Whether Ron wins or not, depends solely on whether or not we and Ron understand what is being discussed in this video:

Deceiving Images: The Science of Manipulation (http://www.linktv.org/programs/orwell_deceiving)

I really believe in what he says and I fully understand where he's coming from. But without the knowledge of how propaganda or better our brain works, he can not win anything.

Thanks for posting this. Important stuff. One of my frustrations has to do with how some folks are very knowledgeable about a particular issue. They will know it inside out. From current bills & laws. To who the players are and opposition etc. From knowing it so well they can see who the PTB/MSM attack or how "accurate" the story is or how it is framed/misleading/obtuse/or just plain wrong. The press lies and they know it yet with other subjects they may not follow or only generally know about will tend to accept what the MSM says. It drives me nuts. The press lies and has an agenda so how can tell when they are lying and when they are not?

Fabulous video! I think the panelists made some fantastic points.

This campaign has been focused on the issues -- after watching that video, it's clear that that's been a mistake. We should be conscious of the invoked frames/context (in ads, speeches, debates, etc), and use emotion more than reason.

This is the precisely course correction that is so badly needed.

Imagine if Iraq was called an occupation instead of a war by the media. All questions to candidates would be "do you support the occupation in Iraq?" If the truth were presented, just by changing 1 word, we would be out of there tomorrow. It would dramatically change the course of this country. The war ended when we took Bagdad. That is the dirty little secret.

Enzo

It's an Occupation of Iraq. Not a War. Therefore, it's not something we can win... only something we can withdraw from sooner.

This awareness of the associative influence of particular words is becoming more widespread among non specialists. For instance certain phrases have developed to recognize the negative influence which words collect over time: "This word has too much baggage" or "guilt by association" "or that word has a loaded connotation".

People in general understand this principle and so do the candidates to some varying degree. The experts did not tell us anything new as far as I'm concerned except for Drew Westen, who provided three words pairs and then asked people to name a laundry detergent. There was no way anyone could forecast what association he intended to employ until he asked the question about the detergent.

He really clarified how this associative function can be deliberately used or ab-used beyond the simple avoidance of negatively loaded words. He showed how a large variety of unnoticed images and words can co opt the processing of independent conclusions to be drawn from an otherwise unimpeded default aggregate of the associative pool.

The associative pool can be manipulated by clever marketing and this as a deliberate action I think is unethical. The public agrees since every time these tactics are revealed for what they are people react with disgust. Nevertheless the rewards for success outweigh the risks of getting caught. People are so cynical and so helpless to make change all they can resolve to do if anything is to believe less and trust less every argument presented to them by any corporate message.

Consider the bookcase behind Huck and see this can and does backfire. Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar and people understand this also.

One of the key take-aways for me from the video is that all words, regardless of the speaker's intent, invoke a frame or context, which is then used as part of the listener's evaluation process.

I don't see this as manipulation. Rather, this sort of understanding of communication is key when you're trying to get something across to a large audience.

It applies not only to the occupation, but also to RP's other platform issues. What are some ways that the message could be polished by invoking the right frames? For example:

Abolish the Federal Reserve
--> stop the government from stealing your savings
--> eliminate the hidden tax of inflation

There is a thread 'Suggestions for the campaign' and this video should be mentioned there.

RP should rephrase his arguments. He needs to speak in positive terms. He must talk about values not trying to educate the masses on issues. There is a post by someone who changed the tone of a lot of RP's arguments. This should be the number one thing the campaign must change.

We need an ad blitz with something like Reagan's "Morning in America". We need to connect to positive values in voters minds.

An independent conclusion may arise from ones own associative process. In such case, it is an inner and subjective manipulation. I dont call this thinking. It is simply relating. When ones own attention is used to make oneself aware of......when one is doing this......then it is possible to prevent unconscious associative material from influencing the train of thought. Frequently "loaded" words or phrases are due to the emotional content associated to them. This can also be checked by self observation. In order to purify inner activity, we first need to witness it (how it is processed inwardly). In practicing this, external manipulation through words, images, emotion, and even another persons thought process becomes apparent.

These guys are right, however they miss the point of genuineness and truth. They talked gave examples of talking but they forget that the answers are rehearsed it is fake and there are alternative motives to what politicians want. Genuineness and truth have nothing to do with it.

