IIRC, courts have ruled that political parties are private organizations and can nominate (or exclude from nomination) whomever they please and by whatever means. I don't remember exactly who it was, but one of the more recent such cases involved a lawsuit filed against the Democrat (LOL) party by Bernie Sanders or RFK Jr. - or maybe it was Ralph Nader. (Or someone like that, anyway.)
