People will respond much more favorably if you give them something that applies locally.
I made this for that purpose. It's a 3-column 8.5" x 11" Microsoft Word document which you can download, edit, print, and photocopy in the quantity you need for your precinct. You can get a list of addresses in your precinct by signing up as a precinct leader at voters.ronpaul2008.com (http://voters.ronpaul2008.com/).
Download .doc file (http://www.ronpaulgateway.com/wiki/images/a/aa/Precinctspecific3columns.doc)
(View PDF sample (http://www.ronpaulgateway.com/wiki/images/7/7f/Precinctspecific.pdf)) – not editable!
If you are unable to customize this for your location, PM me with your meetup group URL, voting date, and voting location. I'll make the necessary edits and send you a PDF. Please do this yourself if you are able! I'm busy!
A Spanish translation is being prepared; subscribe to this thread and check back later if you need this.
If you plan to change the text of the document to emphasize issues that are important in your region, that's fine, but PLEASE do not include contentious issues, your own personal issues, or those items that need a thorough explanation (such as "abolish the IRS" or "end the Department of Whatever"). The goal of this piece is to get them interested enough to do some more research and fall in love with the message, not convince them immediately or bombard them with completely unfamiliar ideas.
Distribution tips:
Do not put this or any other material in mailboxes. That's illegal thanks to the U.S. Postal Service's monopoly on first class mail.
If they have a newspaper hook on the bottom of their mailbox (common where mail is hand-delivered) I puncture my flier with it in the space where there is no text.
If there's no place to hang the flier, I roll or fold it and stick it on the door handle or somewhere near the mailbox.
If there's nowhere decent to put it, I try opening the storm door and putting it in there.
If the door is locked, I tape it to the door with a roll of scotch tape I keep in my pocket. Paper clips might also be useful.
If rain is in the forecast, you might want to roll and rubber band all of your fliers the night before and put them in a sandwich baggie. This will also speed up distribution since you can just drop it on the front step instead of trying to figure out where to put it.
Colored paper is very helpful since it will help people see it. Sometimes people do not use their front door at all so they won't see it from a distance.
Be sure that you don't accidentally distribute outside of your precinct if you have the voting location listed. If you send a Ron Paul supporter to the wrong voting location, they may just give up and go home.
