Subject: Where is the Ron Paul information

Thank you for contacting NYTimes.com

Currently on the results page, the candidates are ordered by the
number of delegates received by each under the Times' delegate
allocation standards.

For the candidates who have not received any delegates yet, which
currently includes Rudy Giuliani, Duncan Hunter, Ron Paul and Fred
Thompson, we have been using the candidates' ranking in national
polls as the factor in deciding who to include, since the page is
meant to be both a guide to both the completed contests and the
upcoming races.

The most recent Times/CBS News poll had Giuliani at 10%, Thompson at
8% and Paul at 5%. Other polls show similar trends -- see:
http://www.realclearpolitics.com/epolls/2008/president/us/republican_presidential_nomination-192.html

If Ron Paul pulls ahead of Thompson or Giuliani in the delegate
count, he'll be included on the page in place of them.

It's also worth pointing out that Paul and the other candidates in the lower tiers are all included in the individual state.

Doesn't Paul have more delegates than Giuliani?

Yes, he does, and I wrote them to correct it ASAP.

HAHAHAHA..

I told them I hope they will keep their word.

You all should write to them also with this information.

The only thing more fun than making up arbitrary rules is then not following them. Working at the NYT must be a laugh riot.

Here's the thread with all of the contact information on this and most of the story. I got the same response, and will be calling this dude later today.

The delegate thing is a good point, but the entire point of that page is to relay information from the primaries. It isn't a "national poll" results page. What they are doing is intentional and it makes no sense, and the national poll excuse doesn't fly by me.

Let's let them know!

Hmmm... good point. I assume this means there's some sort of state convention where the actual delegates get awarded. And that means Ron Paul could actually gain or lose delegates?

No Iowa delegates have been awarded yet.

True but:

Rudy and Fred are on the delegate chart despite 0 delegates.

Rudy and Fred are on the state votes chart despite getting fewer votes than Ron at times.

The NYT tries to justify this by ranking state votes/delegates charts by an entirely extraneous factor (national polls), rather than ranking the votes chart by votes and the delegates chart by delegates. If only some 0-delegate candidates are to be included, it makes more sense to include those with delegates expected from past results (Iowa) rather than include those candidates with none.

Even given the NYT rules based on national polls, the NYT arbitrarily makes the cutoff that includes Fred but excludes Ron when a different formatting would fit Ron on the chart easily (i.e., the NYT did the equivalent of cropping him out of a photograph).

Its bullshit, and there's nothing that says we can't keep contacting them every day until this is resolved. National polls are meaningless when there is actual primary data, which is what the table is suspossed to convey. I'll call and email again after I eat. Also, now we have the dude's name, so maybe we can get through to him directly and demand to speak with his supervisors if he will not resolve this for us. :D
