IMO, Ron needs to focus on four issues: Taxes. Spending. Abortion. Strong national defense.
Those four issues are deeply rooted in conservative/republican philosophy, and he kicks ass on all four. Most of the "base" sees him as an anti-war guy and that's it, and they aren't anti-war.
They know his war position, and they may/may not agree with him. However, because that is being pushed so hard he isn't winning over the base and they don't really even know his position on the the four issues above. Plus, by emphasizing strong national defense ideals, it takes the bite off of him being against Iraq which is consistently used to paint him as anti-military/troop/defense overall.
In short, he (and we as canvassers) need to start pounding the drums that the Republican base actually dances to.
