Once the bumpstock ban is overturned, they know they won't be able to do the same with other gun components that are actually useful. In fact, just having this one going back and forth in the courts has probably slowed down executive actions similar to this one.
I can't think of any other gun component besides the bumpstock that they want to ban that is completely useless, this is the best component to have go through the ringer as a test case, to ultimately be overturned.
Gun laws in this country are 100 times better overall than they were 30-40 years ago. So I'm not sure your frog boiling analogy is very sound.
The government as a whole is far more oppressive and egregious than they were 30-40 years ago in pretty much every single way, with the exception of gun laws.
