Either that, or a mediocre punk rock band will rise to prominence for a few years solely because they named themselves The Dead Trumps.

What if the federal government stopped doing the stuff it does and nobody--nobody--suffered but those in the federal government?

Yep. I've said from the beginning that he's a non-ideological megalomaniac that's been comb-over deep in the establishment for decades. He does whatever or says whatever he thinks people want to hear. He's driven primarily by his own psychopathy (NPD) and it benefits whomever is the last person to speak to him. Most of his supporters fell for that psychopathy. Perhaps a few thought they could use it to their advantage. Either way, it's a fools bet. All the good that he has done (and there have been several good things) has been undermined by the bad. Government still grows under his watch and liberty still wanes.

Yes. But say that in public and you'll find their fans can make even more excuses than Trump's fans can.

Trump is in George W. Bush territory. He read a poll that said Republican primary voters don't trust the media and he engineered his campaign accordingly. Trump is a player, and the world is teeming with people begging to be played.

"Oh please... Trump is a genius and he's playing them all! There's no way the establishment could control this guy! If he's putting in the deep state folks, it's all part of his master plan for liberty!" Lol - it's funny, really... They simultaneously believe that Trump is being manipulated when he does things they don't like and he's playing 24D chess when he does things they like. It's almost as if they were conned, or something, and they've invested so much into their own belief that they make every excuse to believe it wasn't so.

No, it's not. Unfortunately, they've ruined the game. I really like pro football, but this "entertainment ball" is horseshit. The great thing about the pros is that you had parity between the players and it really came down to coaching, schemes, and the mental aspects of the game. (College football is all about recruitment, sadly) But now, it's all about the zebras. What will they call and when? They own the game. And if a team disputes that, they "go to New York" and let the NFL settle it. The outcomes of games are rarely driven by the play of the teams, anymore. I admit I still watch. But in order to enjoy it, you have to let go of any semblance of fairness in the final scores or the records. It's like the WWE, these days. You can still see some smart play-calling and great individual efforts, but the end-result just feels scripted.

You figure repeating it will make it true? I remember when Zippy spelled words as the English do. I remember several times Zippy's prose style changed, and he developed amnesia. He couldn't remember what happened last week. I remember when one day he was waxing eloquently about the Broncos, and the next he forgot that the Seahawks had not been an AFC team for years. I don't refer to the Zippy account as 'they' because I think there's royalty involved. And repeating stuff that denies the evidence which has passed before my eyes will not make me believe that stuff is true.

And furthermore, with respect to my characterization of my comment in post #56 as being a "throwaway bit of snark", there's the fact that something being a "throwaway bit of snark" is not incompatible with that thing expressing something that is believed or believable. As I understand and use the term, "snark" is just wisecracking that is often ironic or sarcastic in nature. This does not in any way require that the substance underlying the form of the expression cannot be credible. And as for it being "throwaway", that was just a reference to the fact that my comment was a brief "one-liner" that had been made in passing without much if any elaboration.

*sigh* There is no single "it" here. You are conflating two distinct statements - one of which was made by you, not me ... In response to your criticism of me for "fixing" AF's statement, I characterized the statement I made in post #56 as a "throwaway bit of snark". The statement I said in post #60 that I believed is NOT the one I made in post #56. It is the one YOU composed and asked me about (prior to you presumptuously telling me that I didn't "really" believe it). If that is what you actually think (and unlike you, I will not presume to tell you that it is not), then you are simply wrong. I believe that the "trigger issue" in this story involves much more than just politics. You are free to disagree - but once again, please do not lecture me about what you presume to declare I "really" believe about the matter, despite that I have explicitly said otherwise. I have politely asked this of you twice now. I will not be polite if there is a third time.

I didn't expect them to, either, but I didn't expect them both to lose. The Saints were clearly and obviously screwed. The funny thing is the two bad calls in the Chiefs' favor before the bad call against them. I can't imagine why I would possibly bother to watch the Stupor Bowl. I've already seen everything the year's two best teams are going to do.

If they are defective, yes. But, of course, the FRN's defects don't hurt the government, only the civilians. So it never gets recalled, and we aren't allowed to sue. No matter how much middle class wages erode and savings evaporate.

Half a century later and they still seem to be screwing teams that were in the AFL. That's a ridiculously long time to hold a grudge. And despite instant replay, they still manage to pull it off. I hate the NFL.

Since when is the "We got a badass over here" meme "gay"? It's been all over the interwebz for many moons and it's used by all sorts of folks. There are several samples in the various "bestest picture thread evarrr"-s.
  8. The reason I have no use for monarchies is it's complete pot luck what you get. If your generation gets a Victoria, you could be in worse shape (assuming her advisors aren't lying to her about what they're doing), but if you get an Ivan the Terrible you're screwed. I prefer a system that at least holds out hope for nonviolent revolution, whether people are generally smart enough to use it or not.

And I'm pretty sure you meant neither Bismarck nor the kaiser.

    President von Hindenburg

That help get the rust out of your history? 'Cause those who get rusty on history are liable to re-live the bad parts...

You're right, I should have said the Kaiser, not Bismarck. :/ (My WWI history is rather rusty...I do remember Hitler suffered from mustard gas inhalation during that war and a bunch of other factoids) Yeah, monarchs have been somewhat fascist in certain occasions, but they always had incentive not to destroy their subjects' economy or their own respective societies as presidents and prime ministers or even legislators do. (such elected officials almost always leave office very wealthy and almost never face justice for their misdeeds) Generally speaking, the best to worst scale goes- voluntary association with government>hereditary monarchy>monarchy>classical republicanism>modern constitutionalism>democracy etc.

What has it to do with politics? Everything. Politicians piss us off, then try to misdirect our anger 'across the aisle' to people who are fundamentally exactly the same, but wear a different party label. The game is age old, but still works.

People are angry, but they are often in denial about it. They know they're angry, but they don't want to admit they're angry
