Republicans 2008: F. Thompson 29%, Giuliani 28%
July 22, 2007

(Angus Reid Global Monitor) - Fred Thompson is barely ahead in the race for the Republican Party’s presidential nomination in the United States, according to a poll by Harris Interactive. 29 per cent of respondents would vote for the actor and former Tennessee senator in a 2008 primary, up seven points since June.

Former New York City mayor Rudy Giuliani is a close second with 28 per cent, followed by Arizona senator John McCain with 17 per cent, and former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney with nine per cent. Support is lower for Colorado congressman Tom Tancredo, Kansas senator Sam Brownback, California congressman Duncan Hunter, Texas congressman Ron Paul, former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee, former Wisconsin governor Tommy Thompson, and Nebraska senator Chuck Hagel.

On Jul. 19, Tommy Thompson discussed his views on the military, saying, "Right now, the National Guard members are part of the regular Army. They never signed up to do that, and I don’t think the states ever expected that. I would also require the resources and equipment necessary to train the National Guard and to get them the tools they need to do the job."

In American elections, candidates require 270 votes in the Electoral College to win the White House. In November 2004, Republican George W. Bush earned a second term after securing 286 electoral votes from 31 states. Democratic nominee John Kerry received 252 electoral votes from 19 states and the District of Columbia.

Bush is ineligible for a third term in office. The next presidential election is scheduled for November 2008.
