A Mormon posted about being upset with his fellow Mormon's support of Romney. I've done some research on how to target Mormon's. Let's get some votes!

As a full fledged participating Mormon, I am so sick and tired of these sheople. Worst of all I live in Utah where the Deseret News (LDS owned) runs daily Romney updates. I hope the LDS community recognizes soon the charlatain that Romney truly is. I'm nearly an outcast in the congregation I participate in because I have literally called people out during Sunday School lessons etc... when they plug Romney. As a Mormon, I'm sick of em and want them to take off their Mitt goggles and do some research. Any suggestions on how to deal with my inner anxiety?

I've actually been working with my Meetup leader (who is an official coordinator for the campaign) who talks with Rand Paul a lot. After talking with a few Mormons he asked me to do some research on the Mormons and how we might target them as a demographic.

So, I began researching and have come across all kinds of interesting stuff. You'd be surprised how many Mormons are involved in politics and all across the spectrum (Harry Reid and Mitt Romney are just a couple).

The strategy I've recommended to him to take back to Rand is to quote Ezra Taft Benson, former Secretary of Agriculture and former President of the Mormon Church (highest ranking person; like the Pope?), in a debate.

Some quotes I think may be useful in a debate I gathered from an address Mr. Benson gave at BYU (their Notre Dame) called The Constitution A Heavenly Banner (http://speeches.byu.edu/?act=viewitem&id=87).

The most important single function of government is to secure the rights and freedoms of individual citizens.

The fourth basic principle we must understand is that people are superior to the governments they form

Government is created by the people. No individual possesses the power to take another's wealth or to force others to do good, so no government has the right to do such things either. The creature cannot exceed the creator.

For the past two centuries, those who do not prize freedom have chipped away at every major clause of our Constitution until today we face a crisis of great dimensions.

For the last few weeks I have now targeted Mormons using the these addresses by their own church leader and have found much more success. I've even brought over two people who have now maxed out their donations to Ron Paul.

If they don't switch over to Ron Paul or continue supporting Romney I go straight for the jugular and I always love asking these question, "So, this guy is like your Pope right? Do you not believe what he has said in these addresses? Are Mitt Romney's assertions to torture with enhanced interrogation techniques at Guantanamo consistent with the beliefs and teachings of your Church?"

Overall, I think these Mormons are good people who are trying to be engaged in the process but they just don't seem to understand their own beliefs and lack a consistent philosophy. So, I think we need to get in Romney's Mormon base and start stealin his votez!

Imagine a full-page ad, divided into three columns, in the Deseret News, etc.:

At the top of the page, ask in BIG letters: "For whom would Ezra T. Benson vote?"

Under that, have headshots of all three candidates above their respective columns.

Middle column: This guy Benson with those quotes.

Left column: Ron Paul with near identical quotes.

Right column: Romney quotes saying the opposite.

We can take Utah with that. (Plus pick up all the Nevada mormon votes that we missed today, during the general election in November)

Who wants to run with it?

Love the idea. It is these kind of local ads that could really help.

Get in Romney's grill

hehe

Just remember to be nice. It could result in blowback if we try too negative of an approach.

I plucked those particular quotes because Ron Paul has almost identical quotes.

On Wikipedia I've found that Mr. Benson (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ezra_Benson) was a widely respected Secretary of Agriculture in Eisenhower's administration. I've also found a J. Reuben Clark, Jr. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/J._Reuben_Clark) who was also member of their First Presidency (composed of three people who are the top layer of their church) for 18 years. Mr. Clark was the US Under Secretary of State, Ambassador to Mexico and respected by President Hoover. The BYU law school is named the J. Reuben Clark Law School.

Mr. Benson has authored books titled "The Constitution: A Heavenly Banner", "God, Family, Country: Our Three Great Loyalties", and "This Nation Shall Endure." Mr. Clark has authored "Stand Fast By Our Constitution."

I think it would be good to have quotes from both, if not more, of these accomplished men. Then we have multiple quotes from their own authorities. Perhaps we could find some quotes from their living leaders?

I think the ad in the Deseret News would have widespread effects on all Mormons throughout the country. Go after that Mormon base .... they have family all over and most are very close knit. This is one reason I think Romney is able to run such a strong organization all over the country. He is piggybacking on the organization of the Mormon Church. If we can infiltrate his base then we can graft his organization into our already extremely powerful grassroots (Facebook, Meetup, MySpace, etc.).

What could the top of the ad say, "WHO SHOULD A FAITHFUL MORMON VOTE FOR?" Then have the various quotes by their leaders

What are some other newspapers that reach strong concentrations of Mormons? SLC and where else? Idaho? Arizona?

That sounds like a great idea!

as a mormon, i FULLY SUPPORT THIS! in fact i wrote something similar in a thread called "The Rest of the West" earlier today, but those benson (who we consider a prophet) quotes are spot on.

utah might still be difficult, but arizona, idaho, colorado and even california have large mormon populations that could give as a push over the other guys. if you pulled even a fraction of the mormon vote away from romney, it would really help in beating mccain and huck.

and as a mormon, i say go for the deseret news.

Bump. Great call. If Mitt Romney thinks he can get the Mormon vote without a fight, he's got another think coming.

Can you imagine the look on his face? :D

Lets get working on this, putting together articles to post in papers.

These are good ideas.

I really think you should try to get them to all the Meetups and precinct leaders expecially in the states just suggested above here.

Very Important in Nevada

As another Mormon, I also think this is a fantastic (and very powerful) idea! I , too, would recommend the Deseret News as the paper to target in Utah.

In addition, what about a targeted flier along the same lines? This could be used anywhere. It was mentioned that many Mormons are politically active, and I'd say that is true in other states as well as those with larger mormon populations.

Someone should set up a website with all this information, it would work just like the ad for the rest of the country.
