I can't think of a downside to having SS protection. With a couple of notable exceptions, their track record at protecting their clientele is really quite good.

It's kinda hard to make a case that a candidate receiving Secret Service protection is "fringe" now isn't it?

Heck yes he should take it. It'll get him used to what he can expect when he's in the White House :D

I'm sure he's had his share of threats. He could use the resultant media attention to mention how he too has had to deal with great hostility.

On the other hand, Tim Russert would criticize him for being hypocritical by making use of a taxpayer-funded service. :rolleyes:
