I live in beautiful San Diego California. Great place to live and great people to talk politics with, we're a very unique breed of voter! The other day I was listening to the Ed Schultz show on the local progressive talk station and they had a caller on talking about Ron Paul. The caller was encouraging them to bring on Dr. No but they weren't really too open to it. Schultz was definately negative and his sidekick Scooter seemed very anti-libertarian (to put it nicely).
Anyways, I was pretty upset. I listen to that station because it's the ONLY alternative view I can get on AM radio. And it seemed that these guys really didn't know what Ron Paul was about ... as half the stuff they bitch about is right in line with what he has to say. The other half of their positions he disagrees with, but he damn well supports their right to believe and work towards it. And it seems to me one of the major concerns for any liberal minded individual should be the loss of the Republican party to a small group of deceptive power brokering fanatics. I'd say they should kinda miss good old republicans with their small government anti-tax beliefs, honest sincere and just beliefs.
So, I called them. I managed to find the producers cell phone number on their website (to my shock) and I asked him to think about bringing on Ron Paul. Two days later ... they're talking about him, his positions, and stated that they are trying to get in contact with his people (emphasis on that they were trying and not really getting anywhere) to bring him on the show. I'm not sure how much my little phone call had to do with it but it sure felt good knowing that even my little contribution might have made a difference for once.
The area of discussion that they are after with Ron Paul is in proving the Republican establishment wrong. The part here that dissapoints me the most is that there is much more than the war in Iraq and policies surrounding it that is shared by the progressive dems and the libertarian republicans. I'm really hoping that they explore more about what we have in common together than what divides us, and how our ideas whether we call them conservative or we call them liberal may take different approaches but in the end, we all serve the same goal.
I'm going to email them and ask them to cover a variety of topics with Dr. No, if time permits. I'm going to challenge them to be fair, as much as they complain about FOX news I'd hope they'd be up for the challenge!
