yeah, and popular mechanics had been predicting flying cars for 50 years. Science mags offer lots of future predictions, until it's actually done in a single country it's all hype.

Growing up in family run business I have a lot of respect for any entrepreneur. It's often times more of a pain in the ass than anyone not involved in one can imagine. This quarantine is bad. The government response to a pandemic was horrid. If the current shutdowns last for another month or longer, which it seems will happen, I see a lot of mom and pop places not surviving to reopen. The major corps pay no taxes, it's the middle class owned places carrying that burden, yet they won't be able to get easy loans to ride this through. The wonders of corporatism.

Actual free market would let some companies actually fold and have better run companies step in. It may be ugly short term yet in the long term the better company should make the entire market stronger. The downside is of course the average worker who gets shafted in a corporate closing, not having a golden parachute like execs.

I'll give her props for showing how the fed can just print money. The "Automatic BOOST to Communities Act" (pdf) would deliver a $2,000 pre-paid debit card to every American, with $1,000 being paid monthly after that until a year after the coronavirus crisis ends. Tlaib proposes to pay for the cost of the program by calling on the Treasury to use its authority under federal law to issue two trillion dollar platinum coins.

I wonder if we'll ever see an official reason on why the US ignored the WHO testing. Someone made a very deliberate decision to do something different than the rest of the world and it delayed our testing by weeks.

I've only seen mention of 2 strains, both detected in China from the onset. Are there actual confirmations of multiple strains? If so the vaccine is going to be that much harder to do.

By that logic the equator areas should be always fine, and south hemisphere should be getting worse now that it's their fall?

What about Loeffler (R-GA)? On Twitter she claims there is nothing to it as the stocks are managed by a 3rd party with no input from her. If so what an amazing coincidence. Burr is funny, he was one of 3 senators to vote against the STOCK act "The bill prohibits the use of non-public information for private profit, including insider trading by members of Congress and other government employees. It confirms changes to the Commodity Exchange Act, specifies reporting intervals for financial transactions"

A quick overview of Trump's statements on the virus since January. As we learned yesterday he's known it would be a pandemic from the start.

Do we need another image of the curve? With the infection rate and numbers of 19%+ requiring hospitalization we simply don't have the resources to treat that many patients. Slowing the spread so everyone doesn't get hit at once is the only solution to not have needless deaths. It does feel almost surreal with everything closing down, no one immediately sick, but know it's coming. Very much an "On the beach" style moment.

At the moment they're only doing a few thousand, they are working to scale things up. I just said I wouldn't be surprised if they used these tests to collect DNA, I'm not actually convinced yet that they are. However if there continue to be no answers on why the CDC decided to make their own tests it will only lead to more speculation. Obviously the most likely reason is simply someone was going to make a profit.

"That would at least give one reason why we can't put tests out there in any numbers after being given how to do this months ago." The WHO shared the coronavirus test with the world, for unknown reasons (as in the gov will not comment), the US decided not to use the WHO tests and decided to make their own. This delayed the start of testing by months. The CDC is still only doing a few thousand tests a day by their own numbers.

If COVID 19 does keep a 2 - 3% mortality rate, with 40 - 75% of the population catching it within a year, then there is real cause for concern. An additional 2 - 7 million dead is horrific. Everyone getting it at once and swamping hospitals could make those numbers even worse as Italy is showing. Closing everything down to try to lower the curve is not a bad idea. The thing that simply doesn't add up is why the US Government avoided using the WHO tests. They are refusing to answer that. Lots of possibilities - Trump didn't want tests so the numbers didn't look bad - someone is making money with creating tests - outright incompetence - Something sinister like if every american needs to be tested so why not also grab their DNA while at it?

I have seen some local utilities say they will not shut off utilities during the crisis which is fine until it is over, but it's not like people who have been unemployed are suddenly going to have funds to catch up. If this lasts for long there are going to be a huge number of very financially hurt people. When studies have shown that over half the country would have to go into debt to handle a $500 emergency, I think this counts as an emergency. Businesses will also be hurting. I can't imagine how much corned beef for St Patty day festivities is going to go to waste at every local bar.

Anything remotely good, it's all because of Trump. Anything remotely bad it's the dirty Dems, probably Obama. His loud proclamation that he is not responsible for the lackluster COVID 19 response summed up everything about Trump's leadership.

I wouldn't totally put it past the feds keeping all COVID tests for DNA samples. That would at least give one reason why we can't put tests out there in any numbers after being given how to do this months ago.

The argument that allowing fed money to pay for testing could be used for abortion is a stretch. I'm all for calling things out and of course things get hidden in bills all the time, yet I haven't seen an explanation on how this could happen. Since it passed the republicans must not be too concerned about that actually happening.

Think you're mixing up google with Facebook. In Q Tel did have some google stock when google bought the keyhole sat company which is now google earth. Google founders did work as graduate students with grants about identify users. If you want to put a tinfoil hat on for that go ahead, but they were not given money by either for starting. That would go to Bezos and other early tech people tossing money their way. At that time search was a competitive industry.

Trump himself has retweeted, which is an official method of communication now, statements that he should get an extra 2 years in office because of the 2 years the "witchhunt" had been ongoing. This may give him the chance to be the power hungry authoritarian he has always wanted to be.

Good comparison as I can't think of something to top that failure offhand. I have seen multiple news sources say they have requested a statement from the CDC on why the WHO tests were not used, are still not used, and have yet to get a response. This feels like a coverup over someone trying to make a profit.

We're still not testing many people Those symbols mean numbers aren't complete. Still only about 1k tests a day for a potential pandemic that the gov is saying will hit 40%+ doesn't seem very high. I did see news that cleveland clinic developed a test that can have results in hours instead of having to be sent to a special lab. Although that may be treated like the WHO test and just ignored.
