Pulling for Ron Paul
January 16, 2008
Ken Newton -- St. Joseph News-Press, Mo.

St. JOSEPH, MI -- The "Ron Paul Revolution" took root in a downtown office Saturday with supporters rallying behind the Republican candidate's message of personal freedom and less government.

About 85 people spilled out of the South Seventh Street headquarters and listened to speeches in adjacent rooms and hallways. One speaker, Adam Kirschner, of St. Joseph, called it a "historic gathering of patriots."

Dr. Paul, a physician and 10-term Texas congressman, is seeking the GOP nomination based on low taxes, free markets and sound monetary policies. He vows to combat illegal immigration, reverse the Patriot Act, eliminate the federal income tax and return troops from Iraq.

While the candidate finished fifth in the Iowa caucuses and in the New Hampshire primary, his message has resonated with a broad spectrum of supporters.

Indeed, those who gathered Saturday reveled in their age diversity, the group ranging from long hairs to gray hairs. Even the toddler offspring of a few backers wandered around the room that featured a "Don't Tread on Me" flag.

Scott Easter, an Andrew County supporter, told the gathering he had lost faith in politicians before the Paul candidacy. He said the hope for liberty, as spelled out by the Founding Fathers, united the people in the room.

"What would Thomas Jefferson think if he came back today and saw America as it is now?" the speaker said. "They're rolling over in their graves."

State Rep. Jim Guest, a King City Republican, spent time campaigning for Dr. Paul in Iowa and said he believes the message of deteriorating freedoms has taken hold.

"I truly believe we have a government that's out of control," Mr. Guest said from the podium. "Ron Paul will get us back to governing by the Constitution."

Ryan Fisher, a St. Joseph volunteer, explained the responsibility of volunteers as the campaign heads toward the Feb. 5 Missouri primary and beyond. The 215 S. Seventh Street headquarters, staffed and funded by volunteers and not the national Paul campaign, has eight phone lines and wireless Internet capability in place for workers.

"He doesn't want to run your life," he said of the Paul philosophy. "The true essence of freedom is limited government."
