View Full Version : Linux Users for Ron Paul?

It appears that there are a lot of people (http://www.ronpaulforums.com/showthread.php?t=83665&highlight=linux) who use Linux and support Ron Paul. Including me. :)

Anyways, I'm on the verge of starting a Linux software review blog, and would like to have a banner-link on my sidebar to some sort of "Linux Users for Ron Paul" site. The thing is, I can't find any. And googling doesn't help. So, my question is: is there such a site? Multiple such sites? Please give me links!

(and if there is no such place, I think we need to create it.)

EDIT: I originally posted this in a rather more appropriate sub-board, but the traffic there is so low I got no responses, hence it is now here.

Never thought I'd condescend to do something like this, but . . . bump.

I don't know, as I don't use Linux, but the concept fits... independent minded folks like to be independent in computing...

You use Linux, so I think you could easily create a website!

While I find the GPL pretty interesting, I'm not sure it is compatible with how I feel about free markets. Seeing as how libertarian ideals are for property rights, I hardly see how I should support software licenses that undermine the right to intellectual property.

Yes, that's what I was thinking. :) I'll definitely make one, if we can't find any, or at least donate web space to anyone else interested in doing so.

So . . . does anyone else know?

GPL is compatible with free markets. You can choose to accept it, or not. If you do choose to accept it, the license will hold you accountable to its terms just as any other license. Failure to do so results in loss of license, which exposes the violator to copyright violations. It's perfectly compatible with our legal system. That's why it works so well. Don't believe the FUD about it, it's not viral, it doesn't deny anyone their rights. In fact, all it does is guarantee you that IF (and ONLY IF) you choose to give the GPL software to someone else, you must ALSO give them the same rights and abilities that you yourself were given under that license.

The documentary called "Revolution OS" explains all of this quite well, even if it is a bit dry (and outdated) at times. Bruce Perens covers the GPL in detail, it's really very simple.

Combine that with Robert Cringley's "Triumph of the Nerds" documentation series and you've covered the computer industry's early years in a nutshell.
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0115398/

These are both excellent films and if you are a documentary hound I would highly recommend them.

It has been tested in courts already, so it's surely compatible with the legal system :) I don't remember the US cases now, but there were some in Germany - all won AFAIR .

Anyway, GPL is just one of the many many "free" licenses out there, so if one don't like it, one can choose something else.

I'm glad to see this thread is still alive :D

I've tried out over 10 distros of linux over the last year, but I still wind up with the Fedora at the end of the day.

http://fedoraproject.org

Reasons: I like cutting edge technology, and although Fedora surely isn't an entry-level OS, the time it takes to tweak it to your liking is very much worthwhile if you want to have some bragging rights about your uber-pwnage desktop around other tech-heads. Currently I'm running Fedora 8 (Werewolf) with the new 3D Compiz-Fusion Desktop, and XFCE window manager.

I think one thing people do not understand about linux is the separation of the Window Manager and the actual OS. Unlike Winblows, where you get your user interface and your underlying OS all in one bloated package, with Linux you have some choices. When I say window manager, what I really mean is the User Interface. Linux can be either 100% command line, or driven via several different UI-Window-Managers such as Gnome, KDE, XFCE, Fluxbox, just to name a few. Each one of these are unique in their own right, and simply the ability to have a choice as to which one you wish to use is lightyears ahead of any Microsoft product. Then of course there is my favorite application for linux:

Enter Compiz-Fusion. See this video here for a UI that may change your mind about the linux world:

Linux is pretty slick, eh? Guess what else is cool? You can RUN an entire linux system on your PC without ever installing it just to try it out! Have you ever heard of a "Live-CD"? It is a bootable Linux Disc that will load the OS into Ram one time, and then OFF YOU GO! This is a great way in my humble opinion for people who are unsure of linux to get their feet wet without throwing their whole MS world out the window right away hehe. If you want to try Nix for yourself (along with the Compiz Fusion Desktop Pre-installed), check out this Live-CD iso image for yourself here (It's called Wobbly NOP, but I just call it Drunken Puppy, since it's based on Puppy Linux):

http://puppylinux.ca/puppyfiles/wNOP/wNOP-v0.2.iso

Download this and burn it for yourself, boot from this CD and within 3 minutes you will have a working 3d linux desktop for your own personal evaluation. :D

Guess i'll throw my hat in the ring. Desktop is running Debian Etch and KDE4 (woohoo it finally released!), laptop is running Kubuntu again with KDE4, network file server is running OpenBSD, webserver and first firewall running FreeBSD, second firewall running OpenBSD again, and my little Hobbes Sun IPX running Solaris just for fun!

People, people, you don't understand! This thread is not for people to proclaim that they use Linux, this is a thread to tell me whether you know of a "Linux users in support of Ron Paul" website!

If you want to talk about Linux, this (http://www.ronpaulforums.com/showthread.php?t=83665) is the place to do it.

Though all these posts are proof that the world needs a website showing them that Linux users support Ron Paul, if there isn't already one. So, if you don't know of a website like that, go ahead and post about what you think should be on such a site, since I will likely be creating one!

And I'd better change the title of this topic to something a little more clear . . .

I've been a Gentoo user for 6 years now, and highly disagree with those who say Fedora "isn't an entry-level OS." :p

Throw my name into the hat, please.
