Because he hasn’t already done enough to become a parody of himself, John McCain favors U.S. military action against Boko Haram:

The United States should send in special forces to rescue the hundreds of girls kidnapped by Boko Haram—whether the Nigerian government gives permission or not [bold mine-DL], according to Sen. John McCain.
This would be a questionable thing to do even if Nigeria’s government requested direct U.S. involvement in a rescue attempt, but to be willing to send U.S. forces into another country without permission from a mostly cooperative government is unduly reckless even by McCain’s low standards.
    [...]
It will come as news to McCain, but most governments around the world would not be pleased to be shown up by a foreign power on their own soil without their permission. Whether the mission was a success or not, sending U.S. forces where they are not invited would have the potential to create significant resentment.
I didn't vote for him, but I feel compelled to apologize again on behalf of all Arizonans for re-electing that BSC! SOB. What is it going to take to send this dangerous clown packing?!

Scroll to the bottom of Glenn Greenwald's blistering response to recent remarks by just-retired NSA chief Keith Alexander, and you'll find some very interesting news indeed. Greenwald, who shared the Pulitzer Prize for his coverage of Edward Snowden's NSA surveillance revelations, says he plans to publish previously unpublished NSA documents online next Tuesday, May 13th, with free access. The timing, it should be known, is not a coincidence: Greenwald's book, No Place to Hide, comes out that day. In fact, the documents that going online next week are ones he mentions in the book, but which weren't previously reported in the press. So, if you were expecting the entire trove to go public (and even Snowden has advised against that), you might still be disappointed. But if you've been following this Edward Snowden-NSA-Big Brother saga closely and have an appetite for even more revelations, you'll want to mark your calendars (and pre-order Greenwald's book, if we're correctly reading between the lines).
(I am disappointed. Call Me "Irresponsible" -- Please)

Obama Directive Makes Mere Citing of Snowden Leaks Punishable Offense
Once promising the most transparent administration in history, White House reins in free speech of employees
    http://www.commondreams.org/headline/2014/05/09

In a new policy directive from the Obama administrative, national security and other government officials will no longer be allowed to publicly discuss or even reference news reporting that is based on "unauthorized leaks."

President Obama once promised the American people that his administration would be the most transparent in history, but after years of fights with civil libertarians trying to obtain legal memos used to justify the president's overseas assassination program, an unprecedented pattern of prosecuting government whistleblowers, the targeting of journalists, and all the secrecy and obfuscation related to the NSA's mass surviellance programs made public by Edward Snowden, that claim is now met with near universal laughter, if not scorn, by critics.

According to the New York Times:

A new pre-publication review policy for the Office of Director of National Intelligence says the agency’s current and former employees and contractors may not cite news reports based on leaks in their speeches, opinion articles, books, term papers or other unofficial writings.

Such officials “must not use sourcing that comes from known leaks, or unauthorized disclosures of sensitive information,” it says. “The use of such information in a publication can confirm the validity of an unauthorized disclosure and cause further harm to national security.”

Failure to comply “may result in the imposition of civil and administrative penalties, and may result in the loss of security clearances and accesses,” it says.
Timothy H. Edgar, a visiting professor at Brown University, told the Times the ODNI directive is overly restrictive because it goes beyond telling officials they cannot comment on or confirm the accuracy of unauthorized leaks—something he thinks makes sense and is already covered by statute—but it bizarrely asserts that these people cannot even acknowledge the existence of a story that may have appeared on the cover of a major newspaper.

In our busy days, it is all too easy to fall into the trap of hearing (and believing) the latest headline and its associated spin. For some reason, three minute videos can quickly and easily remove these 'spins' without the need for a PhD. And so we decided to dust off today's 3:06 un-spin clip, addressing the broken-window-fallacy as the seen versus unseen impact of the idiocy of a broken-window's (or war, or destroying homes, or...) positive impact on an economy is explained in cartoon style. The sad fact is that this fallacy remains at the core of mainstream policy-making and as the video notes, the government's 'creation' of jobs via public works programs (or any number of stimulus-driven ...

