The Federal Reserve being private is not the problem.

The problem is that the Federal Reserve allows the government to easily borrow and thus expand the monetary supply thereby taxing the people via inflation.

When foreign governments buy Treasury Bonds (IOU's) it puts the U.S. in debt to foreigners.

The mechanism is the problem not who owns it. Most national reserve banks around the world are state owned yet the fundamental problem with the system is identical whether they be private or nationalised.