The point they made (very successfully, IMO) is that in order to communicate your message to the masses, it needs to be properly framed. The particular words that are used has a huge impact. The words can still be genuine and true, but they should also be carefully chosen to have maximum impact -- particularly in advertising.

I don't think it's too late to employ these techniques in RP's campaign. Not by a long shot.

From 16:30 to 17:17 in the video:

"The point that Nick was making is a powerful one. Framing and the use of metaphor is necessary to say what you believe. And the reason for that is a very simple one, though it's often missed because most people don't know very much about what's been discovered in cognitive science and in neuroscience in the last 30 years. The basic finding is this: surprise -- you think with your brain ... and most thought is unconscious, below the level of consciousness, about 98%. And that is a remarkable, important, important fact."

There is such a thing as going too far with distrust. Dr. Paul has always proven where he stands by voting that way. Just because he disagrees with a portion of his supporters on the specifics of 9/11 is definitely not reason to think he's an establishment candidate in disguise. Keep in mind that a large degree of supporters disagree with you as well. Does this make them establishment supporters? Honestly it doesn't matter, as long as you realize the government poses a risk to us the larger it grows.

Now, I hope you can refrain from posting any more controversial topics in this very important thread. If this was an attempt to veer the conversation away from the OT, I don't appreciate that at all.

On Topic: I think I'm going to watch that video at least one more time if not more since it is important to fully understand this. Not only can it help with the campaign, but it helps with understanding when someone is trying to manipulate me. I'll see if I can find more on this topic as well.

But then, I go back and listen to one of Reagan's speeches. Oh, wait. Nevermind.

As a nation, we've been duped and manipulated beyond belief by the politicians and others. I sometimes feel like they didn't know Ron Paul was going to run in this election or that he would get the support he has. Because I can tell from watching the debates, the parties have chosen our candidates to play off the emotions of certain demographics. They don't like it when the applecart gets turned over. Hence, the boos, snickers, giggles, and outright ignoring of published data BY the government by the candidates. Yeah, I want one of those no talent ass clowns running the country. Ron Paul Exposes New World Order & Bush Snr. (http://www.prisonplanet.com/articles/may2007/200507RPNWO.htm)

Says American empire in trouble, dollar plunging

Jones Report
Sunday May 20, 2007

Presidential candidate Ron Paul (R-TX) was asked a question about the New World Order's agenda for a one-world government during a campaign stop in Austin, Texas on Saturday, amidst tremendous turnout and support.

Ron Paul responded, "The first President Bush said the New World Order was in tune-- and that's what they were working for. The U.N. is part of that government. They're working right now very significantly towards a North American Union. That's why there's a lot of people in Washington right now who don't care too much about our borders. They have a philosophical belief that national sovereignty is not important. It's also the reason I've made the very strong suggestion the U.S. need not be in the U.N. for national security reasons."

Great video, although I think frank was out of place on that stage. He was only partially relevant. He made a few good points on communication, but he rambled on about nonsense for the rest of the time and tried to be a comedian.

We've come about as far as we can come with plain logic and reason. If we are going to win, we need to appeal to the emotions of the general masses, especially the neocons.

The campaign need to run emotional ads on an epic scale. These ads need to show strong imagery of military strength, and evoke national pride, playing on the things that appeal to the neocon. At the same time they need to invoke OUR frames that include things that the neocon has a negative opinion about:

-nation building
-occupation
-tying the troops hands behind their backs
-failing to get the real terrorists
-lack of planning
-strategy blunder

This is great information. I've always thought that the Ron Paul "has never voted for...." bullet points were negative, and as such I'm prone to avoid reading them. I'd rather see what he's for.

Someone recently posted a thread asking why more women aren't for Ron Paul and I think one of the reasons is the Ron Paul Red Pill. A little more warmth and charm and re-phrasing his platforms to exude a positive feeling in himself and his audience, would go a long way to reaching those who aren't drawn to the negative aspects of issues.

I noticed some previous comments of how to frame our ideas so people will accept them.

Here are some other ideas:

The graduated income is the 2nd plank of the Communist Manifesto. Communism has a negative connotation for most people. Suppose we say something like: End the Communist income tax, something that has no place in a capitalist country like the USA.

Our culture is rooted in the idea that "money is the root of all evil", even though most people who believe that idea hypocritically want to earn and keep their money. Should we let the government have too much money? After all, if money is evil, the more you have the more evil you are. I think you can see where I am going with this; when the government has too much money, it does evil with it. I'm not sure how to develop this into a sound bite that will make sense.

