Adds a third branch to our legislature branch: The People. Just like making State initiatives (you know, those petitions). sign the petition on the website to amend the Constitution to allow the People to pass laws.

Umm... no. Direct Democracy is dangerous.

Could you imagine what the Neocons could do with this? People don't do their homework, if they're scared enough they'll sign anything.

Somebody here has a signature:

"Democracy is two wolves and one lamb voting on what to have for dinner."

If people would elect George Bush twice can you imagine what kind of laws they could be fooled/fearmongered/coerced into passing?

LOL you guys are priceless...

And in the meantime we have no checks and balances in government. Congress is passing things like the Patriot Act and the 2007 law defining "homegrown terrorists" which basically revokes our 1st amendment

Yes, representative democracy is so much better than a check into the system. it would add a check into the system, and the Congress would work with the people to get it to work.

I suggest you all research Switzerland. Everyone said this wouldn't work in 1848 and now 160 years later, they're #1 in GDP per capita and are a neutral, peacefull society. Keep on thinking the national initiative will fail.

24 states have initiatives as an option. many state laws are based on direct vote from the people on ballot measures. dunno what ur talkin about

Can we do this as long as those people allowed to vote have an IQ over 120?

The issue for me is not democracy. I'd live under a Monarchy if the Monarchy was Constitutionally limited in its ability to pass and enforce laws that infringed on individual liberty.

Democracy is not a cure-all political solution.

"The People" branch of government will just as readily violate the constitution as the federal gov. is doing.
