This project here in Manchester, N.H., was several months in the making, and there's all kinds of work ahead. Hopefully you all can use this as a template to promote and increase liberty wherever you live.

Back in September, Keith Murphy, proprietor of Murphy's Taproom, the bar (http://www.usatoday.com/news/politics/election2008/2008-01-02-paul_N.htm) you've (http://www.csmonitor.com/2007/1204/p01s04-uspo.html) heard (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yYFzuhUysVQ) so (http://www.nhinsider.com/press-releases/2007/12/11/4th-annual-manchvegas-oscars-gala-tickets-on-sale-now.html) much (http://www.ronpaulhq.com/2007/06/another-debate-debrief.php) about (http://online.wsj.com/public/article/SB119672794515312455-_LUdo_s5AxFvcxTDAJ7SWQNqn0Q_20080102.html), approached me with his idea of how to bring change to the Manchester Republican Committee (http://www.manchestergop.com/) and advance the cause of liberty here in Manchester. (But in no way was this a takeover or an infiltration; the committee chairman here has said that the Republican Party has lost its way and needs to get back to its conservative roots. And those roots are what Ron Paul - and we - are promoting! This will be a win-win for everyone.)

Keith and several other supporters here began attending MRC monthly meetings and helping local people with their 2007 election campaigns. (Manchester elects people to local offices in odd years.) By doing so they were able to network with existing people in the Republican party and portray an image of Ron Paul supporters as people willing to work together and help others, and not as the kooks that a certain television network would have you believe we are.

Last week, several of those people ran a slate of more liberty-loving candidates for MRC officers, and most of them won (http://www.nhliberty.org/forum/index.php?topic=249.0). Partly this was due to the existing people in the party getting to know them and being able to count on them. And party it was a large group of supporters who began attending MRC monthly meetings and registered Republican so as to qualify to vote in last week's MRC election. In addition to sign waving for Ron Paul, this group of supporters also helped canvass, phone bank and sign wave for local candidates for this last November's election.

Now we are recruiting Ward Chairs from among local freedom lovers who will help find freedom-loving candidates for local offices in their wards (think precincts) next election.

Regardless of how Ron Paul does in the upcoming primaries and caucuses, we all have an opportunity here to get involved and make real change right in our own hometowns. This experience can hopefully serve as a template you can take to your town or city:

Get involved with your local Republican committee (http://www.gop.com/Connect/States.aspx)
Be known as someone willing to volunteer, help out and work with others
Learn the requirements for becoming a committee officer, ward chair or whatever other position
Find people to fill those positions who are willing to work to preserve liberty and the Constitution

You may well find some things distasteful. For instance, at one MRC meeting I sat through a presentation about "family values" at which some anti-gay comments were made, with several gay men in the room! Going forward there's going to be a lot less of that. So if something like that happens to you, don't let it stop you.

Oh, as an addendum, also consider joining the Republican Liberty Caucus (http://www.rlc.org/).
