How not to get laid: But whenever I read the title of the song, I'm mostly reminded of the documentary series "The Power Of Nightmares". May have to watch it again.

Maybe it comes down to semantics, but I don't think so. Money buys you comfort and security, but I wouldn't say it buys you liberty. There's also the question of what constitutes "wealth". I draw comfort from knowing I can take a year or two and go sit on a beach in the Caribbean if I really want to, but I'm nowhere close to what I would consider "wealthy". Maybe people with real wealth enjoy a modicum of liberty, but I think it would take quite a lot of wealth for that to be the case. I think it's more about how only the nails that stick out get hammered down. If you're a steady source of income for your owners (you pay taxes), and you don't need anything from them (like welfare and such), they have no reason to bother you. Because who really cares if a structure on your property has a permit or not? No one, unless you start making waves. Think of yourself as a dairy cow. If you produce quite a bit of milk for your owner, and you don't kick or bite when you're being milked, you'll most likely be treated well.

Information has become more widely accessible over time, digital revolution and all that. Lies and corruption have been hallmarks of "elites" since forever, it's just become harder for them to control the information provided to people. If your only source of information is the state, of course you're going to believe the state. I acknowledge the need for some kind of governing body, call it a necessary evil, but what increased access to information has made clear to many is that only a fraction of what the governing body does is actually necessary - and that most of the resources it takes from people, as well as most of what it does, is simply meant to benefit the governing body itself.

Snow most definitely is racist. Only white snow is pure. Black snow is full of pollution and yellow snow know... Therefore we should strive to make snow more culturally sensitive. If we turn all snow into brown sludge, the world will surely be a better place.

Yeah, I was thinking the same thing. I remember buying Garbage Pail Kids packs as a kid. You got some gum and a couple of (supposedly) random cards, no one ever thought of it as "gambling". I don't really like where computer gaming has gone, with things like micro-transactions, pay-to-win and endless and expensive DLCs. Instead of releasing "complete" games, companies release half-finished games and make you pay them to get more content. You might argue that it can make the games better, since the game development goes on for a longer time, making games gradually more polished, but I mainly find it annoying and stick to older games and play the "vanilla" version. As far as "protecting children", that's on the parents. Giving a kid access to debit card information is about as dumb as letting them play with Semtex.

Nothing wrong with checking on the financial status of immigrants, unless you want to be flooded by parasites sucking off the public teat. But using US credit scores to do so is less than optimal, given that the best possible credit score you can have is 0.

As an argument, "because Bible" is beyond terrible. Maybe it's my Lutheran heritage, but I really try not to push "my" version of Christianity on others. Because it just doesn't make sense. As far as I'm concerned, religion is personal, and people pushing their (not God's, their) faith on others are dicks. Because claiming that you know God's will better than others - that your interpretation of scripture is correct - makes you an arrogant A-hole in my book. This guy invading the private space of these islanders is no different from some Jehovah's Witness breaking into your home and trying to force you into what in their mind is the "correct" religion. Thinking that you know what God wants means elevating yourself into the position of God. For some reason, if there is a Heaven, I don't think anyone who presumes - yes, presumes - to know God's will can ever make it there.

And also commanded to "do to others what you would have them do to you". Which I think would include not pestering people when your presence clearly isn't welcome. I'm more in the "Let's not presume to know what God wants you to do" school. Deus vult smacks a little too much of arrogance and self-importance IMO.

The guy did Darwin himself, and you have to be pretty self-absorbed to attempt what he did. These people are left alone for a reason, namely that they have made it very clear that they want to be left alone. If he had respected their wishes instead of putting his own wishes first, he wouldn't be dead.

It's sad how they stopped trying to make better cars, and instead started shoving as much electronics as possible into these things. I'll be so miffed when our 30-year-old Ford finally gives up the ghost. Very little electronics, meaning any mechanic can work on it, so it's dirt cheap to service and repair. And it's reliable as hell. We did the math a while back and figured that the car has cost us about $1,200 a year, and that includes everything - purchase price, gas, service costs, insurance, car tax, everything.

Jazz hands? Sounds like cultural appropriation to me. And what about amputees feeling left out?
