Whenever the debt ceiling gets raised there's always a future dollar figure (national debt in nominal dollars) to signify when the kicking of the can will need to be revisited again. I have not seen any reports whatsoever of this number from this recent "deal" and I don't think there is one. Seems to me that right now there is no debt ceiling at all. It's gone. The debt clock has basically been shut off for accounting purposes and now there's no published debt ceiling dollar figure, just a future date in Feb 2014 to revisit it. Is the country now officially without any debt spending constraints?

Obama was asked by a reporter, "Won't we have to do this again in a few months?". Obama replied, "NO!" and walked out of the press room to laughter.

We no longer have a debt ceiling nor do we have a reporting mechanism for the national debt. We do not have a budget either. Think about that.

Tucked amid the funding measures found in the Senate's bill to reopen the government and raise the debt ceiling is a payment to Bonnie Englebardt Lautenberg, widow of late Senator Frank Lautenberg.

The Senate resolution includes a $174,000 tax-free payment to the widow of the New Jersey Democrat who died June 3. At the time of his death, Lautenberg was worth an estimated $56.8 million. The House's version of the Continuing Resolution passed last month also includes the one-time payment, which is equal to a year's salary for a Senator.

According to a report in Roll Call, death gratuities like the one destined for Lautenberg's widow have been common practice for years. Roll Call cites a Congressional Research Service report on members who die in office, which says:

"...it has been the typical practice of the House to provide a death gratuity equal to the member's annual salary, payable to the deceased member's widow or widower, or children either in the annual legislative branch appropriations act or a measure providing supplemental funds for the legislative branch. By statute, a death gratuity is considered a gift."

Before his death, Lautenberg ranked as No. 9 on Roll Call's 50 Richest Members of Congress list. more at link

What has not been widely reported is the growing noise that those who followed the philosophy and presidential efforts of Ron Paul, and who have now progressed to his son, U.S. Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., have managed to make at various Republican statewide conventions and meetings in the past year.

Their emergence is like that of the Moral Majority and Christian Coalition, both of which played a huge role in GOP politics in the 1980s and 1990s.

Unlike the tea party, support for the “Paulites” is likely less prominent among voters. But their strength at the intraparty level is much stronger than the rudderless and leaderless tea party of 2013. And with the emergence of a more polished and less polarizing national leader in Sen. Rand Paul, they may begin to pick up an increasing percentage of support among GOP primary voters, many of whom identified with the tea party philosophy of old. Their true ascendance will come this year, as they will likely follow the pattern set by leaders of former presidential candidate and Christian Coalition leader Pat Robertson in the early 1990s.

It is somehow fitting that on the day when even more undisputed evidence is revealed, surrounding the most brazen market manipulation scheme in history - one involving the "unmanipulable" Libor benchmark rate which serves as the foundation for hundreds of trillions in interest rate sensitive instruments - that the CFTC would also come out moments ago, and announce that in its long-running investigation of alleged manipulation in the silver market... there is absolutely nothing wrong.

    Reuters reports:
The U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission on Wednesday said it has closed its long-running investigation into complaints about manipulation in the silver markets, and is not recommending charges.

The CFTC publicly confirmed the probe in September 2008. At the time, the agency had received complaints about whether the silver futures contracts traded on the Commodity Exchange Inc (COMEX) were being manipulated.

"Based upon the law and evidence as they exist at this time, there is not a viable basis to bring an enforcement action with respect to any firm or its employees related to our investigation of silver markets," the CFTC said in a statement.
    Just like that, case closed.

Medical marijuana is legal in California, but the combination of valuable drugs and what is often a cash-only business can attract some rough characters.

That's why some dispensaries use armored car companies to get their money to and from their favorite bank (or elsewhere). But the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration says no more. The federal authority has told armored car companies they can no longer work with some, perhaps all, cannabis retailers in California and Colorado.

Pay up and you won't be placed with the animal commoners. Sounds a little extortion-y to me.

