I'd imagine the vast majority of economists like Paul's positions on trade, regulation and heath care, and dislike his monetary positions. Though I don't think any would be against ending the Fed's legal monopoly on currency, most are not in favor of commodity-backed currency at all. In theory, a fiat money supply could be managed better than gold manages itself (which would be effected by market forces due to gold's other uses). The problem comes when the money is given a total monopoly, so there is no real incentive to manage it well. Then its just abused.

Alan Greenspan used to agree with Ron Paul too.. but BEFORE he worked for th federal reserve of course.. Once he got that gig he changed his tune
