  1. People do have the capacity for reason. But when you insult them most people stop thinking and begin reacting according to their feelings and usually become stubbornly set in what ever their position. In my experience its been better to appeal directly to their intelligence and show them that they are incorrect and let them come to the conclusion that they are wrong. They will then change their opinions and hold to the new more educated opinion.
  2. People have the capacity to reason. You don't need to always show them the whole thing. A strong statement telling them that they are wrong is often all you need to do. Then they do the rest, at least when the other person can think.

If they're feeling like idiots, they will feel bad. Feeling bad makes people try to do something different to feel better. So they might just go ahead and think and stop being idiots.
  3. "If somebody knows she has been brainwashed, that might encourage her to clean her mind."

I disagree. You catch more flies with honey and earn more respect by being respectful. You make someone feel stupid or treat them like their an idiot then they will rebel against anything you say to them and turn them off to any validity your argument might have.
