01-24-2008, 02:50 PM
The Portland Republican Caucus will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 2, at King Middle School, 92 Deering Ave.

It's the Republican City Committee's biennial meeting to elect delegates to the state convention, elect representatives to the Cumberland County Republican Committee and ratify membership and bylaws of the city committee.

The municipal caucus is the first step in the political process leading to the state convention, to be held May 2-3 at the Augusta Civic Center.

Nick McGee, city committee president, said Portland delegates to the state convention will play a major role in electing delegates to the Republican National Convention, where the Republican presidential nominee will be selected.

All registered Portland Republicans are welcome to participate in the caucus.
Others wishing to participate may register a half hour before the meeting as a Republican if they are not already enrolled in another party.

New this year, the state party will conduct a Presidential Preference Survey. Results from across Maine will be reported to the state party and announced at a celebration event, also on Feb. 2, hosted by the Cumberland County Republican Committee.

The celebration event will be at 7 p.m. at the Portland Club, 156 State St. in Portland.

The city committee’s mission is to recruit and promote candidates for municipal, county and state offices. For more information, contact McGee at 797-3960 or nmcgee1@maine.rr.com.
