Sorry if this is already addressed but I couldn't find the answer. What happens to Fred and Duncan's delegates they earned? Are they freed to vote as they want or what? If Huck and Judy drop out then there will be quite a few delegates out there who no longer have a candidate. Just wondering.

Lost into the bowls of time and space?

Actually, I don't know. Good question. :P

I was wondering the exact same thing. Great question, since I was asking it as well :D

I don't think they are lost because in order to win the nomination a Republican candidate must have 1191 delegates. If all but two or three make it to the end and the drop outs delegates are lost then you couldn't get the 1191 delegates. Maybe this is where the brokered convention thing comes in.

They get to pick another candidate at the national convention is what Ive heard. Someone correct me if I am wrong.

I'm sure it depends on the state (since everything else regarding delegate rules is state-governed). Most likely the majority of states permit them to vote at their pleasure, but some may have weird rules about going with the second highest vote count or some other obscure regulation.

Pretty sure they become unbound or they vote for their candidate until unbound. This is why it is imperative to stay in the race. As long as noone has 1191 delegates, they can't win outright as far as I know.

From a quick search including:

it appears that the deligates are still bound to vote for their candidate for the first round of the national convention, then they are free to change to another candidate.

in the case of a candidate who drops out who has not won 5 states - I believe that person is therefore not eligible to be nominated and the delegates would become uncommitted delegates. I don't believe they would vote for their candidate in the first round.
