Presidential hopeful says message is simple

By Lori Dougovito
GENESEE COUNTY (WJRT) -- (01/07/08)--If yard signs are any indication, Republican Ron Paul is getting more popular in Michigan. They're popping up all over, and so are groups of supporters.

Why the change? Paul says it's his message. It's simple. He cares about the constitution and balanced budgets.

Paul is one of just a handful of candidates who actually have campaign offices in Michigan, and he's the only one with an office in Genesee County.

We're just a little more than one week out from the primary.

"It shows the rest of the candidates see Genesee County as the has-been, that people don't care about this election and aren't going to vote," said supporter Cindy Gillie.

"Ron Paul knows the average person cares about this election and is going to get out and vote."

Paul's Flint office has been open since Dec. 27, and will be in business until at least two days after the primary next week.

You've probably seen more yard signs around Mid-Michigan, too, maybe people waving signs on the weekend. They're all volunteers conducting mostly grassroots efforts.

The Internet blitz continues, with YouTube postings, too.

As for the actual campaign offices, there's one in Detroit, too. It has been focusing attention on canvassing communities.

Whatever you've been seeing on the side of the road is all from the ground up, not an organized, campaign office effort. There's meeting groups that have been very successful.

You basically get online, get matched up with a local group and meet with people who share the same interest as you. In this case, it's Ron Paul for president.

The support was recognized by Paul's people, which led to the office in Genesee County.