What also kills me is all the crowing over people paying their first premium. Will there be news reports every month now on the number of people paying their premiums? It's all just so ridiculous. The regime and its media are so desperate to spin this nightmare into a success, it's pathetic.

As rates (along with the cost of everything else) continue to rise, the number of premiums paid (insured) will drop.

Hillary Clinton: Gun Laws Are 'Way Out of Balance'
After avoiding the heated political issue for years, the former secretary of State says we need to "rein in" gun laws.
    http://www.nationaljournal.com/polit...lance-20140506

Hillary Clinton has mostly steered clear of contentious domestic political issues in recent years, but on Tuesday, she said gun laws need to be reined in.

Speaking at a National Council for Behavioral Health conference outside of Washington, Clinton was asked about the role guns play in suicides. While Clinton said she supports Second Amendment rights, she added that there needs to be a proper trade-off between safety and freedom, and that things have swung too far toward the latter.

"I think again we're way out of balance.
We've got to rein in what has become almost an article of faith that almost anybody can have a gun anywhere at any time. And I don't believe that is in the best interest of the vast majority of people," she said.
    [...]
The former first lady also seemed to take a shot at tea-party Republicans, though she did not mention them by name. "Don't vote for someone who proudly says they will never compromise," she told the audience. And "don't give them any money. Find someone in your party who's reasonable ... who's not going to Washington proudly to destroy what our founders built."
    LOL

In other words, more than two years before a general election, Hillary has announced that she is uncomfortable with Stand Your Ground and with expanded concealed carry — both of which are pretty popular with the public at large, and neither of which are being seriously debated outside of the progressive base.

So there was a split in the circuit court's decisions, and they declined to resolve it.

They must be waiting for team blue to load SCOTUS with some more gun-grabbers before they take any more 2nd amendment cases.

The U.S. Supreme Court has not heard a single Second Amendment case since issuing its landmark gun rights rulings in District of Columbia v. Heller (2008) and McDonald v. Chicago (2010).

Unfortunately for gun rights advocates, that silence went unbroken today. In a major announcement this morning, the Supreme Court refused to hear Drake v. Jerejian, a case challenging the constitutionality of New Jersey's arbitrary rules governing the right to carry handguns in public for purposes of self-defense.

The lawyer behind the case is Alan Gura, the civil rights litigator who previously argued and won both Heller and McDonald before the high court. In an interview with me last month, Gura explained his reasons for bringing the Drake case. "We've seen courts rubberstamp just about any kind of law that violates the Second Amendment," he said, describing the legal climate in the wake of Heller and McDonald. ...

I've been worrying about Walter Jones (especially after Our Lady of Guantanamo endorsed his warmonger opponent) and wondering if there's been any polling. Came across this:

Recent straw polls reflect a shift in the core of the GOP in the East
    http://www.beaufortobserver.net/Arti...-the-East.html
We recently received the following contribution from one of our outstanding readers. We have been reflecting on how to report it. The reason for the hesitation is that we don't believe "straw polls" or self-select polls such as those at Beaufort County Now and the WDN are meaningful because they are not based on a representative sample. Thus, our sense is that they are misleading to the average reader who does not know who is being polled. So read on with care.

GOP Senate candidate Dr. Greg Brannon handily won the straw poll among delegates and alternates attending the First Congressional District Republican convention held Saturday. Brannon took 53% of the vote, followed by Ted Alexander at 17%, Mark Harris at 16% and Thom Tillis at 14%.

This is Brannon's second major win among GOP delegates at a recent eastern congressional district Republican convention. On the preceding weekend, Brannon won the Third Congressional District Republican convention straw poll with 59% of the vote, followed by Thom Tillis at 24%, and others at 17%. Congressman Walter Jones also handily won that straw poll over Taylor Griffin.

Story link Alleged racist Cliven Bundy, seen here dropping everything to play with a little brown child.
As any reasonably well-informed attorney knows, if a police officer follows a driver long enough he will witness a violation that supposedly justifies a traffic stop. Once this happens, the officer will “build the stop” by seeking a pretext to search the vehicle for evidence of violations that can lead to an arrest of the driver, or seizure of the vehicle and its contents.

