Why dont they just use the entire tax collected instead of increasing the taxes on gas.
"The head of the U.S. Dept. of Transportation stated on 15 August 2007 that about 60% of federal gas taxes are used for highway and bridge construction. Increasing taxes and spending period is going to hurt this economy worse than it is already hurt. Prices are going to rise and people are going to be told to spend. Raising the price of gas will not get people to use less of it. It is essential to any and all economy. More profits in the hands of bureaucrats, oil companies and middle men.

the gas tax is one of the only taxes that you really get a benefit from but they do not need to raise it they need to quit using it for other things like fighting no win wars ......
