Only three presidential candidates landed more than 100 pledged delegates after online and county convention votes were tabulated this week to elect at-large delegates to the Feb. 5 state convention.

According to an Associated Press calculation of unofficial returns, Mitt Romney leads the pack with 184 total delegates, followed by Mike Huckabee with 134 and Fred Thompson with 103. Thompson will add at least six delegates to his total when results from Mineral County are tabulated, and possibly more when Monongalia County results come in. Neither county has been tabulated yet due to technical errors.

Ron Paul lost about 170 delegates during the county voting process, and now lands in a distant fourth place with about 60 delegates, followed by Rudy Giuliani with about 25, and John McCain and Alan Keyes bringing up the rear.

As usual, it appears that many involved in the RP campaign were unfamiliar with the state-level process for winning the primary.

I don't really blame the supporters - many are new to the process. But they needed to have been better informed about pledged/unpledged delegates and the Borda count/runoff system that's used to determine delegate selection.

...170 delegates.

In order for this not to happen again, we need to own the process - we need to be all over it (that's what Romney's strategy). Otherwise we're going to get killed in every election that isn't a straight primary.

No, HQ didn't drop the ball.

In contested counties the GOP establishment closed ranks to make sure that Paul supporters didn't win and become delegates.

Just like Wyoming.

Don't you realize that in every instance where the delegate has identified himself as a Paul supporter, and someone else was running for that delegate spot, EVERY LAST WAR MONGERING establishment party member supported the other guy?
