I've moved all the posts involving "War on Drugs" / "legalization" stuff to the following thread, as it is a better fit for the topic: Oregonians support ending drug decriminalization The moved posts start with this one.

It hasn't been "proven" in those cities because it hasn't been done in those cities. As I said earlier (and as Mark Thornton explains in the video I quoted in this post): You really can't "half-ass" this kind of thing like that and then expect anything but "half-assed" results. I would also add that those places didn't become shitholes because they "legalized" possession and consumption (but not production and distribution) - rather, they "legalized" possession and consumption (but not production and distribution) because they became shitholes (or as I put it ealier, because of "batshit insanity progressivism"). I don't disagree with any of this. But the State and it's prohibitions are not the source for that "infrastructure" you speak of - it is the destroyer of it. Forgive me for repeating this quote from an earlier post, but it bears repeating (this time with a different part emphasized):

There always have been and always will be booze hounds and drug addicts. The War on Drugs is no more "winnable" than the War on Booze was. The only thing it will accomplish is the enrichment of violent criminals and government bureaucrats. And the fact that government "safety" programs don't work any better than government "prohibition" programs should be a surprise to no one.

Bathtub gin wasn't deadly because it was gin. Some of it wasn't even gin at all. (The term "bathtub gin" was used to describe any illicitly produced booze that was cooked up in things like bathtubs - hence, "bathtub gin".) It was deadly because it was adulterated with other legally produced substances (such as formaldehyde) to increase its volume and/or potency. - just as (legally produced) fentanyl, in addition to being used directly as a drug itself, is often used to adulterate other drugs to increase their volume and/or potency (which are then consumed by unwitting users who don't even know it's there - something which would be much less likely to occur if the production and sale of drugs were fully legal and their producers and sellers could be held liable for such adulteration, just like alcohol producers are). From the article (bold emphasis added): And as I noted in your quote of me (bold emphasis added):

The fentanyl thing is not really much different from the poisonous "bathtub gin" problem that existed during alcohol prohibition. It's a problem that occurs because of prohibition, not because of "legalization". The problem with all these so-called "legalization" schemes is that they only "legalize" possession and consumption, but not production and distribution (which remain criminal). So the only producers, distributors, and sellers will be criminals who will (1) be prone to violence to protect their turf and profits, and (2) have no incentives to care about the quality or safety of their products. Notice that, unlike during alcohol prohibition, innocent (and even not-so-innocent) people are not being injured or killed during running gun battles between competing alcohol distributors (such as Anheuser-Busch and Miller Brewing Co.). Brewers and sellers don't need to peddle their wares on schoolyards, and those who peddle poisonous products can be held civilly and/or criminally liable to their victims. And this was all without having to coddle drunks (unlike what is going on in Portland and elsewhere with respect to drugs & addicts).

Portland's problem isn't the "legalization". Portland's problem is the irresponsible addict-coddling of batshit insanity progressivism. But if there are "illegal grows", then it isn't really legal, is it?

Why is ‘Libertarian’ Reason Unreasonably Smearing Argentina’s Javier Milei? https://ampamerica.com/nichols-why-is-libertarian-reason-unreasonably-smearing-argentinas-javier-milei/ {Brian Nichols | 28 March 2024} When I saw the recent hit piece by Antonella Marty, CEO of Sociedad Atlas at The Atlas Society, in Reason magazine attacking Argentina’s new president Javier Milei, I had to rub my eyes in disbelief. Could this really be coming from the CEO of a prominent libertarian think tank, published in a respected libertarian outlet ? The op-ed, which portrays Milei as an authoritarian populist, is so rife with distortions and unfounded allegations that it borders on intellectual malpractice. As a proud libertarian, I feel compelled to set the record straight and defend a man who is bravely trying to pull his country out of the abyss of socialism. Let’s start by examining the central claim of Marty’s piece – that Milei is not a “real” libertarian because of some of his policy decisions and rhetoric. But since when did the Atlas Society and Reason magazine, of all places, provide a platform for such blatant purity testing and gate-keeping? The reality is that governing is messy business, especially in a country as dysfunctional as Argentina. Milei has inherited an economic catastrophe marked by hyperinflation, stifling regulations, and unsustainable government spending. In this context, some deviations from libertarian orthodoxy are not only understandable, but necessary as transitional measures. https://twitter.com/Libertarium_arg/status/1763669774846824742 1763669774846824742