Cliven Bundy, among others, can testify that Regime-oriented journalism operates in a very similar fashion: Have a reporter from the New York Times shadow a 67-year-old Mormon rancher from southeastern Nevada long enough, and eventually the subject will say something that offends current ...

Judge says ordinary tools actually are 'weapons'
Affirms punishment against teacher who brought wrenches for visual aid
    http://www.wnd.com/2014/04/judge-say...vdSubCe0QqL.99

Ordinary tools, such as pliers, screwdrivers and wrenches, are “weapons” and so a Chicago school was correct to punish a teacher who brought them to class for a visual aid, according to a new court decision.

The ruling from a federal court in Illinois technically dismissed a lawsuit brought on behalf of teacher Douglas Bartlett. He had been suspended without pay for four days “on the grounds that his use of the tools as visual aids endangered his students, despite the fact that all potentially hazardous items were kept out of the students’ reach.”

WND reported a year ago when the case was filed – and the school’s actions were called political correctness run amok.

At the time, John Whitehead, of the Rutherford Institute, which brought the case on behalf of Bartlett, said, “Education truly suffers when school administrators exhibit such poor judgment and common sense, especially when it comes to their zealous misapplication of misguided zero tolerance policies.

Those tempted to write off the standoff at the Bundy Ranch as little more than a show of force by militia-minded citizens would do well to reconsider their easy dismissal of this brewing rebellion. This goes far beyond concerns about grazing rights or the tension between the state and the federal government.

Few conflicts are ever black and white, and the Bundy situation, with its abundance of gray areas, is no exception. Yet the question is not whether Cliven Bundy and his supporters are domestic terrorists, as Harry Reid claims, or patriots, or something in between. Nor is it a question of whether the Nevada rancher is illegally grazing his cattle on federal land or whether that land should rightfully belong to the government. Nor is it even a question of who’s winning the showdown— the government with its arsenal of SWAT teams, firepower and assault vehicles, or Bundy’s militia supporters with their assortment of weapons—because if such altercations end in bloodshed, everyone loses.

What we’re really faced with, and what we’ll see more of before long, is a growing dissatisfaction with the government and its heavy-handed tactics by people who are tired of being used and abused and are ready to say “enough is enough.” And it won’t matter what the issue is—whether it’s a rancher standing his ground over grazing rights, a minister jailed for holding a Bible study in his own home, or a community outraged over police shootings of unarmed citizens—these are the building blocks of a political powder keg. Now all that remains is a spark, and it need not be a very big one, to set the whole powder keg aflame.

"We can’t have an American people that violate the law and then just walk away from it."

    Yes We Can!
Second Amendment and gun-rights activists loudly objected to New York’s legislative mandate that they register all “assault weapons” by Tuesday.

“Nobody is going to comply with this,” Tim Swedenhjelm told the Buffalo News of the looming SAFE Act provision deadline. “We don’t call them ‘assault rifles’ because they’re not ‘assault rifles.’ Assault rifles are automatic weapons. These are not automatic weapons. When I hear politicians call them assault rifles, you know they don’t know what they’re talking about.”

Erie County Sheriff Timothy B. Howard told the News that he would not require his deputies to enforce the requirement.

“I am not encouraging them to do it,” he said. “At the same time, their own consciences should be their guide.”
    [....]
“There’s a lot of hyperbole and misinformation floating around,” New Yorkers Against Gun Violence’s executive director, Leah Gunn Barrett, stated. “People who owned these weapons before Jan. 15, 2013, can keep them. All they need to do is register them. It is painless, easy and costs nothing.”

But gun-rights proponents scoffed at such reasoning.

“We believe the law is not just, it is not the government’s business,” said Lisa Donovan, spokeswoman for NY2A, or the New York 2nd Amendment Coalition. “Registration is confiscation.”

    Plenty of others agree.

“They have been shredding the Constitution for years,” said tea party activist Rus Thompson, who led a rally of about 70 protesters in front of Buffalo’s Mahoney State Office Building.
