What purpose does an alternate delegate serve, compared to a normal delegate? I'm just curious...

I believe if the person elected as the delegate doesn't go to the meeting, the alternate takes his place. Its like a bench player.

alternate delegates are substitutes for normal delegates. if there are delegates that don't show up on the designated day, alternates are seated in their place. if a delegate has to leave, an alternate is supposed to be seated in their place. there may be other differences but that is the major one.

Or like an Olympic alternate as they are chosen every 4 years!:D