Some prisoners at one California jail will now have the option to pay their way into a more comfortable stay, community news source the Argus reports.

The Fremont Police Department is now offering its inmates a "pay to stay" option. For a one-time fee of $45 plus $155 a night, prisoners serving short sentences on lesser charges can stay in a smaller facility while avoiding county jails.

"It's still a jail; there's no special treatment," Lt. Mark Devine, a Fremont police official who oversees the program, told Chris De Benedetti of the Argus. "They get the same cot, blanket and food as anybody in the county jail, except that our jail is smaller, quieter and away from the county jail population."

THERE MAY NEVER be a better spokesman for closing the gun show loophole than Adam Yahiye Gadahn.

A 32-year-old American and convert to Islam, Mr. Gadahn referred to the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, as “blessed raids” and called for additional “jihad against America.” He has been on the FBI’s Most Wanted Terrorists list and faces criminal charges for treason and for providing material support to al-Qaeda. Mr. Gadahn is believed to have left his native Orange County, Calif., for Pakistan, where he has become a multimedia front man for the terrorist organization.

His latest message, released on the Internet last week, calls on extremists in the West to take up arms against the United States.

“Let’s take America as an example,” he says. “America is absolutely awash with easily obtainable firearms. You can go down to a gun show at the local convention center and come away with a fully automatic assault rifle, without a background check, and most likely without having to show an identification card. So what are you waiting for?”

Just something to reinforce that we are....well....a force.

    1. Ron Paul isn't a candidate, he's a community
When Ron Paul steps up to a podium, there isn't just a campaign behind him, but legions of followers chatting on RonPaulForums.com, sending out fundraising messages on YouTube, keeping up with him on DailyPaul.com and, for a brief while, finding love libertarian style on the now-defunct RonPaulSingles.com. It's a cohesive, committed community and woe to the candidate who underestimates it.

"For many of the Ron Paul supporters, it's like a lifestyle or a calling," Grayson says. "I don't want to equate it to a church because that sounds cultlike and that's not fair, but people who believe in Congressman Paul have this sort of bond and kinship that causes them to do other things."

Though Paul was unsuccessful in 2008, supporters have been instrumental in pressuring members of Congress for more auditing of the Federal Reserve and retained their relevance throughout the 2010 midterms. During his race against Rand Paul, Grayson says his campaign monitored the Ron Paul forums and chat rooms just to see how his followers were reacting and what they were planning.

"I don't know that these people can actually win, but they can impact the debate now," Grayson says. "None of the other candidates have that: They might have more supporters, but they don't have supporters for whom this is such an important part of their life."

I was flat friggin broke last election and scraped up coins in my couch to donate to the campaign last time. Im not so broke this time around. Btw, fuck Grayson. Why is anybody even talking to him after losing to Rand by 23 points?

As the nation struggles with long-term unemployment at rates not seen in generations, contracted credit and the hoarding of public dollars by the banks, Congressman Kucinich (D-OH) today introduced a dramatic new proposal to establish fiscal integrity, reassert Congressional sovereignty and regain control of monetary policy from private banks. The National Emergency Employment Defense Act of 2010 would allow the federal government to directly fund badly-needed infrastructure repairs and fund education systems nationwide by spending money into circulation without increasing the national debt. The bill would end the current practice of fractional reserve lending, whereby the economy depends upon private financial institutions to lend money into circulation.

Congressman Kucinich stated, “The staggeringly bad employment and economic numbers represent a massive problem which cries out for bold action. Rather than crossing our fingers and hoping that banks will finally lend some of the billions of public dollars they haven’t thus far seen fit to lend, we can take action. My bill would replace the Federal Reserve System’s dependence on private banks to create credit. In its place, a Monetary Authority under the Treasury Department would directly inject liquidity into the economy by purchasing much needed public infrastructure repair. Today, we have idle capital, millions of able-bodied but unemployed workers, unused equipment, and record low interest rates. These conditions are the best possible time to make a long-term investment in our nation’s infrastructure. My bill would do exactly that.”