The following quote is from the "Javier Milei" thread. I've moved all the subsequent replies (starting with this one) to this thread, as it is a better fit for the topic: I hate all the War on Drugs bullshit, but South America (and Central America, and Mexico) is a god-forsaken basket-case of drug-cartel corruption and violence, so I'm not going to complain (too much) about whatever Bukele, Milei, et al. decide they have to do to mitigate it. The best thing that could be done for South America (and Central America, and Mexico) is for the rest of the world (especially the United States) to put an end to War on Drugs and legalize (or decriminalize, or whatever) it all. That would do far more to impoverish the cartels and drive them out of business than all the laws in the world. (So, of course, that's the one thing that won't happen - the CIA would never stand for it, among other reasons.)

For example, instead of just briefly mentioning a list of tax hikes or the seemingly pointless purchase of fighter jets - which are two of the more problematic items, IMO - they could have made an effort to determine if those actions were actually instigated by Milei himself, or whether they are things he had to accede to as part of his agreement with the coalition partners (Bullrich, Obaid, et al.) whose support he needed in order to win the election (and will continue needing in order to enact other policies). In either case, they are bad things and deserve to be criticized, but as I've pointed out several times in this thread, Milei is not the OmniGod of Argentina - he was always definitely going to have to enact at least some unlibertarian policies, regardless of whether he really wanted to or not (not possibly, not probably, but definitely). In assessing and judging Milei, it makes a difference whether he "wanted to" or "had to". Reason could have helpfully tried to sort that out, but instead they just went "bitch mode" . The nature of politics - and especially electoral politics - is that you can easily do that with anyone. If Ron Paul had become POTUS, Reason could have written exactly the same kind of article about him - "Oh, look, he appointed his less-than-honorable grandson-in-law Jesse Benton as his Chief of Staff! Nepotism!" - "Oh, look, those newsletters! Racism!" - "Oh, look, the military spent more money on planes! All that 'non-interventionism' stuff must have been bullshit, after all!" - and so on. I suspect this has much more to do with Reason's social libertinism vis-ŕ-vis Milei's social conservatism than it has to do with actual libertarian principles. (Hence, their complaints about "gender issues" and Milei being a "pro-lifer"). In the case of Milei (or Ron Paul), was that money offset by greater spending reductions elsewhere? Maybe. Maybe not. If not, was it by choice or political necessity? Who knows? Reason couldn't (or wouldn't) be bothered to try to find out and tell us.

They have a few - but unfortunately, instead of actually providing any substantive examination of those few points, they only mention those points in passing so they can spend the vast majority of the article indulging in innuendo and other nonsense like griping about his dogs (or bizarrely complaining that army officers can't get tattoos, paint their nails, or grow beards).

Libertarianism and "plumbline" conservatism are mutually exclusive. Conservatism has long been opposed to classical liberalism-the precursor to "plumbline" libertarianism.

Right there is where you find it! It seriously has saved me a lot of money and will pay itself off within a year. I use the washer, then spin "dry," and hang up to finish the drying. It's working great for where we're at right now, my bathroom has turned into the laundry room--much better than spending $$$ on laundromat nastiness. We also have a balcony where I can dry/grow herbs and some tomatoes. I'm making the best of what I've got.

If you are a young mother, you need to know, right now, that the advice that DonnaY gives is just horrible. She did not graduate from high school, and considers herself a researcher because she watches YouTube videos and reads conspiracy things. She posts these things because she apparently has a deep seated need to feel smarter than the rest of the world...painting herself as some wise sage in a world gone mad. In fact, she is delisional and dangerous.

that hosting a picture in a thread isn't this hard for everybody. But linking straight to it was a disaster in that it was HUGE - filled up the whole page on the laptop. I downloaded it and then tried to insert it from my desktop, but no luck.

So here it is: a picture of a humidifier (maybe) with absolutely no relevant text to go with it. If it's relevant text you want, go here.
