenatal diagnosis of potential for Down syndrome or because of the race or sex of the unborn child. Additionally, the law “contains an emergency clause that requires written notification of a parent or guardian by the custodial parent or guardian of consent for an abortion to be performed on a minor,” states the governor’s office. The law also “expands the definition of a pregnancy resource center for tax credit purposes to include facilities that provide assistance to families as well.”

Amid rising trade tensions and a tight labor market, U.S. businesses are hanging on to their employees and not laying off workers. Initial claims for state unemployment benefits dropped to 211,000, down 1,000 from the week prior and below expectations for 215,000. Jobless claims are a proxy for layoffs. When President Donald Trump began raising tariffs, critics said the import duties and retaliation would cost American workers jobs. Instead, unemployment has plunged to 50 year lows, jobless claims have remained low, job creation is much stronger than expected, and workforce participation has expanded. https://www.breitbart.com/economy/2019/05/23/jobless-claims-unexpectedly-drop-to-211000/

CTV of Vancouver reported that numerous flyers had been posted at a local park which read, “Many Muslims live in this area and dogs are considered filthy in Islam. Please keep your dogs on a leash and away from the Muslims who live in this community.” The city’s mayor was questioned about the signs by CTV and said they had not been issued by the city. However, he said “Whether they were produced by a well-meaning member of the Muslim community or by someone wanting to cause contention, the fact remains that there are current bylaws in place that enforce areas for dogs to be on leash, except in designated off-leash areas.” The Stream.com’s John Zmirak reports that, as growing numbers of Muslims immigrate to non-Muslim countries, there have been similar calls to accommodate their cultural aversion to dogs. Due to the proportionately larger Muslim populations living in European countries, many of these incidents have taken place over there. He cites a case in which a Dutch Muslim politician called for dogs to be banned in The Hague, one of the Netherlands biggest cities. Banned? According to the Gatestone Institute: In Spain, two Islamic groups based in Lérida — a city in the northeastern region of Catalonia where 29,000 Muslims now make up around 20% of the city’s total population — asked local officials to regulate the presence of dogs in public spaces so they do not “offend Muslims.” … Muslims said the presence of dogs in Lérida violates their religious freedom and their right to live according to Islamic principles. After their proposals were rejected by local politicians, an epidemic of dog-poisonings followed.

The Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs is facing a severe financial crisis that has almost completely paralysed the ministry’s diplomatic activity after the budget deficit reached 400 million shekels ($110.7 million), Israel Hayom reported today. The newspaper quoted sources in the ministry saying that the body’s political activity is almost completely suspended, and that many steps are being cancelled because of the budget deficit. Among these steps is the purchase of land for the Israeli Embassy in Cairo, which was cancelled because the ministry was unable to afford a plane ticket for official in charge of purchases. In addition, Israel’s Agency for International Development Cooperation at the ministry, which is responsible for relations with developing countries, has not completed any activity since the beginning of the year. Sources said that “no new sessions are being held, no delegations have been coming to the country, and there is a travel ban.” Israeli ambassadors, consuls and diplomats have not been participating in conferences and meetings because of the lack of necessary budgets for their travel, they added. “Not only can we not afford air travel, but sometimes we are invited to economic or business conferences and say that we cannot attend because of scheduling problems, because it is shameful to say that we do not have the money for a train ticket,” one Israeli consul to an Asian country explained. A senior official in the Israeli Foreign Ministry indicated that “countries worldwide are asking us to open representative offices in their territories; but, we are forced instead to close our already existing representative offices. Even the offices that continue to work are doing so despite a shortage of budgets and staff, which does not occur in any other foreign ministry in the world. How can Israel strengthen its international position if the authorities are reducing the resources dedicated to this purpose? The ministry is collapsing. After three or four years they will ask how we have lost our relation with a large number of countries. Things which are not done today will cause tremendous damage that we will pay for years from now.” https://www.middleeastmonitor.com/20190523-israel-foreign-ministry-on-verge-of-collapse/

The Swedish Government is trying to make certain runes from the runic alphabet, as well as some old Norse Scandinavian symbols illegal. Their official reason for banning the runes is that Nazis used some of them during the second world war, for example the Odal rune that means O and the Tyr/Tiwaz rune that means T. Reportedly, the Social Democratic Minister of Justice Morgan Johansson is behind the initiative. According to the proposal, Old Norse symbols and jewelry may also be banned as incitement to hatred. This includes Mjolnir, hammer of the Norse God Thor, the Valknut/Odin’s knot and the Vegvisir. However, runes are over 1200 years old and have absolutely nothing to do with Nazis. For many Swedes, the runes are a big part of their religion Asatru, and for some they just have a great historical meaning.

The tax collectors of the day collected more than the legal taxes and enriched themselves, Christ commanded them not to exact more than the legal taxes. He also said to render unto Caesar that which is Caesar's. Of course he commanded his Church leaders not to be worldly rulers, that wasn't their job. Christ refused the devil because he is already the rightful ruler of the nations and he will bring us his Kingdom NOT his anarchy.

Government must be paid for some way and if you don't have taxes then it becomes government by the rich which always turns into government for the rich. That wasn't about worldly government, it was about the church leaders. And it doesn't say that you shouldn't have a government or that you shouldn't have one paid for by taxes, it says it is wrong for leaders to abuse their power.

I like Baldwin but him endorsing Amash's twisting of the Constitution is a great disappointment. And as Jules already said there are pictures of the damage to the ships. (Not that that means Iran did it, it is likely a false flag op) And much as I am not satisfied with Trump's foreign policy he has been moving us towards bringing the troops home and he has not started any more shooting wars so if you are going to criticize his foreign policy (and feel free to do so) you have to give him credit for that.
