Another thing, I can almost hear the destruction of special interest groups. Marijuana advocates will get what they want, gamblers will get what they want, civil rights groups will sort of get what they want... everyone is a winner with Paul.

Not the social liberals. THere are a huge number of people in this world who will hear that he doesn't believe in national health care and make up their mind based on that alone.

My parents are senior citizens. Try telling them that eliminating Social Security is a good thing.

I'm assuming that programs like that would be phased out, but they get scared at the mere mention of somebody tampering with their system.

Health care is an issue for them too. NO way can they qualify for a policy, they're too old, with pre-existing conditions, and they can't affaord to wait to allow market forces to properly adjust the health care costs.

Heck, I can't get a conventional policy.

I'm assuming that programs like that would be phased out, but they get scared at the mere mention of somebody tampering with their system.I've never heard anywhere that he was going to end Social Security like *snap.* I've read that he thinks the Social Security system is being unfairly robbed by the government for other programs, and that he thinks that young people should be able to opt out if they want to. Basically, let private institutions have the ability to compete with Social Security, and eventually the market will work itself out. I personally do not think that the constitution states that public heath care is something that the government can not be involved in.
Promote the general Welfare.
Of course our current bureaucracy would screw it up big time, but supporting the health of the citizens is an established government mandate, imho.

That's just a piece of introductory text. Under your interpretation, the government could be involved in practically anything if it were sold as promoting the people's welfare. Article I Section 8 is where you'll find the government's powers.