A related concept is that money is power. The more money the government takes from you, the less power YOU have and the more power government has. Collectivists see no problem with this of course. "We want you to have more power, and the government have less power. That is why the income tax needs to discarded".

I like Ron's explanation of why our foreign policy is such a disaster: suppose China was occupying the USA, wouldn't we be resentful? Framing foreign policy in terms of empathizing with people in other nations could work.

Libertarians have been trying this for years, manipulating people with emotion, and few people can do it yet.

I can't figure out how to get it off the site, but there are a few other links for it, though most are real player.http://www.nypl.org/research/chss/pep/pepdesc.cfm?id=3498 and click the "view the program" link. This will start a download of the video which is quite long. However, this info is invaluable, you just have to keep from puking when you notice Frank Luntz is there.

I downloaded it using an add-on in firefox. :) It's like 200+MB.
The website sent it to me, I just failed to delete the file. :) That can't be copy right violation can it :)

Can we take Dr. Paul's positions and 'frame' them positively and effectively here in this thread?

Here is a excellent example of some heavy subliminal advertising.

It works really well, and if Ron Paul did something like this it would be something we would be talking about for a long time.
It points out negative things, the "they" talks directly to you and creates a frame of "Well you are under their control" and then "Or are you?"

This is absolute brilliance, People will Love this AD, And More Will HATE this ad but if it's properly followed up this is the stuff that can sway a nation.

Here's a few ideas to get the ball rolling:

End the occupation of Iraq. Bring our troops home.

Your paycheck is worth less every week because boat-loads of money are being printed to pay for the occupation in Iraq, which dilutes the value of your money

The amount you are being paid in social security is being reduced every year -- not by giving you fewer dollars, but by making those dollars able to buy less by printing so many of them

Guess who benefits first when the government prints lots of new money? Wall Street. Guess who gets hurt most? The middle class and the poor.

When the government prints new money, it is robbing from the poor and giving to the rich.

You are being taxed without your consent, by a hidden tax called inflation.

Guess how health insurance companies make more money? Not by providing more service, but by declining claims. Do you really want all health care in this country to be controlled by insurance companies?

Bring trust back to the presidency. Vote Ron Paul.

When illegal immigrants get free health care, they are stealing from the American Taxpayer.

Illegal immigrants don't pay taxes.

"Your paycheck is worth less every week because boat-loads of money are being printed to pay for the occupation in Iraq, which dilutes the value of your money"

This looks good, tie in with liquid. It creates a weird meaning... I'm thinking.... blood... oil... tears... things that flow and how we need to maybe "band-aid the wounded nation" "Is there a doctor in the house?"

A wound idea could fit, Americans are wounded and desperate to survive.

The hidden tax is a shadowy thief in the night that takes your children's future.

Health UN-surance , maybe you'll get treated?

I seen this thread a few times and ignored it, but I finally watched the video and its an excellent video. Ron Paul should hire the entire panel today!

I think this thread would get more attention if it had a different title. I skimmed past it a few times before deciding to check it out, and the information presented in the video is extremely important IMO. The title had me thinking the thread contained silly photos that had been manipulated.....

Superb video. All three speakers are top notch, including FU Frank.

We are running an honest straight shooting campaign, with no subliminal messages like the Reps & Dems do. Imagine if we were to add some of that magic powder.

I don't think we need to use subliminal messages, but rather we need to change the message into a positive message. Instead of RP saying I voted no on this and no on that, he should change his message to say he votes yes for civil liberties, yes for freedom, etc. The delivery of his message needs to be worded in a way to appeal to the voters. I am convinced most Americans agree with Ron Pauls issues, but its his delivery which many people seem to have an issue with IMO.

Although the panel itself was slanted towards encouraging democratic ideals and how to achieve their general goals, I thought this was quite a revealing program.

Yes, we could use this kind of education.

But wait, Frank says here that he's left politics? When was this recorded? Can we expect that he won't be on Fox again, manipulating the focus groups?

I really believe in what he says and I fully understand where he's coming from. But without the knowledge of how propaganda or better our brain works, he can not win anything.

I told you so.

Every Ron supporter needs to understand it, not just the HQ.

This.

The campaign can't be in every(your) neighborhood.
